To be heartbroken about Douglas Henshall not being a lovely guy I thought he was.

Just that really.
Love him in Shetland. Followed him on Twitter and found out he is not a nice guy at all. Quite shocking tweets to be honest - and he's been like that for years!
I know about actors being different people to their characters, but somehow I imagined him being more like Jimmy Perez and less like a prick he seems to be. I am genuinely upset.

I didn't say he's a monster 😂 just not a very nice guy .

i love his twitter - his unbridled fury at the state of everything combined with his baffled but adoring comments about 5 year old daughter is just 😁

On the evidence of some swearymary tweets? Aye. Ok then.

AgentProvocateur · 06/09/2022 18:49

I’m not making excuses for him, but cunt isn’t used in Glasgow the same way that it’s used elsewhere. It can often be affectionate/jocular. “He’s a good cunt”.

Underanothersky · 06/09/2022 18:50

Also, so what? He doesn't owe you niceness

Mrsjayy · 06/09/2022 18:51

The blocked out word is Huns a derogatory term for a glasgow rangers supporter usually used by a celtic supporters. Sectarianism is a live and well in Scotland! His rants are about football and unionism

People always say this. It's just not true. Although it might be used in a less aggressive way, it's still considered really rude, very offensive. It is not acceptable language in shops, workplaces, schools, social media.

Of COURSE he's a Yesser. The CyberNats are always the sweary ones. Him and that odious Frankie Boyle would get on well.

WhereYouLeftIt · 06/09/2022 18:55

You probably won't want to watch this OP, but personally I found it very funny.

SmallElephants · 06/09/2022 18:56

Ok. Points.

  1. He’s a great guy.
2/ totally normal language for Glasgow 3/ what kind of standard are you holding him up to? 4/ heartbroken?
KassandraOfSparta · 06/09/2022 18:57

Can we please stop with the "totally normal language for Glasgow". Because it's not.

Ilovelindor · 06/09/2022 18:58

Is it bad I snorted at the CofE one?

It’s not acceptable in shops or schools, but it’s everyday ‘street language’. It’s so normalised that it’s lost its shock value.

YouHaveAnArse · 06/09/2022 18:59

Jeezo, you'd probably get angina if you ever read/watched any Limmy.

bluevioletsky · 06/09/2022 18:59

He’s Glaswegian, so use of the word ‘cunt’ as punctuation isn’t exactly unusual up here and isn’t met with quite such raised eyebrows as it is elsewhere.
The Huns comment was arguably silly but he’s deleted it and apologised - may well have written it after a few given it was an Old Firm weekend. I’ve certainly never seen anything else on his Twitter that’s been upsetting….

JudgeJ · 06/09/2022 19:00

HairyNipple · 06/09/2022 18:36

The Huns tweet is not what I found upsetting. It's loads of his other tweets with cunts and pricks and deserving to die in fire.
Maybe I'm too peral-clutchy, I don't know...
Feel free to ignore my disappointing thread :)

You're on MN, the home of some the words you object to! A lot of football teams have local rivalries peppered with some strong language and name calling, twas ever so.

Well, maybe heartbroken is a wrong word for this. Just disappointed. Only coz I fancied him a bit :) And no high standards - I swear a lot myself. But not like that - he sounds just nasty.
Also - saw Harry Styles spitting in that guy's lap today... I love Harry - he is great, but WTF is wrong with people??

OP I know the language isn’t nice but are you from Glasgow?

I am and maybe I’m hardened to it but it’s pretty standard language for Celtic fans to refer to Rangers fans. The Rangers fans regularly call Celtic fans fenians, tims, tarriers.

i don’t really bat an eyelid.

Huns is not ok.

Nor is fenian or tarrier.

Being from Glasgow makes most more aware of this, not less.

Same. Water off a duck's back.

If anything, I reckon he's toned it down a bit for the Twitter audience.

ChaToilLeam · 06/09/2022 19:03

Honestly, he would fit in perfectly with most of my pals.

"heartbroken" ?!?!?

I thought MN was for grown-ups.

Anyway, DH is nothing like the JP that AC described.

He didn't spit!

As for the rest, I hate the football shit up here and stay well away.

CactusBlossom · 06/09/2022 19:06

That's the trouble, isn't it? You see someone in the public eye and construct a persona because you don't really know them. It's a bit of a let-down when you find out they are either ordinary or well below average. I think this happens particularly with actors as they inhabit the characters they portray, and can become associated with a particular character (type-casting, perhaps).

I just don't want to know if David Attenborough is anything but lovely, though!

DisforDarkChocolate · 06/09/2022 19:07

I feel very same about The Apprentice. I only expect actors to act. I'm sadder that this season of Shetland is crap.
