For wanting to do a Ouija board for a laugh?

EbbyEbs · 24/09/2022 08:25

Next year DH and I are staying in a castle thought to be the most haunted in Britain. DH says he doesn’t believe in stuff like that, I’m on the fence really but more towards not believing. I think the most likely scenario if ghosts ARE real is that they’re historical residue and not intelligent entities. But even that is a stretch.

So, I’d like to do a ouija board when we’re there for a laugh. The castle is in the middle of nowhere so there isn’t much else to do on an evening other than drink (which I don’t do) and watch Netflix!

DH is point blank refusing saying he isn’t messing about with stuff like that. But he’s a non believer??! So what’s the harm?

If he doesn’t believe in it, am I being unreasonable to ask him to do it?

You think he should do something he's uncomfortable with to prove something to you ?
Isn't there a word for that ?

Queensize · 24/09/2022 08:56

Gosh people are unimaginative. Read, play board games, knit, have a nice bath. It's not Netflix or drink!

I know a few people who played with ouija boards and they all experienced some really weird, disturbing stuff going on in their house afterwards.

A friend of mine moved into a new house and kept on feeling a really sickening sense of evil coming from the guest bedroom. The person who came to cleanse the house went into that room and said that there was something wrong with the chest of drawers (was there when friend moved in). They pulled it apart and found a ouija board drawn on the bottom of one of the drawers. Friend and the person who came to cleanse the house had no idea it was there beforehand. Once she destroyed the chest of drawers, the feeling of evil left.

Right. So a piece of wood was haunting the house...

Please don’t do it. I have had to pick up the pieces and do pastoral care and house cleansings for people who dabble with stuff they can’t handle.

Translation: I've had to mop up vomit, tidy up after and nurse my hungover teenagers and their friends after they got rascally drunk, played silly games, and trashed the place.

@00100001

How else would you explain it, other than the ouija board bringing something unpleasant in?

Just going to add that my friend is usually the most down to earth, practical person. She is not normally one to panic over strange feelings apart from this occasion because it was so strong. And the person she brought in to cleanse the house had no idea there was a ouija board on the chest of drawers, just that there seemed to be something really off about it.

Leave your own historical residue in the hotel room

Bitbloweyoutthere · 24/09/2022 09:13

I did ouija boards with my friends, when we were teens.

Nothing happened.

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 24/09/2022 09:13

@clairethewitch70 sorry you seem to be getting a pasting. I would describe myself as fairly sceptical, but have had enough experiences of this sort of thing to know it isn't a joke.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 24/09/2022 09:14

So many people scoff, it makes them feel superior I suppose. Interesting though, that few scoffers have any rational arguments against the possibility of things beyond the normal senses. They just rely on sneering and emojis.

I don’t have any particular feelings about Ouija, or table tapping, or seances (though I would regard with suspicion any monetisation). I do think that the refusal to entertain the possibility of things beyond our immediate senses, or our tiny rationality, may not be the best defence against the untoward.

(Possible Trigger warning)

It's a very strange thing.
My usually very down to Earth mum said once , 'never mess with a ouija
Board '
She wouldn't explain why but it was just the way she said it....

Some years later I heard a story about 5 young people who had used one.
One went mad, one committed suicide- can't remember what happened to the others.

Never been brave enough to try myself -

thedancingbear · 24/09/2022 09:16

I think it should be fine as long as the OP’s parents are in the next room?

PicturesOfDogs · 24/09/2022 09:16

No, don’t do it, don’t mess about with these things

inheritanceshiteagain · 24/09/2022 08:43

If he is uncomfortable with it then you don't do it. You have to respect his views. For you it's 'a bit of fun' for him it causes a genuine mental discomfort. Despite non belief, humans are naturally superstitious.

This. I'm a cynic and atheist but others may have underlying spiritual beliefs that may be upset by this sort of thing.

Exactly why “go away” and then do the same thing you would be doing at home?

GasPanic · 24/09/2022 09:19

OP, it's perfectly reasonable to want to engage with the living dead after being charged by an angry badger.

Tell DH to leave the top trumps and knitting at home on this one.

She had a sense of bad stuff, got a person in to "cleanse" the house, and had a nice little placebo if 'oh yes, it's definitely this piece of wood' and removed it

Does she GENUINELY believe a piece of wood was evil???

Perfect28 · 24/09/2022 09:19

It's because it's been tested scientifically countless times and consistently found to be untrue.

dudsville · 24/09/2022 09:19

So we just had a long chat about this. Neither one of us is woo inclined. OH said he wouldn't as it would just be unsettling, so similar to your OH, doesn't believe in it but can see how it wouldn't be fun, and then you've missed out on just enjoying a nice experience. For me i just wouldn't find it an engaging enough pastime. Rather have a nice break and read a book!

but the onus is on you to demonstrate that these things ‘beyond the normal senses’ exist?

if you can provide me with objective evidence that you can summon up my nana, or Beelzebub, using a bit of cardboard and a bottle top, I am all ears. Seriously.

Yes letters printed on wood or plastic are definitely not things to mess about with.

Look at all the haunted Scrabble sets I. The world.

HailAdrian · 24/09/2022 09:21

I'm fascinated by stuff like this but also super sceptical, which is weird. Anyway, all the teen magazines I used to read told me NEVER to play with Ouija boards.
