To be pissed off that Davina McCall and Sainsbury's think that 50% of "people" go through the Menopause

Standing in bloody long queue at Sainsburys this afternoon (as they only open 1 bloody till even when 6 people have trolleys full - I know that's another thread ...) so not in a great mood. Then over the speaker comes Davina with "Hi, I'm Davina and I want to talk about the Menopause." Ok, I think, being at that age, then "Did you know that 50% of PEOPLE go through the menopause?" WTF!!

How to make a menopausal WOMAN really angry.

AIBU to say that Sainsburys have lost my custom?

Isn't it just to ensure men are also aware of it as many men have mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, female partners etc and no doubt it also affects them if their wife/gf/partner is experiencing distressing symptoms that are menopause-related. I don't really get the hate tbh. I thought it was all about creating awareness of a common issue that many women will experience.

Er, perhaps so they understand it and can support and even help their wives, partners, sisters and colleagues who may be struggling with it. Like normal people.

If they're such lovely supportive people I'm sure they've already discussed it with the women who want to discuss it with them.

Ugh to the idea of male colleagues having any "engagement" with my menopause.

Exactly this!

Add in that not all women know about all the symptoms etc I can totally get why it's been put that way.

Milly2022 · 27/09/2022 19:42

I'm menopausal myself but don't find 50% of people a bad thing. They're trying to emphasise that half the population will eventually be subjected to the bastard menopause. So, I'm all for it.

50% of people is less offensive than saying “all women” go through the menopause because some women don’t for medical reasons or dying beforehand

But only women go through menopause, ever, in the history of the entire world.

And even if a woman undergoes a total hysterectomy with salpingo-oophorectomy, she will experience immediate menopausal symptoms and need HRT. So still menopause.

Are we meant to worry about every single possibility of potentially offending someone else before speaking? Might as well not speak at all then, eh?

Iliveonahill · 27/09/2022 20:15

It assumes that everyone understands what the word menopause means and that 50% means women and not short people, or prostate owners etc. It’s hiding the fact that it’s a female issue. 50% of people may get prostate cancer but that would never be said.

This.

Also, this ‘not all women go through it because some die first’ is a bollocks reason for not saying ‘all women’, because surely saying women implicitly means living women, it’s obvious.

Because menopause is practically certain but thankfully prostate cancer isn't. There's a large difference

Why have I posted, it's pointless on these threads they just all go the same way backwards and forwards, round and round

changingstages · 28/09/2022 04:16

Yeah you are being highly unreasonable.

Autumnisclose · 28/09/2022 04:29

Meh. I can't get worked up about this. I assume it's their way of making everyone listen to the ,message. I'm more bothered about the constant wittering on about the menopause. It's a normal biological process , move on Davina. I'm 49 , I don't need a running commentary and horror list of what's going on .

W0tnow · 28/09/2022 05:39

It’s stupid.

It’s like saying 50% of people get their period when going through puberty.

How could men NOT be aware of it?

and if that was the aim of the campaign, then it should be directed AT men. Like ‘Hey, blokes, the women in your lives might be going through menopause, you might want to back the fuck off and turn down the heating’ kind of thing.

jeaux90 · 28/09/2022 05:57

You are right OP. It should say women.

There is enough obscurity about this topic as it is without adding to it.

Also women whose first language isn't English might not understand.

It is purposely erasing women, they knew exactly what they were doing.

Don't let posters on here tell you your instinct is off, it definitely isn't.

Pop over to the feminist section, it's a very real concern.

Women are people yes, but the campaigns aimed at male people use the word Men very clearly!
