DD had a party yesterday for her birthday and instead of getting 2 of the supermarket traybake things for £6/7 each, we ordered a Costco sheet cake thing.

OMG I have never tested anything so awful in my life. The actual sponge cake is passable. The jam - well I've never tasted anything so synthetic and un-jam like in my life. And the frosting is just 100% sugar.

But people rave about how lovely it is?😱

The giant double chocolate chip
Muffins however? Oh..magawd! So freaking good

I clicked to post this opinion too. I don't live near a costco anymore and the un-iced muffins are what I miss most.

You're paying about £15 for a cake that feed about 30. It's never going to be good. But I find any bought celebration cakes tasteless so would never buy them for me or the family normally.

I am lucky enough to be someone who enjoys baking and can whip up a birthday cake fairly easily, however, I do like it to be appreciated. As I found out for my DD's 5th birthday party a few years ago, after a valiant effort was made to make a 6 layer unicorn cake, children at a party do not appreciate the home- madeness of a cake.

So I'm afraid for my children's parties it's Costco all the way, but for the family celebration, I do a home made one.

TenoringBehind · 28/08/2022 16:12

I find them really unpleasant but know lots of people who rave about them.

BettyOBarley · 28/08/2022 16:13

I love their carrot cake, mmm gorgeous.

Not tried the sheet cake though.

WinterDeWinter · 28/08/2022 16:17

I hate them - I can literally taste the trans fats. Someone mentioned this style of cake on the quite fascinating 'American Food' thread a few days ago which was about how Americans (broad generalisation) cook much less frequently from scratch, especially in terms of baking and desserts. I think Costco are American aren't they.

Mosso · 28/08/2022 16:17

They're disgusting but cheap so people like them for that

WhereAreMyAirpods · 28/08/2022 16:18

Yes Costco are American.

I didn't expect a 40cm by 30cm cake, feeding 48 for £15 to be gourmet. Edible, yes.

I love their mince pies though

Every year we await them 😁

imnottoofussed · 28/08/2022 16:22

I think I need to re join Coscto as I've never tried the mince pies

Electriq · 28/08/2022 16:22

I'm not a lover of sweet things, but would indulge in a slice of birthday cake, but Costco cake is absolutely vile!

CaptainBarbosa · 28/08/2022 16:24

This is the reason I always demand a caterpillar cake for my birthday and nothing else will do. I know what I'm getting 😂 I've been like this since I was 5 I'm now in my 30's.

It's now family tradition, so both me and DS will have a caterpillar cake on our birthdays. If it's big party we just buy 2 or 3 of them.

SirBarneyPlumsted · 28/08/2022 16:25

Try the Madeira cake from either Aldi or Lidl (can’t remember which), bought it as a quick extra for Dc for their party as it was short notice and I’d already made one for the actual birthday (party on different day). Absolutely terrible, I wasn’t expecting much as it was very cheap (looked quite pretty) but it was the worst shop cake I’ve ever tasted.

BlueRidge · 28/08/2022 16:25

You bought a cake like that and are wondering why it tastes shit?
I mean, you really didn't spot any clues?

spiderontheceiling · 28/08/2022 16:26

One of my friends is a brilliant baker who makes amazing cakes, bread & pastry. So I was thrilled to have a slice of her toddler's birthday cake as she'd raved about them so much. It was vile. Just artificial yuckiness. But I politely said how much I enjoyed it and so she always saved me a slice for years and I always had to come up with a reason not to eat it in front of her.

tabulahrasa · 28/08/2022 16:31

I mean obviously a cake baked by an actual person is way way better.

But I prefer Costco cake over supermarket cakes.

Hakeandling · 28/08/2022 16:35

I hate all shop bought birthday cake.
even Colin the caterpillar

cushioncovers · 28/08/2022 16:35

I recently tried one of their fresh cheesecakes after a colleague kept raving about them but it was awful, so sugary and artificial tasting. I couldn't even finish the slice.

imsanehonest · 28/08/2022 16:43

I LOVE Costco birthday cakes! 😍

Wowzel · 28/08/2022 16:44

I love those costco sheet cakes!

GetThatHelmetOn · 28/08/2022 16:48

I like the sponge but the icing is awful!

2bazookas · 28/08/2022 16:49

Shock headline; Sugar frosting IS 100% sugar.

Rutland2022 · 28/08/2022 16:50

I love a Costco cake in the same way I like other junk food. It’s absolutely rubbish but in an addictive way.

I love a homemade cake, I make an acceptable sponge. But a Costco cake is like comparing Cheese Strings and aged Gouda. I bloody love both but they are incomparable.

bruce43mydog · 28/08/2022 16:54

I had a costco birday cake, and really didn't like the taste and will not buy a birthday cake from there again. I do love costco carbonara, chilli and wedges, pizzas etc.... and I buy there lemon drizzle cake and chocolate muffins which are nice.

Starpeople · 28/08/2022 16:56

Homemade cakes are better (but this is definately dependant on who is making them!)

Cismyfatarse · 28/08/2022 16:57

We left one in the staff room at work over the 7 week school summer holiday. It had no mould and was still not dry. They are made of chemicals.
