Tradesperson inviting people into my home

1000 replies

IvyPlant · 17/09/2022 17:03

Currently got a tradesperson in to do a job. They quoted me a day rate of 8 days work (which I think will take less time than that, but they're the expert...)

Anyway, that's not my AIBU. I checked my security footage this week and noticed a woman popped round to my house when I was out and tradesperson was working alone in my house. I can only see her walk past my front door to the back garden gate, she knocks and then the feed ends. She's seen leaving 4 hours later. The next day, same thing, except 3 hours.

At present the tradesperson gets here for about 8am and has already stopped working by 3pm. So that's 7 hours of work, fair enough, but 4 (and 3) of them an unknown woman here is (it's not his wife, I did a little social media digging and it's not her).

AIBU if I question him about it next week? He still has 4 days left to finish the job next week and I don't l like the fact there's an unknown and univited person in my house when I'm not there, plus, how much work can he really be doing if his "mate" is there for 4 hours.

Place marking for Tuesday 😮

sammylady37 · 18/09/2022 06:02

The only redeeming feature here is that he had his own blanket so isn’t directly having sex on your bed.

MerryMarigold · 18/09/2022 06:12

I would definitely leave reviews for him, that hopefully his wife sees, regarding a tall blonde 'visitor' staying for several hours. I would also deduct the number of hours she's there from his day rate.

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/09/2022 06:32

I know you’ve bought the camera. But are you able to stay at home but text him you’re out already, back at 5pm or some such? You just need provisions for the day….

Bournetilly · 18/09/2022 06:38

Can’t wait for the update on Tuesday.
Definitely watch the camera footage before confronting him, he would probably just lie anyway.
I’d be wanting a refund for the hours he spent with her, I’d be tempted to send the footage to his wife as well (obviously depending what it shows).

IvyPlant · 18/09/2022 06:48

Omg guys! My most popular thread on MN and all it took was an electrician and his fluffy blanket.

I couldn't sleep last night and went through the video footage again a little more closely. On one of the days the woman arrives, her hair is in a bun. When she is caught on the camera leaving hours later, her hair is mysteriously in a ponytail.

She also walks right up close to the next door neighbour's property, trying to purposely avoid the camera and potentially look as though she didn't come from my bank garden. She's looking straight ahead in the hopes the camera won't get her face (as the is looking out on a side view). Plus she completely ignores the electrician standing in front of the camera (in his attempt to block the view of her leaving but fails as it's a wide lens). When she makes it to the main road, he stops faffing in front of the camera and walks up after her. It's at this point the camera picks up a little dialogue between the pair, it's pretty muffled but I can hear her telling him she doesn't want to get a ticket. She arrived by car (I can see her car key in her hand when she's walking) which I think is parked on private land across the road.

Plus, to answer some questions: no I haven't paid yet. It's on completion of the job.

He's quoted me for 8 days work and is charging on a day rate.

Yes I did spend £100 English pounds on recording equipment and I'd damn well do it again.

No I won't be blackmailing him, it's a criminal offence.

If I find out she's been here again or see he has been doing less work than claiming for, I'll be discussing it with him directly upon completion of job and when he issues his invoice.

You had me already, but the blanket & pillows pic? I am now hooked! Would it be anyway possible to send a similar pic of the woman? 😬
Jeez though, he must have a cold plated cock or a wad of cashfor her to stay that long under those conditionsConfused

Justleaveitblankthen · 18/09/2022 06:52

Gold plated (though it's getting chillier now so..)

hashbrownsandwich · 18/09/2022 06:55

Is his name Paul?

Poppins2016 · 18/09/2022 07:00

This sounds sensible. As it stands, he's potentially not worked for a whole day, which you could ask to be deducted from the invoice.

So to answer some questions, yes, my son is a baby.

He has access to my house as he is doing the electrics and there are 5 consumer units in and outside the house and needs to replace them all. He started off doing work in the garden outbuildings first and is replacing the ones in the house next week.

The reason why I want to wait until Tuesday is because that's when he's next due back in (he finished up on Thursday) and he has my front door key. So my thoughts are to get the key off him Tuesday morning when he comes back to start up work again and confront him then. The job isn't finished yet.

Changing my consumer unit took no more than 2 hours, he is taken advantage of you in all fronts. Forget about getting the key back, change the locks!

whingewhinge · 18/09/2022 07:10

Can I be a spoilsport? I would take those photos down. If I knew him I would absolutely recognise him and what a horrible way for a woman to find out her husband is a cheating pig (along with knowing all of mumsnet and likely the mums at school gate now also know)

I would get him to finish the job and then ask him to requote considering he clearly hasn't been doing 8 days work

IvyPlant · 18/09/2022 07:13

So there's 5 consumer units, (1 is being completely removed) and also the cables between the buildings needed replacing to bring up to regulations. Plus then each new consumer unit needs testing and then all sockets to the consumer unit need testing also. He quoted 1 full day to change each unit and then 1 full day to test, plus overestimating on time in case of any problems. At the time of the initial quote, I did question this (8 days seemed excessive, I was expecting more like 4) but he said he'd rather overestimate in case of any problems and then complete earlier and make the customer happy.

At the time I just didn't realise the unforeseen problems meant entertaining a lady friend.

Shamelessly placemarking and am impressed by your sleuthing skills Op!

I'm surprised you think you would recognise someone else's husband based on seeing their forearms, which have no discernible features. Have you considered working for the police?

Thanks for being the voice of reason though!

I think they are potentially identifying, too, if I was looking at my own husband.

BadNomad · 18/09/2022 07:29

Yes make sure to deduct 3 minutes per visit from the bill.
