To be heartbroken about Douglas Henshall not being a lovely guy I thought he was.

Just that really.
Love him in Shetland. Followed him on Twitter and found out he is not a nice guy at all. Quite shocking tweets to be honest - and he's been like that for years!
I know about actors being different people to their characters, but somehow I imagined him being more like Jimmy Perez and less like a prick he seems to be. I am genuinely upset.

I live in the west of Scotland and this is fairly standard chat. People use cunt as a term of endearment and if you listen to Scottish comedians, you'll hear it a lot. Never had much of an opinion on him (despite my disappointment of him looking nothing like the Jimmy Perez I'd pictured when reading the Shetland books) but this really isn't something to get worked up about, he was never claiming to be a saint.

QuestionableMouse · 06/09/2022 20:09

I think he's just fine BTW. Just very straight speaking.

I don't think you can cherry pick random tweets he's made and decide that's his entire personality.

I just had a look through his twitter feed for the past few months and genuinely, unless you are a diehard Tory I struggle to see anything anyone would be offended by. And the anti-Tory stuff is generally policy criticisms not personal. Likewise, he is pro indy but I haven't seen anything particularly vitriolic towards unionists on his feed.

Julia234 · 06/09/2022 20:11

Some of the loveliest, most helpful and interesting people I know would have no problem saying similar. I don’t understand why it has upset you? He clearly has a ‘taking the p*ss’ attitude most of the time.

Incidentally two of the worst people I have met in my 35 years, happen to come across as the most helpful, kindest and complimentary of people when in actual fact, they were putting on a show.

I would trust a person far more that could be ‘inappropriate’ out loud in front of the world, over somebody who is just pretending to be nice behind a facade of jealousy, manipulation and self serving behaviour.

Ginger1982 · 06/09/2022 20:11

He should have known better before posting it. Sectarianism remains a huge problem here.

I watch Shetland, but to be honest he looks bored rigid at being there. Add that to Tosh's constant face pulling and Sandy's accent and I'm surprised I'm still watching it at all.

If you're offended by cunts and pricks you have no place on the Internet my love. Are you a rangers fan per chance?

WTAF does this even mean? What a stupid comment. Nice to see the sectarianism alive and well on this thread.

calmlakes · 06/09/2022 20:06

can you indicate the level of heart brokenness you’re experiencing after an actor tweeted something you didn’t like about football?

It isn't about football though is it, football has just got tangled up in it.
Sectarianism used to regularly lead to blokes getting stabbed when I was growing up, football or not it needs taking seriously.

Yes. My DH's father was Irish and DH and his sister were sent to Catholic Sunday school. They went to the local non Catholic primary. He was terribly bullied. Separate schools exist in Scotland to this day and expect sectarianism is just as bad now as it ever was.

Well if ever a thread title didn't match the contents....I was expecting a dramatic reveal of some heinous offence on the scale of kicking kittens.

I know. It’s all a bit of a nonsense really.

knittingaddict · 06/09/2022 20:15

fatgirlslimmer · 06/09/2022 19:19

I’m just glad he’s not dead. I think the title is a tad dramatic.

I know. I thought it was going to be a death announcement too.

Apparently HS didn't spit, so that might cheer you up op.

You do need better news sources though.

IchbineinBerlinerin · 06/09/2022 20:17

He's Scottish...we swear a lot😅

CaptainThe95thRifles · 06/09/2022 20:17

I mean, the sectarianism isn't great, but the sweariness and anti-Tory sentiments are quite relatable!

You don't know much about the vitriol spouted by separatist and Unionist factions on Twitter then

saltofcelery · 06/09/2022 20:18

Not sure why he's apologised. Opinions expressed are held by many. Also have no idea who he is 😂

People always say this. It's just not true. Although it might be used in a less aggressive way, it's still considered really rude, very offensive. It is not acceptable language in shops, workplaces, schools, social media.

Really? I'm not from Glasgow but I live here and would say that it is true. You may not like it, but it's definitely commonly used in this context. I'd never heard 'everycunt' used in place of 'everyone' until I moved here. Of course it's still strong salty language but I don't think it's widely seen in Glasgow to be as offensive as it might be elsewhere.

Just my outsider's perspective.

JohnsShirt · 06/09/2022 20:20

Sectarianism is as bad as ever, I can't abide it at all. I saw a lot of it back in June because Harry Styles played at Ibrox.
I can't get my head round it being that petty, but with really an incredibly vile undercurrent.
A lot goes over my head as I'm not into football at all and neither is Dd, anyone who carries it on is pretty low.

Americano75 · 06/09/2022 20:20

SmallElephants · 06/09/2022 18:56

Ok. Points.

  1. He’s a great guy.
2/ totally normal language for Glasgow 3/ what kind of standard are you holding him up to? 4/ heartbroken?

This.

I too love the books and think he's well cast. Who would you imagine in the role based on the books?

He was described much in terms of his spanish heritage, so he should be dark haired/dark eyed. But then Duncan is too nice and Sandy too old. I can live with it.

Me too!

HairyNipple · 06/09/2022 18:36

The Huns tweet is not what I found upsetting. It's loads of his other tweets with cunts and pricks and deserving to die in fire.
Maybe I'm too peral-clutchy, I don't know...
Feel free to ignore my disappointing thread :)

Yes mayeb a little pearl-clutchy, I think cunts and pricks are fine.

I am sure Perez has heard worse Grin

He grew up in Barrhead. I think he's playing the hard man

typingcake · 06/09/2022 20:31

Some saying it’s commonly used and some saying it’s not… I think it comes down the type of background you come from… it was commonly used in the Council estate I grew up on and a lot of my pals from other parts of central scotland use it still.

bellac11 · 06/09/2022 20:32

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/09/2022 20:00

I like Douglas Henshall in the series but in the books Perez is supposed to look Spanish - it's in the name - Perez.

They should have cast Michael Portillo, half Spanish, half Scottish.

Wooden though.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 06/09/2022 20:33

I only saw half the title and like others, thought he'd died.
