Tradesperson inviting people into my home

1000 replies

IvyPlant · 17/09/2022 17:03

Currently got a tradesperson in to do a job. They quoted me a day rate of 8 days work (which I think will take less time than that, but they're the expert...)

Anyway, that's not my AIBU. I checked my security footage this week and noticed a woman popped round to my house when I was out and tradesperson was working alone in my house. I can only see her walk past my front door to the back garden gate, she knocks and then the feed ends. She's seen leaving 4 hours later. The next day, same thing, except 3 hours.

At present the tradesperson gets here for about 8am and has already stopped working by 3pm. So that's 7 hours of work, fair enough, but 4 (and 3) of them an unknown woman here is (it's not his wife, I did a little social media digging and it's not her).

AIBU if I question him about it next week? He still has 4 days left to finish the job next week and I don't l like the fact there's an unknown and univited person in my house when I'm not there, plus, how much work can he really be doing if his "mate" is there for 4 hours.

any update?! have you sacked him yet haha

CrunchyKnot · 21/09/2022 20:13

No, I would have told him the moment I found out and would not be expect to be billed for the days he had company. I would assume he wouldn’t have the nerve to!

bringbackveronicamars · 21/09/2022 20:42

I'm with you, OP, in that I'd have him finish the job at this stage and then confront him with the knowledge that he's inflated his working hours to cover socialiazing in your home with your food at your expense.

justoneday · 21/09/2022 21:01

Not read all the comments as it seems I’m late to the party. But OP I’ve read each and every one of your posts. I completely agree with you about getting him to finish the job and challenge him afterwards. Tradesmen have so much work on at the moment that he could drop you and leave you in the lurch. I really can’t wait until next Monday to find out what he says. (Shagging without a doubt).

Dave20 · 21/09/2022 21:16

I haven’t read all 39 pages of this thread.
I understand you’re reasons for letting him finish the job first before confronting him.

But are you happy with this woman potentially coming over between now and then? Potentially having liaisons in your home, bedroom?

Dave20 · 21/09/2022 21:26

You could confront him on Tuesday and await his reply? Showing him the evidence, his face will be a picture!
Or alternatively sack him now and present him the reasons for doing so. I can’t see him sending you a bill, he wouldn’t have the nerve surely?

On a serious note he’s broken your trust, and brought someone unauthorised into your home.

Is the Tuesday yesterday?? No update, I'm waiting with glee. How many hours is OP going to pay him? Half? 32 hours? That seems fair

Twawmyarse · 21/09/2022 21:34

Placemarking as want to know what happens 👀!

She can hire a DeLorean and go back to Tuesday to confront him?

Fucks sake.

People coming here to "placemark". Your comments are going to fill up the thread before OP gets to update us over the coming days. You all know you can just click "watch thread" right!? 🙄

StayWeird1 · 21/09/2022 21:54

Can not wait for an update on this!

HintofVintagePink · 21/09/2022 21:56

It’s OP’s son’s birthday today so she isn’t updating

haveyourcakeandeatit · 21/09/2022 22:05

Is his name Murray by any chance?

Sorry I have to know how this ends. I think what the OP is doing is logical and now she is forwarned as to how he may react when he learns about the inside cameras. Morally I don't think there is anything wrong with them given his clear breach of trust. I don't know if legally it's ok to film without consent in these circumstances. I would probably risk it in her shoes.

IvyPlant · 22/09/2022 07:42

Morning all. Thanks for all the well wishes yesterday. A good birthday was had, although it was very rushed as I still had to work. We're going to celebrate properly at the weekend.

Yesterday was incident free in the IvyPlant household, although he did clog my handheld Shark vacuum cleaner with builders dust. I suppose I should be thankful he attempted to clean though.

He's in the final stages of the job now. He mentioned doing the testing and then certifying of the new equipment. Maybe 1-2 days more, which would take him to 8 days.

I don't know if he will hand me an invoice or email it to me. Last time he emailed me, but I will discuss final amount with him on the last day and then I can talk about days charged and the camera footage.

Sorry if anyone has asked questions I haven't answered. If you wanted to ask again, I will answer.

For those I can remember: I found him through a trade website. And no, his name is not Murray.

At least he's nearly finished Op. Hang in there, it's almost complete! Definitely knock at least 3-4 days off the job if he tries to charge for 8 days. Charging for 5 days would be fair enough (from the sounds of things!).

So sorry you're having to experience this! We're having work done currently and all the guys have been so respectful and decent, and I'm still not comfortable with them having keys and coming and going to get the work done, so would absolutely feel violated in your position.

NuckingFightmare · 22/09/2022 09:00

@IvyPlant could you please start a new thread? This one's almost full and I simply can't miss the conclusion! Thanks Flowers

Checkatrade @IvyPlant

glad your son had a nice breakfast. So ideally should be finished tomorrow as day 8?
