To not say hello to mum's friend when she visits

I'm an adult currently living with my mum in order to save and buy a house. My mum's friend is currently downstairs and I've told my mum (respectfully) I won't say hi. I'm working from home and honestly could spare the time.

AIBU?

can't you just pop your head round the door and say hello. I'm working, catch up with you another time?

Snog · 01/09/2022 14:56

YANBU

Jadecarrot · 01/09/2022 14:56

But you have time to post about it.... bit rude!

AlisonDonut · 01/09/2022 14:57

Just go down say hi and then go back up again.

And grow up a little if you are going to have a house of your own one day.

Unicorn2022 · 01/09/2022 14:57

You're seriously posting on MN rather than taking the same amount of time to say a polite hello to your mum's friend?

SleepingStandingUp · 01/09/2022 14:57

Is she badgering you to come down and say hi? Why won't you if you have the time? Do you not like them?

Lbnc2021 · 01/09/2022 14:57

It’ll have taken you longer to post this thread being so dramatic 🤨

Violettaa · 01/09/2022 14:58

If possible I’d pop down at a convienient point and say ‘Hello, so lovely to see you, but I’m afraid I’m working upstairs so can’t stop. Byeeee!’

Obviously that doesn’t work if you’re on back to back calls, but if not, refusing to say hi for less time than a loo break would take seems a bit rude.

Veeragall · 01/09/2022 14:58

Seems rude to me and unkind towards your mum.

pieami · 01/09/2022 14:58

It's not an issue about having time. I also have no problem with the person

I've voted YABU, I think If you've got a minute and are getting a drink/food then say hello BUT if your dm expects you to stop working to say hello and you're not planning on a break or in a online meeting etc then then obviously say no but if she was still there when you've finished I'd say hello.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 01/09/2022 15:00

Then what’s the issue exactly?
Are you worried she’ll ask you if you’re all set for school?

Unicorn2022 · 01/09/2022 15:00

Just go and say hello to your mum's friend. It's a very small thing to do for your mum considering you are living with her to save up. I honestly don't understand the dilemma here.

mountainsunsets · 01/09/2022 15:01

I've voted YABU as you clearly do have the time if you can write a thread moaning about it 🙄

Agadoodoododont · 01/09/2022 15:01

You are an adult, not a 13 year old ( who can be stroppy, don’t talk to me types)?
Grow up, grow some manners. The words you are looking for are “hi X how are you?” It’s quite easy.

Bobshhh · 01/09/2022 15:01

Hello Susan, lovely to see you. Sorry I can't stick around, need to pop back upstairs for my next meeting.

How hard can it be?

NoSquirrels · 01/09/2022 15:02

Why won’t you say hello?

HappyHamsters · 01/09/2022 15:02

Whats the issue.

Vikinga · 01/09/2022 15:02

A reverse surely?

pieami · 01/09/2022 15:03

This may seem superficial. But I had a shower during lunch and put on my pyjamas - would have to change. And my hair is looking very unkept as I have applied a rosemary oil mask. I would have to put in some time to groom myself which I just cannot be bothered to do.

I'm also just not in the mood for small talk.

Were you raised so rude? If i was your dm I would be cringing right now.

So are you just bored and felt like posting a tedious question?

pieami · 01/09/2022 15:05

I've asked my mum not to mention I was home. I wouldn't want to actually offend my mum's friend.

I’d say hello if I went downstairs and needed something - I wouldn’t ignore them but I actually probably wouldn’t go downstairs to say hello if I was working and in my pjs if I didn’t need something

HappyHamsters · 01/09/2022 15:06

Does your mum and her friend want to small talk with you
