For wanting to do a Ouija board for a laugh?

Next year DH and I are staying in a castle thought to be the most haunted in Britain. DH says he doesn’t believe in stuff like that, I’m on the fence really but more towards not believing. I think the most likely scenario if ghosts ARE real is that they’re historical residue and not intelligent entities. But even that is a stretch.

So, I’d like to do a ouija board when we’re there for a laugh. The castle is in the middle of nowhere so there isn’t much else to do on an evening other than drink (which I don’t do) and watch Netflix!

DH is point blank refusing saying he isn’t messing about with stuff like that. But he’s a non believer??! So what’s the harm?

If he doesn’t believe in it, am I being unreasonable to ask him to do it?

Anyone who genuinely believes you can contact the dead.
Come round to my house.
With your board.
Contact my dad.
Ask him what my favourite game was as a kid.
If you are 'given' the right answer I'll give you a million quid.

I don’t give a flying rats arse if you think it’s unsubstantiated because you don’t know me and I don’t know you and we are talking on an Internet forum
it happened to me and it happened to my daughter . Just because it did not happen to you does not mean it did not exist and it does not make you superior either. Small minded people like you will do their best to make others feel small for their experiences just because you haven’t seen it for yourself..or have evidence of it.
There are plenty of experiences people have had and evidence for it which cannot be explained if you bothered to take a look ..but I guess you’re so stuck in your ways you wouldn’t even try. Do you honestly think I wanted something like this to happen to me and my daughter? I would rather it didn’t and I would rather be a sceptical as you unfortunately that’s not the case anymore.
Do you question scientists about The Big Bang Theory even though it’s a theory and no recorded evidence it happened? ( It’s a fact that it is still a theory) I have no time for people like you

Unless you're 13 years old, the Ouija board boring as hell because as soon as you realise the other person is pushing it.

Does the name of the castle start with a "C"? If so, I did an overnight vigil there a few years back. It was completely fake and the hosts were ridiculous. They made me sit in a dark room on my own and then come back to the group and report... I reported that it was very peaceful and I almost fell asleep. I did get angry after one of them make a young woman cry saying her dead grandmother was standing behind her. The castle was much more interesting during the daytime when I could read the owner's eccentric comments on all the exhibits.

Chillingham, yes 😂

Was the dark room the supposed dungeon? I found it really peaceful in there too. I do think it’s a strange place for a dungeon though, don’t you? As it’s next to what was originally the kitchen area I’m guessing it was actually a type of larder

Some people put faaar too much faith in science. Science is amazing but how can you be so closed minded that you think 'that's it, they've figured out everything the universe has to offer now!' 😆

As well as the photos from the last two times we went?

And I'm willing to bet these same people don't have anything to say to devout Christians who use their belief in 'God' to help them through grief or whatever. Because believing in God is somehow acceptable.

QueSyrahSyrah · 24/09/2022 11:04

@Banana2079 Just wanted to say that while my previous posts on the thread have been neutral, I have also experienced stuff over a sustained period of time earlier in my life that I can't find answers to. I also wish they hadn't happened, and I'd much rather be riding around on a sceptical high horse. I believe you x

(To add for context of the thread my experiences had fuck all to do with Ouji boards or my views on them)

Eh? Have you ever read a MN thread on the topic? There are plenty of us who think that it's all utter nonsense and are very willing to say so. Believing in God makes as much sense as all things woo i.e none.

And I don’t give a flying rat's arse if you think it’s substantiated because you don’t know me and I don’t know you and we are talking on an Internet forum. See how this works? You must be mad if you think that's reliable evidence of the impossible happening.

The Big Bang theory is indeed only a theory, as scientists will happily tell you. But there is plenty of clear, tangible evidence to support it as a theory. And scientists don't get shitty when you ask them for it. They are thrilled to provide it. They would be even more thrilled if someone discovered new evidence to suggest a different theory. Because despite your narrow-minded belief that being credulous equals being broad-minded, scientifically-minded people want to encounter new stuff that advances knowledge.

Why didn't you contact scientists when this supposedly happened? Do you not want to prove it happened and open their closed minds?

It's a fact that belief in god is considered fairly normal while belief in other supernatural entities is not. That's true of humans in general and therefore, probably an internet forum.

'that's it, they've figured out everything the universe has to offer now!'

You don't know the first thing about how science works. Literally, not the first thing.

What do you think research scientists do all day? Sit in labs all day drinking coffee and playing Wordle because they think they've figured out everything the universe has to offer?

What exactly do you think the job is?

EbbyEbs · 24/09/2022 11:10

How does every thread on here end up with people arguing? 😂😂

So - from the replies I have decided I am being unreasonable. Thanks!

Just want to add though the subject of doing a Ouija board has always been a fun type of banter between DH and me. He doesn’t want to, I playfully beg him to. He refuses again and suggests I ask my grandma to do it with me instead - it’s just a laugh. He often asks me to do stuff I don’t want to do also.

it’s not a case of me threatening him with divorce if he doesn’t comply like some of the replies are implying 😂😂

I personally think, ouija boards aside, that not everyone is capable of having a supernatural experience. There is a lot of unexplained in the world and what people couldn't wrap their heads around aeons ago is well understood now. I'm sure that will be the case for all of time.

Well no, unlike you, I'm not claiming to be an expert. You actually think every mystery has been solved? Poor you!

Did someone really compare the Big Bang Theory to a supposed flying clothes horse? Fuck me.

Also a scientific theory is not the same thing as a theory in the sense that most people use. www.amnh.org/exhibitions/darwin/evolution-today/what-is-a-theory

My last few posts have literally been about how research science is all about exploration and discovery of the unknown. And how scientists would cream themselves if someone could prove what you're saying because of the huge advance in human understanding that it would prompt.

I'm not surprised that a person who mistakes credulity for robust thought can't grasp that, though.

Ouija is a Hasbro trademark. It's literally a toy.

Yy. And the name ouija is not some woo esoteric word, but the French and German words for 'yes' melded together.

What am I saying? Because I haven't given a definitive opinion one way or the other. Because I don't know and neither do you.

FindingMeno · 24/09/2022 11:20

If someone expected me to do a ouija board and mocked or disregarded my view I would be furious.
If you were going to do a ouija board somewhere I was expected to stay, even without me present I wouldn't go.
Yabu.

Regardless of if you "believe" in them or not, your husband doesn't want to do it, so respect that and take a monopoly board or another game he would enjoy doing.
