To be heartbroken about Douglas Henshall not being a lovely guy I thought he was.

Just that really.
Love him in Shetland. Followed him on Twitter and found out he is not a nice guy at all. Quite shocking tweets to be honest - and he's been like that for years!
I know about actors being different people to their characters, but somehow I imagined him being more like Jimmy Perez and less like a prick he seems to be. I am genuinely upset.

Yes. My DH's father was Irish and DH and his sister were sent to Catholic Sunday school. They went to the local non Catholic primary. He was terribly bullied. Separate schools exist in Scotland to this day and expect sectarianism is just as bad now as it ever was.

Separate schools here in NI too, huns, fenians etc still bandied about freely, 'aitch' 'haitch' still used as a marker...
Change happens veeeeery slowly.

Well if ever a thread title didn't match the contents....I was expecting a dramatic reveal of some heinous offence on the scale of kicking kittens.

I only saw half the title and like others, thought he'd died.

Sorry, I can't edit the title now... 😆
I see now that most people don't share my feelings. It's fine - I'd rather think that I am overreacting than that Dougie is an a-hole :) It's a bit of both though.

He should have known better before posting it. Sectarianism remains a huge problem here.

I watch Shetland, but to be honest he looks bored rigid at being there. Add that to Tosh's constant face pulling and Sandy's accent and I'm surprised I'm still watching it at all.

But Sandy is the only one with an authentic accent!

carefullycourageous · 06/09/2022 20:40

Is Sandy's accent authentic? I have no clue of course but it is very distinctive.

in his lemon trousers and red blazer, striding around Shetland.

Absolutely.

And I see he has now started striding around the Pyrenees in a sort of wool combo coat which looks completely ill advised for the weather so I'd like to see that.

Awrite · 06/09/2022 20:44

I love him. Follow him on Twitter, don't mind grown up language.

You don't know much about the vitriol spouted by separatist and Unionist factions on Twitter then

I’m well aware of the vitriol spouted on both sides and wouldn’t defend a lot of either side. But what I said was I didn’t see anti unionist vitriol on his feed ie written by him.

Belindabelle · 06/09/2022 20:48

I like Dougie Henshall. The person/actor, not the characters he plays.

He often tweets funny stories about his life and his daughter who has a rather profane turn of phrase for a five year old. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree there it would seem.

I class him as one of the good guys and not a wank. Wee Chewin the Fat reference there for you.

THisbackwithavengeance · 06/09/2022 20:57

I hear you OP. I even said similar to DH the other night.

Dougie Henshall as Inspector Perez = ultra hot and attractive. Probably my ideal man.

Dougie Henshall as Dougie Henshall = not even slightly attractive and a dickhead. Wouldn't touch him with a barge pole.

I can only say he's a good actor.

I hope you're not Scottish, because this is what Wikipeadia has to be say about Steven Robertson who plays Sandy:

Robertson grew up in the small village of Vidlin in the Shetland Islands of Scotland, with his two sisters.

Shetland really is not full of people from Glasgow, with strong Glaswegian accents. I'll give you Tosh's face pulling.

I can't stand it when men (and women) make those aggressive, casual remarks and start talking in that sort of rough way. It makes Dougie Henshall seem as thick as mince.

I've followed him for years and he's always struck me as kind, thoughtful, intelligent and considerate. I like him. He tweeted something football related and deleted it within 12 hours and apologised for it, agreeing it was offensive and misjudged. I'm not changing my opinion of him, he's a decent bloke as far as I can tell. How many of us have honestly never said anything that we later regretted and that could have been offensive to someone?

Every time I watch Shetland he makes me think of Louis Walsh. It's most perturbing.

Oh hell, I couldn't think who he reminded me of and it's Louis Walsh! I

People use cunt as a term of endearment

And another one spouting nonsense.

GlasgowGal82 · 06/09/2022 21:37

I like Douglas Henshall but I can't get outraged about how he communicates on twitter. Having lived and worked in Glasgow for 15+ years I can confirm that the word c*t is a mild slur but it is also commonly used as a noun to replace person/mate/guy/one, just as f*k is commonly used as a multi-purpose verb. It's perhaps not used in polite society, but it's definitely common street language and anyone who has spent any time in Glasgow without realising that must have been pretty sheltered. I worked in the public sector and it was definitely used in my office on a number of occasions. I'd prefer not to hear it, but don't think of it as deeply offensive in a way that people from elsewhere obviously do. It reminds me that Douglas is a certain type - west coast male of a certain age, bit of a dinosaur, but pretty harmless. Either that or he's using the word to be ironic, and it's clearly not travelling well.

Funny isn't it? How hotness depends almost entirely on personality!

I was just having a word with myself the other day that not all men are dickheads.
I had a divorce a couple of years ago and only now started to even consider possibility of seeing a guy again. So I was watching Shetland and thinking 'aww, I'd so date DI Perez if he wasn't so damn busy working 24/7 and if he was not a fictional character 😆'. But he is a fictional character and real Dougie is not much like him at all... Ah, well...

I had no idea Scotland had this issue between religions.
I'm really shocked.

oh cmon, heartbroken?! you also didn’t see Harry styles spitting on anyone, you saw people say online that the video looks like that so it must be true 🙄. Are you in your teens?
