To be heartbroken about Douglas Henshall not being a lovely guy I thought he was.

Just that really.
Love him in Shetland. Followed him on Twitter and found out he is not a nice guy at all. Quite shocking tweets to be honest - and he's been like that for years!
I know about actors being different people to their characters, but somehow I imagined him being more like Jimmy Perez and less like a prick he seems to be. I am genuinely upset.

OP posts:

He is a good guy….he very reasonably hates the Tories…like most educated people who don’t like the wealthy crapping on the poor…WTF dont you like about that???

Well maybe you should be "batting an eyelid"

Sectarianism is a malignant blight on Scotland.

Absolutely this.

MissAmbrosia · 06/09/2022 19:35

I love him in Shetland, though he is shockingly miscast from the books.

I too love the books and think he's well cast. Who would you imagine in the role based on the books?

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 06/09/2022 19:43

Thank you Dexra. I expect there will be the usual tedious posts claiming everyone in Scotland uses the c-word/ it's a term of endearment/ nothing to get upset about.

I'm a farmer and obviously mix with loads of Scottish men and women known for their plain speaking. People do use the c-word but only in a blue moon. And also good to see you on a thread Lass

KassandraOfSparta · 06/09/2022 18:54

People always say this. It's just not true. Although it might be used in a less aggressive way, it's still considered really rude, very offensive. It is not acceptable language in shops, workplaces, schools, social media.

I agree .It really isn't true. I don't know what posters who persist with this are trying to achieve?

Is it some sort of "wha's like us? myth?

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 06/09/2022 19:52

Butchyrestingface · 06/09/2022 19:02

Same. Water off a duck's back.

If anything, I reckon he's toned it down a bit for the Twitter audience.

Why are some of so keen to be so cool about sectarian slurs?

You're really not coming across as cool btw, far from it.

Posters on MN are always trying to portray us Scots as universally in favour of independence when nothing could be further from the truth. We are not one homogenous mass.

Why thank you. I'm from a farming background and agree it's a word which would be used in extreme circumstances and I can't recall my immediate family using it at all.

BuenoSucia · 06/09/2022 19:57

Kidz r crying now. Dougie Henshall not fae fair isle? 😭 he’s probably not even part Spanish.

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 06/09/2022 19:58

If you're offended by cunts and pricks you have no place on the Internet my love. Are you a rangers fan per chance?

This is sort of what started it.

But then people started looking into his old tweets and some ugly stuff came out...

I live in a C of E parish and went to a C of E school and honestly it seems pretty accurate to me.

Swingsarefun · 06/09/2022 20:00

Sectarianism is Scotlands shame. I cannot abide it from either side. It’s so pathetic it’s disgraceful.

I like Douglas Henshall in the series but in the books Perez is supposed to look Spanish - it's in the name - Perez.

mintich · 06/09/2022 20:00

The sectarian slurs are disgusting. It's really put me off him

I'm not keen to be seen as 'cool'. I do think he tones it down for Twitter - I see he's removed the post and apologised.

Are you really heartbroken though? I mean, on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being ‘meh, hun, cba’ and 10 being ‘omg I can never get out of bed again’, can you indicate the level of heart brokenness you’re experiencing after an actor tweeted something you didn’t like about football?

Just asking.

Butchyrestingface · 06/09/2022 20:03

OP clarified if wasn't the football tweet that upset her.

ShandaLear · 06/09/2022 20:04

Meh, actors are usually a bit more feisty than the characters they portray. I can barely be bothered to lift my hands to clutch my pearls at this, tbh.

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 06/09/2022 19:58

No I'm not a Rangers' fan but unlike some posters I think sectarianism is a blight on Scotland and don't airily waive it away , because , hey I'm sooo cool.

Your comment about "no place on the internet" is so ridiculous it's not worth responding to.

I think I blame Peter Capaldi and Paul Higgins- very rare examples of outrageous and creative swearing which were genuinely funny. Unfortunately it's paved the way for any one lacking in the same imagination and creativity to think adding the c word is automatically funny.

howdidigethere · 06/09/2022 20:04

I get you, OP. It's disappointing when we have these celeb crushes and they turn out to be not so nice as we'd imagined. I'm no shrinking violet but I don't use or hear the C word bandied about much but if that's his vernacular (or showing off on Twitter?) then OK. As for the sectarian slur.. not great but fairly common unfortunately.

Remember, it's Jimmy Perez you lurve not Dougie H.

calmlakes · 06/09/2022 20:06

It isn't about football though is it, football has just got tangled up in it.
Sectarianism used to regularly lead to blokes getting stabbed when I was growing up, football or not it needs taking seriously.

wildthingsinthenight · 06/09/2022 20:07

YABU.
Also Harry didn't spit.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 06/09/2022 20:07

He lives near me and always seems nice when I see him out and about, OP. If that's any consolation.

Thought he'd kicked the bucket when I saw the snippet of your thread title.

Oh another poster who's happy with sectarianism.

I see we've had "not batted an eye-lid" and water of a duck's back and now "clutch my pearls".

It's a real MN bingo card of clichés

Puffykins · 06/09/2022 20:07

I'm a Christian and an Anglican and found the tweet about that hilarious. Also he might have a point. Especially in light of the most recent Lambeth conference.
