To be pissed off that Davina McCall and Sainsbury's think that 50% of "people" go through the Menopause

Standing in bloody long queue at Sainsburys this afternoon (as they only open 1 bloody till even when 6 people have trolleys full - I know that's another thread ...) so not in a great mood. Then over the speaker comes Davina with "Hi, I'm Davina and I want to talk about the Menopause." Ok, I think, being at that age, then "Did you know that 50% of PEOPLE go through the menopause?" WTF!!

How to make a menopausal WOMAN really angry.

AIBU to say that Sainsburys have lost my custom?

Companies need to stop erasing the word women. Ridiculous.

@CandyLeBonBon Yes,I know what trans men are. @LoobyDop 's comment denies their existence by misgendering them.

Not everyone believes in this gender stuff. HTH

TroysMammy · 26/09/2022 20:02

I heard this in Sainsbury's last Saturday. I felt like shouting out women, it's women who go through the menopause.

A percentage may be affected but only as a result of women going through the menopause.

CandyLeBonBon · 26/09/2022 20:02

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie - loopy didn't misgender anyone. She correctly noted that only females will experience the menopause. That's not misgendering, that's a recognition of a widely observed biological fact.

Cuck00soup · 26/09/2022 20:02

TBH I recently attended a menopause seminar for work and was irritated beyond words by the long and convoluted descriptions highly qualified female Drs came up with to describe female people.

Only for the lone male speaker to simply call us women.

We really do make this harder for ourselves by "being nice".

DogInATent · 26/09/2022 19:45

You're missing the point.

Menopause is being discussed as a normal thing within the population and not labelled as a women's issue. There is a need to discuss menopause in the workplace and wider society. It's a topic that everyone should be familiar with, including men.

Besides, what would you rather they say?

  • 100% of women go through the menopause - not true and dismisses women who never go through the menopause for a variety of reasons (not least those that die beforehand).
  • 100% that go through the menopause are women - back to pigeon-holing/dismissing it as a 'female problem'.

Exactly this. It's about educating the population. Supporting women in feeling more free and open to ask for help, supporting men in understanding and acting with care.

But sure, let's make it a trans "eradicating women" thing again. Ridiculous.

Theluggage15 · 26/09/2022 20:04

There should always be clear language around medical matters so as not to exclude people such as those who have English as a second language. Just say women ffs.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/09/2022 20:04

@Pixiedust1234 Believe it or not, 'This gender stuff' is a reality for many people and protected in law - and you wishing it were not so, does not make it not so. HTH.

This thread has a point?

Not every woman goes through the menopause

Of cousre every woman goes throught the menopause , how can they avoid it ?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/09/2022 20:06

@CandyLeBonBon And I am 'correctly noting' that trans man may have been born female but do not consider themselves as female, and the law protects them in this.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 26/09/2022 20:06

I'm just pissed off that everyone (in the media) keeps bollocking on about the menopause.
Trudging round the supermarket and I get reminded about the fucking menopause!
Just shut up!!!

I literally don't care! I don't want to talk about it and I don't want to share with anyone about it.

Grrr...

Theluggage15 · 26/09/2022 20:07

Why the fuck does not using the word women mean it will be more widely discussed and is more supportive?

GinIronic · 26/09/2022 20:07

I was completely unaware of this thing called "menopause". I am so grateful to Davina McCall for bringing it to my attention. Without her expert knowledge and experience I would have struggled.

Well the law protects the characteristic of gender reassignment, yes, but the fact remains that from a health perspective even those who don't consider themselves to be women, but were born with female physiology, have to keep their biology in mind, much as they might not like to, because biology is not bothered about what pronouns people use. Healthcare relies on accurate information and that means understanding that the sex you were born as, is as important as your gender identity.

But they remain entitled to not be called female, even so.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 26/09/2022 20:13

Disgusting. And just another way to erase WOMEN/WOMAN/FEMALES. Angry

Sick to death of it I am.

Oh did you know 50% of people have penises???

See how stupid THAT sounds?!

CandyLeBonBon · 26/09/2022 20:14

Sorry Remus - if you made a comment at then end of that quote, it was cut off.

There's death. That's an effective way to prevent the menopause experience.

Davina is so well qualified and expert at ... appearing on TV.

Only on MN would people object to women being described as "people".

FourEyesGood · 26/09/2022 18:57

It’s factually correct, because women make up 50% of people! Stop looking for reasons to be offended.

I completely agree!

CandyLeBonBon · 26/09/2022 20:14

Thanks, Candy.

I was just saying that they're still entitled to not be called 'female' even whilst needing to acknowledge having a 'female birth body' will impact on health decisions etc.

This ^^

Makes me laugh when people get offended by non issues like this then call others snowflakes 🤣🤣

Liz1tummypain · 26/09/2022 20:19

I think it's a good way of putting it. Every other human goes through it. I'd like that wording too. It's a ( small) nod to equality and a point worth making.

CandyLeBonBon · 26/09/2022 20:19

Ahhh yes, @lljkk, death... that well known and 100% effective defence against menopause!

I'm slightly stunned that people are using death as some kind of 'gotcha' when discussing who will or won't go through the menopause! How bizarre!

Death prevents a lot of things. As an argument it's pretty rubbish!

properdoughnut · 26/09/2022 20:22

ButterYourMuffin · 26/09/2022 18:59

But why not say that it is women that go through the menopause? Is women a dirty word?

What? No it's to highlight that that's a large chunk of the population, half, so maybe we need to be more open about it.
