DD had a party yesterday for her birthday and instead of getting 2 of the supermarket traybake things for £6/7 each, we ordered a Costco sheet cake thing.

OMG I have never tested anything so awful in my life. The actual sponge cake is passable. The jam - well I've never tasted anything so synthetic and un-jam like in my life. And the frosting is just 100% sugar.

But people rave about how lovely it is?😱

I'm probably going to be in the minority but I love a Costo birthday cake.

Same! Bloody love s Costco cake 😂

Rahrahrahrahannoyed · 28/08/2022 15:34

They look like the typical American cake bought at their massive supermarkets

Hobele · 28/08/2022 15:35

To be fair they do look totally gross. Their profiteroles are quite decent though.
(I hate most shop cakes anyway, they all taste like plam oil.)

Rahrahrahrahannoyed · 28/08/2022 15:35

Cakebox cakes are amazing. There is alot of frosting and extremely light sponge cake. I've tasted a few at Asian celebrations.

MugginsOverEre · 28/08/2022 15:35

The sheet cakes are nasty.

The giant double chocolate chip
Muffins however? Oh..magawd! So freaking good.

Cosycover · 28/08/2022 15:36

I love love loveeeee it

Crikeyalmighty · 28/08/2022 15:42

The only mass produced bought cakes I've ever enjoyed were M&S - and even then I'm selective and prefer something like the walnut with buttercream

TheConicalFlask · 28/08/2022 15:46

The big round cakes from Costco are amazing. The carrot cake and chocolate fudge cake are really good.

KezzabellaB · 28/08/2022 15:48

Love them. The frosting is THE best. But then I have a very sweet tooth 🤣

Hesma · 28/08/2022 15:48

Home made cakes are so much better… I never buy them, can’t stand the artificial blandness

I agree.

superram · 28/08/2022 15:51

I ordered one for my child’s first birthday. It was so sweet it made my teeth itch. Never again.

54isanopendoor · 28/08/2022 15:51

I used to buy the Chocolate Costco sheet cakes for Birthdays when the children were very little for class parties. They look fun, are easy to cut & small kids just mess around with cake usually anyway. We had a nice homemade one for home.

WilsonMilson · 28/08/2022 15:52

Agree, I love Costco generally, but their birthday cakes are one of the most synthetic things I’ve ever tasted. The best way I could describe it is food that makes you feel ‘dirty’, and not in a good way.
I’m all for a nice bit of cake made with actual butter and lovely creams and jams, but this tastes like purely plastic food with nothing remotely resembling wholesome ingredients.

Biker47 · 28/08/2022 15:52

The white birthday cakes ones are horrible, the other cakes like the Victoria sponge, red velvet, carrot, and chocolate cake are decent enough.

I second this. 😋

Rina66 · 28/08/2022 15:54

They even have their own peculiar smell! I love Costco but definitely don't buy the birthday cakes.

Shade17 · 28/08/2022 15:54

They’re disgusting shit

teezletangler · 28/08/2022 15:59

That looks like a typical American / Canadian sheet cake that we get at the grocery store here across the pond. I personally love them as a guilty pleasure, but high quality they are not. It could definitely be a full-on assault on an unsuspecting British palate! Funnily enough I can't stand British grocery store fondant covered cakes as I find them dry by comparison.

Somethingneedstochange · 28/08/2022 15:59

When my children were small supermarket birthday cakes were often pallatble. The sponge was usually quite nice. They have disabilities so still expect a birthday cake on they're birthday now they're young adults.

We have one made for the special one's but the other year's get a supermarket one and there not as nice as they used to be. I find the sponge is often dry and lacks flavour. The icing is also sickly sweet. Do they not taste test these cake's before mass producing them?

InsertPunHere · 28/08/2022 16:00

I've never heard anyone rave about Costco cakes! I thought it was a given that they were giant cakes people bought to feeds a massive crowd, and their principle ingredient was sugar.

We've bought a couple, mostly for whole-class parties for children who thinbk the more sugar the merrier.

Drivebye · 28/08/2022 16:01

Red velvet and carrot cake - lovely. The 'special' big slab birthday ones - awful but fine to give children Wink

JohnsShirt · 28/08/2022 16:03

The icing is like over sweet soft wax, bleeuurgh.

No they're, they're really not 😁

I would never insult anyone, even children by giving them substandard cake.

When DD was little I used to make a simple all in one sponge traybake and cover it with home made buttercream and smarties.

Upwiththelark76 · 28/08/2022 16:08

I love their carrot cake. Sorry not sorry
