For wanting to do a Ouija board for a laugh?

Next year DH and I are staying in a castle thought to be the most haunted in Britain. DH says he doesn’t believe in stuff like that, I’m on the fence really but more towards not believing. I think the most likely scenario if ghosts ARE real is that they’re historical residue and not intelligent entities. But even that is a stretch.

So, I’d like to do a ouija board when we’re there for a laugh. The castle is in the middle of nowhere so there isn’t much else to do on an evening other than drink (which I don’t do) and watch Netflix!

DH is point blank refusing saying he isn’t messing about with stuff like that. But he’s a non believer??! So what’s the harm?

If he doesn’t believe in it, am I being unreasonable to ask him to do it?

So many people scoff, it makes them feel superior I suppose. Interesting though, that few scoffers have any rational arguments against the possibility of things beyond the normal senses. They just rely on sneering and emojis.

I don’t have any particular feelings about Ouija, or table tapping, or seances (though I would regard with suspicion any monetisation). I do think that the refusal to entertain the possibility of things beyond our immediate senses, or our tiny rationality, may not be the best defence against the untoward.

I'm happy to entertain the idea of things beyond our immediate senses.

But a parlour game and anecdotes is not proof of anything.

I would NEVER do a ouji board! Also I won't say candyman 5 times in the mirror... nor will I say Bloody Mary etc!

Man I want a bloody mary now, I only have to read it once...

Ouija boards are bollocks - this is how they 'work'

That’s just what the devil wants you to think!

@clairethewitch70 sorry you seem to be getting a pasting. I would describe myself as fairly sceptical, but have had enough experiences of this sort of thing to know it isn't a joke.

Such as ..?

Prescottdanni123 · 24/09/2022 09:23

@00100001

No, not the wood itself obviously.

IncompleteSenten · 24/09/2022 09:23

YABU.

The boards are a pile of wank. That's not the issue. The dead don't play board games. People make shit up, wind themselves and each other up, delude themselves and/or lie their arses off about it.

The issue is he doesn't want to. Doesn't matter why. Don't force someone to do something they don't want to. It's not fun for them and is it really fun for you knowing they are hating every minute of it and only doing it because you guilted/demanded/sulked them into it?

@00100001

No, not the wood itself obviously.

So what did removing a piece of furniture have to do with anything...

The spirit wasn't encased in the wood... surely?

Cantbebotheredwithchores · 24/09/2022 09:25

I'm not superstitious normally! But I would never do a ouija board at Chillingham Castle. I went there through the day and some parts gave me the creeps!

BloodyHellKen · 24/09/2022 09:25

Charged by an angry badger

Jesus, I've heard it all now 😂 How on earth did a nocturnal and very shy creature get so angry with you OP? I'd love to know.

Thejoyfulstar · 24/09/2022 09:26

I'm a Christian and believe these things are demonic and invite unwanted spiritual presences into your life. Bring on the emojis! 😉

However, spirituality aside, nobody should be forced to do anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. A documentary about a famous Vatican exorcist recently came up on on one of our streaming apps. I thought it looked interesting but my atheist husband said he thought it was too creepy to watch. Even though he doesn't believe, I still respected his wishes.

Seriously, most people fall into the camps when it comes to Ouija boards: it's not real, or it's evil.
If its not real, what's the point? If its evil, why do it? Nobody has ever said they did the Ouija board and it was great, it made a big positive difference to their lives and they are just so glad they did it. Just cut your losses on this one and do some sightseeing instead.

RiderOfTheBlue · 24/09/2022 09:26

Ouija boards are either nonsense or they're not. If they're not nonsense, you shouldn't mess with them. If they are nonsense, why waste your time? Either way, there's nothing to be gained.

Don’t
just please don’t
lots of people don’t believe in spirits, I am a sane person who currently works in the courts .. being sane is a requirement

i had get the priest to my house last year
the things that were happening in my house were the kind of things you only see in a ghost movie
on one occasion my clothes airer threw itself through the air on its own
sinister growls , woke up to furniture ripped overnight , teeth marks on me and DD
The headquarters of the spiritualist church is directly opposite my front door not sure if that was the cause .. but if you manifest something nasty it will follow you home

Badgers can be twats. Maybe she looked at it funny or spilled its pint.

Banana2079 · 24/09/2022 09:28

and that’s not even everything …too frightening to write down

Prescottdanni123 · 24/09/2022 09:30

I don't know exactly how it all works. All I know is my friend, who is usually the dictionary definition of sensible and down to earth got so upset over a bad feeling that she contacted someone to come and cleanse the house. This person, despite never being the house before automically knew that there was something wrong with the chest of drawers. And on one of these drawers was a ouija board. Once the ouija board, that friend knew nothing about beforehand, was gotten rid off, the feelings stopped. If she had known about the board before hand I would think that it was her own paranoia, but she didn't. I've heard plenty of other stories about ouija boards leading to a string of unpleasantness too.

I came on here to warn OP against using one, despite knowing that I would take a load of grief for it. That is my job done now.

I would certainly not experiment. People have done this sort of thing and have had extremely disturbing experiences. We can argue whether they are psychological or spiritual but I know one thing - they are undesirable!

It's because it's been tested scientifically countless times and consistently found to be untrue.

I mean, the top scientists in the world openly admit there’s far more that we don’t know than what we do.

There are many many things that scientists can’t figure out.

Even something simple as a bumble bee flying, when ‘scientifically’ they shouldn’t be able to.

😂 I don’t know, we must have pissed it off somehow!

No in reality I think it just panicked, we were walking through the woods just as it was getting dark and it came running out of the trees, ran past DH towards me then turned around and shot off in the opposite direction. It seemed like it was charging at us at the time! 😂

ReneBumsWombats · 24/09/2022 09:32

It's a parlour game that works by ideomotor movement, as any fule kno. Still, if someone is scared of it, why would you try to force them into it?

If you want to show him it's bollocks, dig up the video of Penn and Teller blindfolding the players then turning the board upside down. It still might not convince him, some people really want to believe it, but don't force stuff on him that he doesn't want to do. Since it works by ideomotor movement, if he's scared and believes it, he'll probably make it spell out all sorts of shite and traumatise himself.
