AIBU?
Period of mourning has sent some people batshit?
LimpBiskit · 13/09/2022 17:45
I've noticed a ramping up of crazy on here over the last few days with some odd threads. Also more fratchy interactions on more balanced ones. AIBU that the queen's death has destabilised things a bit?
Am I being unreasonable?

Definitely on the royal threads, at least. No criticism on the RF is allowed without masses of posters trying to shut the threads down with anger and aggression.
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 13/09/2022 18:26
I've noticed it. I was just thinking it's a bit like the early days of lockdown in terms of atmosphere on here.
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 13/09/2022 18:28
I wonder if a lot of people are stressed now that the weather's getting noticeably colder - plus obviously food prices going crazy.
stillherenow · 13/09/2022 18:31
I notice it on telly. I can't watch any tv news now but radio is a bit better. Utterly bonkers people queuing to get a look at a coffin - 30 hours !!! And all the plastic wrapped flowers! It's just mindless hysteria now. I was interested the first 2 days as a moment of history but everything has gone completely nuts

Yes, a definite strain of royal demise-inspired lunacy has emerged, but seems also to be in some vague way related to end of empire and to Brexit — sort of ‘Yes, we may no longer have an empire, have voted to make our country increasingly irrelevant and isolated off the back of an internal Tory squabble, and be governed by the venal, unqualified and incompetent, but by God, we do royal death ceremonial well!’
Pixiedust1234 · 13/09/2022 18:33
its like brexit all over again. Its extreme and nasty.

Yep.
We've had the pandemic, there's the war, there's the price rises, the holiday fiascos, and now the queen's died.
We have had quite a lot on our plates one way or another.
I'd be the first to say that i'm very lucky in that none of the above has affected me in a tangible way, but the stress does add up.

It does feel like people over 70 grabbing the initiative for the last time.
Notjusta · 13/09/2022 18:35
100% yes - both royalists and republicans. The level of venom and hatred being spouted is way above even normal MN standards.
BiscuitLover3678 · 13/09/2022 18:36
It does seem a little bit nuts if I’m honest. I’m sad she’s gone and respect her and the fact it’s a moment in history, but I think some people are going ott. I wonder if everyone needs a distraction from current life and/of this was the final straw after so much negativity in the news atm.
Mumofsend · 13/09/2022 18:37
Judging by mumsnet center parks and Facebook, the Queen has tipped the entire country over
BiscuitLover3678 · 13/09/2022 18:37
I also genuinely don’t think she would have wanted hospitals to close and appointments to be scrapped, but there you go…
Bretonbear · 13/09/2022 18:38
The woman singing the hymn in the queue to see the coffin on GMTV did it for me. Utter lunacy at its finest.
icelolly12 · 13/09/2022 18:38
Pretty sure it's the same people who declare China/Russia/Middle East as repressive, thought suppressing dictatorships that simultaneously aggressively silence anyone who doesn't declare their undying adoration for the Royals ... the irony!
MarshaBradyo · 13/09/2022 18:39
I thought that with all the other big events but yeh this is ramping up another notch, which seemed difficult but there you go

Oh dear, as opposed to just fading away and dying?
x2boys · 13/09/2022 18:40
I'm fed.up with it all tbh ,im not a Royslist ,but i appreciate many people are upset
but it's everywhere.
Firkinhavinalaugh · 13/09/2022 18:41
its the unsettling effect of “change” , whilst the end of an era might seem trite, it’s a change and one that has come about via a sad event.
Its a period of grief, not deep grief of losing someone close but the grief of a period of time lost when things seemed better. It’s the rose tinted glasses effect.
so yes it’s sent some people batshit.
Questionaboutjoboffer · 13/09/2022 18:45
Yes I think generally people seem to have lost the plot a bit - on the news anyway. At work I haven’t heard one person mention it.
This morning someone on the news was talking of being faced with the unthinkable (people filing last the Queen’s coffin). But death isn’t the unthinkable, and so many people have died this week, a lot of them much younger than 96 so it seems a bit too much all of this. A way that the RF are keeping themselves in people’s consciousness.
It’s interesting though all of it - what she represented and symbolised and how her death has in a way reminded us of the impernanence of everything.
I was sad too, she has been around forever, but I wish we celebrated the ordinary and everyday more. She was just human.
Sparklingbrook · 13/09/2022 18:46
I thought it was more like it was on here during Covid. With the daft questions etc. Still just under a week to go as well.
LetMeSpeak · 13/09/2022 18:46
Why do I feel so many republicans have be counting down the days for the Queens death. They have waisted no time in using the period of mourning to attack the royal family and even the dead. They attack anyone who simply isn’t a staunch republican. It’s sickening. It’s making me uncomfortable to share my views on here. I’m met with constant attacks and borderline abuse.
I think people will look back and see how inappropriate they were behaving. It’s actually causing damage to the republican movement, not helping them.

Oh dear. Here's another one.
OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/09/2022 18:48
It's all batshit.
It does feel as though things are destablising rapidly now - as though we are reaching a tipping point in this country.
MarshaBradyo · 13/09/2022 18:48
I do think people could be a bit live and live on here re being a royalist / republican or in between
I do think it’s a big deal but I’m not upset if other people are indifferent
The vibe is quite frenetic though - I think we’ve had a mad few years

I agree but similarity it tends to be set of by endless threads with people that disagree with Brexit or the monarchy.
It’s absolutely fine to discuss becoming a republic but it s not going to go down well when an excellent Queen has just died. Same as there were and are endless Brexit threads just after the leave vote. It’s not unreasonable to discuss Brexit now we can see how it’s beginning to shake down.
And it’s not “forelock tugging” to suggest not starting negative threads. So people are “batshit”. As mumsnet always says “ different people like different things”.
