To be pissed off that Davina McCall and Sainsbury's think that 50% of "people" go through the Menopause

Standing in bloody long queue at Sainsburys this afternoon (as they only open 1 bloody till even when 6 people have trolleys full - I know that's another thread ...) so not in a great mood. Then over the speaker comes Davina with "Hi, I'm Davina and I want to talk about the Menopause." Ok, I think, being at that age, then "Did you know that 50% of PEOPLE go through the menopause?" WTF!!

How to make a menopausal WOMAN really angry.

AIBU to say that Sainsburys have lost my custom?

Well it's bollocks anyway, I bet 50% of people won't go through the menopause

I'm sure they made sure the word women wasn't in that speech anywhere for a reason

Judijudi · 26/09/2022 19:41

There will be people who are non binary or trans who will still have menopause but they won’t identify as women so ‘people’ is inclusive

BattenburgDonkey · 26/09/2022 19:41

LuciferRising · 26/09/2022 19:38

50%? Does that mean potentially my husband could go through it? It suggests that to me.

Really? Because she used the word people rather than women you think your husband could go through the menopause? Are you really worried that women may think this about their husbands based on her saying people once? Especially when she refers to women going through it all through her book and documentary. Daft.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/09/2022 19:41

ReeseWitherfork · 26/09/2022 19:04

I think she’s using that phrasing to highlight how many people go through it though. It’s not about erasing the word woman, it’s about highlighting exactly what portion of the population go through it. It would be daft to say “100% of women go through the menopause” because that’s bloody obvious.

Hits the 'Like' button (oh wait, there still bloody isn't one) for @ReeseWitherfork

LoobyDop · 26/09/2022 19:42

It makes me furious when I’m told “not only women experience the menopause”, because that is incorrect, deliberately misleading to suit an ideological agenda, etc. But 50% of people do go through the menopause. It just happens to be entirely and exclusively the 50% that is female.

Really? Oh, dear.

BiologicalKitty · 26/09/2022 19:43

Which 50% of people though? Eg, the older half, or younger? There are plenty of ways to parse the population that avoids or obfuscates the fact its only women, ever, who undergo the experience of menopause.

YANBU. It should say 51% of people go through the menopause. Since 51% of the UK population (at the 2011 census) was female...

ButterYourMuffin · 26/09/2022 18:59

But why not say that it is women that go through the menopause? Is women a dirty word?

You're missing the point.

Menopause is being discussed as a normal thing within the population and not labelled as a women's issue. There is a need to discuss menopause in the workplace and wider society. It's a topic that everyone should be familiar with, including men.

Besides, what would you rather they say?

  • 100% of women go through the menopause - not true and dismisses women who never go through the menopause for a variety of reasons (not least those that die beforehand).
  • 100% that go through the menopause are women - back to pigeon-holing/dismissing it as a 'female problem'.

So trans men don't exist and are just an, 'Ideological agenda'?

CandyLeBonBon · 26/09/2022 19:50

not true and dismisses women who never go through the menopause for a variety of reasons (not least those that die beforehand).

Afaik unless you had your ovaries removed prior to reaching puberty, you will go through the menopause. If you have a hysterectomy whilst young, you will experience menopause. If you die before you reach the age of menopause that's very sad, but a red herring. So it still stands that only women experience the menopause.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 26/09/2022 19:51

Not all transmen will go through it, I'd think plenty would be on hormones that stop any of the side effects

CandyLeBonBon · 26/09/2022 19:54

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie a transman still has female anatomy/biology and will experience menopause whether through natural means, or through a hysterectomy/cosmetic surgery and/or taking testosterone. They identify as a man and may present as such but their physiology is still female. No one is denying they exist.

I think the point is that transmen don’t refer to themselves as women. And fair enough, they don’t have to. (Which isn’t the same as saying TWAW btw, I’m not getting at that.)

keepcalm11 · 26/09/2022 19:56

They arent allowed to say this OP becuase its not inclusive 😂

clearopalite · 26/09/2022 19:56

It’s pointing out that half of the population go through it, not just a small percentage (yet it still isn’t taken seriously by many). I can’t see anything wrong with it.

You're confusing my first and second bullet points, disagreeing with the first one by saying the second one is true. They're both true, they don't conflict.

  • Not every woman goes through the menopause.
  • Everyone that goes through the menopause is a woman.

So we have to hide the fact that women go through it for people to take it seriously?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/09/2022 19:59

@CandyLeBonBon Yes,I know what trans men are. @LoobyDop 's comment denies their existence by misgendering them.

lljkk · 26/09/2022 19:59

I'd be irked to hear about Davina's opinions on anything, myself, don't care if she refers to me as a Spoonbill platypus, just don't assume I care about her opinions. Grrrrrr.

LuciferRising · 26/09/2022 19:58

It’s not exactly hiding it is it. It’s one use of the word ‘people’ about something that everybody knows affects women.

orbitalcrisis · 26/09/2022 19:59

Sometimes girls go through the menopause, so it's not just women.

CandyLeBonBon · 26/09/2022 19:59

You're right @ReeseWitherfork but the thing is, it doesn't change the fact that if you have female biology you are a member of the sex who will go through the menopause. Regardless of how you refer to yourself.

CandyLeBonBon · 26/09/2022 20:00

orbitalcrisis · 26/09/2022 19:59

Girls are still human females. Just not adult ones.
