To be pissed off that Davina McCall and Sainsbury's think that 50% of "people" go through the Menopause

Standing in bloody long queue at Sainsburys this afternoon (as they only open 1 bloody till even when 6 people have trolleys full - I know that's another thread ...) so not in a great mood. Then over the speaker comes Davina with "Hi, I'm Davina and I want to talk about the Menopause." Ok, I think, being at that age, then "Did you know that 50% of PEOPLE go through the menopause?" WTF!!

Do all women go through menopause? What about those who lose their ovaries?

How can you possibly be pissed off at that? It's true. Maybe it's phrased that way to hit home how massive it is. When people find every possible reason to be offended it dilutes reasonable offence.

Tbh I think this is the one time a neutral word is necessary, saying all women go through the menopause doesn't have the same impact. The fact half the world does, is a much more impactful way of saying it. Many don't give a shit about women.

Because most men switch off when they hear the word women. If they hear 50% of people then they use their brains to figure out if it means them. When they realise that it doesn't they focus on the 50% as a figure. Men like facts. Unless those facts involve mentioning women before the fact. Obvs innit 😂

Perhaps she was making the point that this affects half the human race so needs to be treated seriously, rather than overlooked as just a ‘woman thing’ and hence unimportant (as historically it has been).

TBH I’m more annoyed at the monetisation of menopause. The only reason sainsburys are talking about it is so they can sell stuff.

I don’t think the word “people “ instead of “women” is so bad in this context, however YANBU imo because I’m sick to fucking death of having my awareness raised about various things all the time. The last thing I want is Davina McCall teaching me about the menopause as I try to do my grocery shopping.

It’s stupid terminology. What’s wrong with saying “half the population (If indeed it is that - in some countries it’s not quite 50% and in others, it’s more) goes through the menopause”?

Currently it is ambiguous and opaque. My initial thoughts were that it sounds like 50% goes through the menopause at the same time
