DD had a party yesterday for her birthday and instead of getting 2 of the supermarket traybake things for £6/7 each, we ordered a Costco sheet cake thing.

OMG I have never tested anything so awful in my life. The actual sponge cake is passable. The jam - well I've never tasted anything so synthetic and un-jam like in my life. And the frosting is just 100% sugar.

But people rave about how lovely it is?😱

No-one with any taste buds EVER raved about how lovely a Costco cake was!!

AceSpades54321 · 28/08/2022 14:22

I find all the food at Costco pretty poor quality tbh.

Plump82 · 28/08/2022 14:23

I'm probably going to be in the minority but I love a Costo birthday cake.

WhereAreMyAirpods · 28/08/2022 14:25

I disagree that it's all low quality We have found their mince, chicken, salmon etc brilliant. DS loves their big pot of hummus. No issues or complaints about the trays of danish pastries, part baked baguettes, wraps or any of the other stuff we've bought.

The cake though.... blurgh. And ALWAYS on a "how much would you pay for a cake" thread where someone is begrudging £40 or whatever for someone to slave over a full-size Minion replica, posters will pipe up saying just go to Costco as their cakes are amazing.

Well, they're not.

Costco is awesome
their birthday cakes are just “gack” 🤢🤢🤢

NoDairyNoProblem · 28/08/2022 14:27

There is a ‘dessert bar’ in our town that sell Costco cake by the slice and people go nuts for it on social media - I can never understand way. It’s rank!

cattydee · 28/08/2022 14:28

I love there birthday cake !!

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 28/08/2022 14:28

I love the red velvet cake and the carrot cake.
Sorry.

WhereAreMyAirpods · 28/08/2022 14:29

I have had their red velvet cake before and it was OK. Not fabulous, but just OK.

The birthday sheet cake though... inedible. And I am usually a person who will happily eat anything.

Costco cakes are disgustingly sweet. Back in the days of working in the office, if someone brought one in for a birthday there would always be a lot left at the end of the day and half the office would say "how lovely but I'm on a diet" when they wouldn't gor other cakes.

WhereAreMyAirpods · 28/08/2022 14:31

To clarify. this is the sort of cake I mean. The large rectangular order in advance ones, £14.99. Not the round carrot or red velvet ones.

They have American buttercream, which is super sweet. I love them 😍

backaftera2yearbreak · 28/08/2022 14:34

Love a Costco cake.

Dalaidramailama · 28/08/2022 14:36

YABU

My neighbour drops me round huge slabs of this stuff and I stand in the kitchen scooping all the sugar fondant off the top with a fork like some sort of crack addict. It’s mass produced but dear god…. I would happily munch my way through it regularly if it wasn’t for the fact youde get diabetes 🤦‍♀️.

dannydyerismydad · 28/08/2022 14:36

Everyone I know raves about them.

They are horrible. I'm not entirely sure they were ever designed to be eaten, they are designed for clowns to fling at each other.

They have no flavour aside from tooth aching sweetness.

Recycledblonde · 28/08/2022 14:36

Never had their cakes but love their scones and chocolates chip shortbread. Their wine isn’t bad either.😀

Thehop · 28/08/2022 14:37

They’re absolutely vile things

WhereAreMyAirpods · 28/08/2022 14:38

Oh yes their own brand Kirkland prosecco is excellent.

I think cakes are actually stunt cakes. There for the photos, not actually intended to be eaten. Haven't tried the scones or shortbread but their croissants are nice.

Their cakes are rank IMO. There was someone at my old work that RAVED about them and would bring one in quite often. I dont understand it. Same lady thought Hersheys kisses were lovely and I think they taste of vomit so I’m putting it down to dodgy tastebuds.

AllTheSunshine · 28/08/2022 14:39

Rank.
They taste of sugar, chemicals and nothing else.

WhereAreMyAirpods · 28/08/2022 14:40

When we picked up DD's cake on friday afternoon there were about 6 cages each with about 10 cakes waiting to be collected. that's a lot of people in glasgow either wasting cake or actually enjoying this sort of synthetic crap.

OP posts:
helpfulperson · 28/08/2022 14:42

I think some extent yes they are stunt cakes. The provide an affordable option for events where you would like a personalised cake but can't or don't want to pay a fortune. In my experience most people will eat a slice quite happily even if it isn't the most amazing cake. And as a PP mentioned if all else fails you can always just eat all the leftover icing!

Longingforatikihut · 28/08/2022 14:44

I have a colleague that fills the staff room with cakes and pastries whenever she gets a Costco haul. She once accidentally heard me say it all tastes vile (I was talking to someone else and really didn't mean to hurt any feelings) and now she brings me a bag of apples every time she goes as a running joke. I live cake etc, and I look like a looooooove cake. But yeah, give me an apple over Costco cakes.

BritWifeInUSA · 28/08/2022 14:47

Costco in general are expensive and not that great in terms of quality. There are much better warehouse clubs here.

Their cakes have that synthetic taste to them with way too much sugar.

RampantIvy · 28/08/2022 14:49

IMO people who think the sickly sweet confections that pass for cakes at Costco have never tasted decent home baking.

I like cake, but find the Costco cakes too sweet and artificial tasting.
