Period of mourning has sent some people batshit?

LimpBiskit · 13/09/2022 17:45

I've noticed a ramping up of crazy on here over the last few days with some odd threads. Also more fratchy interactions on more balanced ones. AIBU that the queen's death has destabilised things a bit?

OP posts:

Most of the extremeness is because of the media and social media, everyone trying to outmourn each other, constant emails from things not opening, 30 years ago no one would have known what was happening 24 hours a day or how others were mourning. Live streaming and queue trackers all add to this and of course FOMO

Lex345 · 16/09/2022 05:50

I would consider myself to have a royalist lean, I love the history and the pageantry, but this is becoming a bit much even for me.

Its the wall to wall news coverage driving it I think. I work until 6pm in the week and I like to watch a bit of news when I finish. I really struggled to find any news channel covering anything other than the Queen's death.

There was a fairly big earthquake in PNG for example, I wanted to see how the flooding in Pakistan was hopefully resolving, WHO released guidance that the end of the pandemic was in sight, James Webb released more phenomenal photos-all of these things are interesting for me but hardly covered. There was a trial in 2020 filtering microplastics from the pacific ocean-this is huge-barely covered.

I feel like we are only allowed to see the news the media decides is worth covering. There used to be more variety in reporting. People get fixated because of this, I think.

MN is always batshit

Thepeopleversuswork · 16/09/2022 06:34

@Questionaboutjoboffer

I was overheard talking about it to a junior team member: I later had a meeting with a more senior colleague who said something like "I know what you mean but I just wouldn't go there about the funeral -- some people are upset and taking it very seriously and you could cause offence".

It wasn't like "you're treasonous". But still totally batshit to think this view can't be discussed openly with civility and respect.

Bretonbear · 16/09/2022 06:55

Andrew must be so relieved she was still alive to pay off his case. Not sure his brother would have been so keen. Either way, makes me sick. Weren't there photos of Epstein and Maxwell at Balmoral? All absolutely crazy crazy crazy!!!

Bearsan · 16/09/2022 07:01

It's like some people's intelligence has gone back 400 years. Mob rule.
No critical thinking or other opinions about anything allowed without shrieking and wailing.
I'm expecting burning at the stake to make a comeback.

I agree. I totally respect people's right to grieve but I find the "we must all grieve" thing pretty Orwellian and disturbing honestly. Can't wait for it to be over.

Diverseopinions · 16/09/2022 07:13

It's generally not considered a positive thing to speak ill of the dead, especially on the event of their funeral. I don't think it's surprising that people want to stick with this convention.

I remember that when Nelson Mandela died, some UK viewers complained about their sports coverage being interrupted on the telly. You are always going to get some people who don't want to honour the feelings of others.

I think that if you view social media sparingly and selectively, you won't be quite so overwhelmed by the deluge of amplified sentiment.

DancingBudgie · 16/09/2022 07:15

Makes me laugh how no one gave a second thought to the RF.
Then suddenly the queen dies and it's a competitive grief fest.

RiftGibbon · 16/09/2022 07:21

Diverse, I don't see how objecting to the concept of monarchy, or suggesting that the current hysteria is excessive are speaking ill of the dead.
HM, as a person, may have been decent, I never met her. But the idea of a commonwealth, founded in Empire (which displaced, killed and destroyed so many indigenous people, and stole their land and wealth) is sickening. HM herself was not responsible but a monarch as a figurehead represents that "triumph of empire".

Objecting to tax payers footing the bill for an extravagant funeral procession is not speaking ill of the dead.

Objecting to so much being closed (specifically food banks) isn't speaking ill of the dead.

There are other examples but I have already taken up a lot of space on this thread.

I'm not talking about people "speaking ill of the dead". I'm talking about people expressing, in a civil and respectful way, a sense of ennui at wall to wall media coverage which means its impossible to read about anything else or the fact that everything is cancelled so even public services are impacted. Or people having a discussion in general terms about whether the Monarchy as an institution serves us well.

These things are normal and healthy topics of discussion in a free society and we should be free to talk amongst ourselves about them without being accused of "speaking ill of the dead".

MrsFezziwig · 16/09/2022 03:36

You’re right, you don’t need to see it. So why are you choosing to do so?

Because it is entirely possible to flick on the news in the morning or after work in the vain hope that after a week of continuous 'Mournhub' they might dedicate more then five minutes to events other then interviewing Joe Randoms in a long queue about how long they have been there, where they have come from and the importance of wearing good shoes. A mass grave has just been found recently liberated Isyum in Ukraine, early reports are suggesting it is going to equal those found in Bosnia. But no, we get Sue and Dave from Doncaster talking about the warm coats they have been wearing in a long queue. Yes, I have switched over to Al Jazeera as they are still acting like an actual news channel but it is a shame that the nation's national broadcaster has basically morphed into a mawkish sycophantic emotionally incontinent borderline cult channel. There are millions of people in the UK completely indifferent or at the very least have just moved on from the initial news of the Queen's death and getting on with their lives yet the BBC would have you believe that the entire country are sobbing away still and utterly enthralled to the Royal family which is not the case.

This. It really is time to talk about other things now.

Exactly! But instead the news this morning showed an interview with a random woman in Cardiff who was crying and saying it was such a shock.

She was 96 FFS!!!!

Emmakins66 · 16/09/2022 08:04

Honestly it's a bit pathetic. The whole country feels like some massive cult.

FourChimneys · 16/09/2022 08:12

Lapun I respect your view but the most staunch republican I know is 92. Not all older people hold the same views.

Yes and afraid to step out of line on Monday 😯

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 16/09/2022 08:21

BambinaJAS · 16/09/2022 04:19

This is 100% correct.

The whole process is a manipulation from start to finish, designed to cement the monarchy.

Thats all this is.

The Royalists are simply blind to how they are being manipulated by the monarchy.

It really is quite sad to watch.

Yep.

This is why the stuff about respect, not speaking ill of the dead and all the rest of it is so fundamentally incorrect. Because this whole process is inherently politicised, and the people always have every right to be critical of political processes. The institution essentially use the grief of the bereaved relatives as a shield.

Inkanta · 16/09/2022 08:30

... Someone has started a thread - 'would it be disrespectful to do anything other than stay inside' on Monday. That's a bit like a cult 😕

Stay inside the pub maybe, should one be open!

This is how I feel. People being arrested for silently protesting and the mob are baying for more of it!

A local ice-cream parlour posted on facebook last night that they will be opening from 1pm-10pm on Monday. The comments are insane! Apparently they should be boycotted and put out of business as punishment for their lack of "respect".

Haha yes. Vault only, the beer garden would be unseemly.

apintortwo · 16/09/2022 09:18

its impossible to read about anything else

Really? There are hundreds of newspapers you can read online or Youtube news channels. Hardly 'impossible'

Or people having a discussion in general terms about whether the Monarchy as an institution serves us well

There's a time and place for everything. People having these 'discussions' now are obvious agitators who are hijacking a difficult time for millions of decent people to push their own agenda

The time and the place is now. Those of you who try and decide otherwise forget your place. It isn't for you to decide.

apintortwo · 16/09/2022 09:26

It isn't your place either
