DD had a party yesterday for her birthday and instead of getting 2 of the supermarket traybake things for £6/7 each, we ordered a Costco sheet cake thing.

OMG I have never tested anything so awful in my life. The actual sponge cake is passable. The jam - well I've never tasted anything so synthetic and un-jam like in my life. And the frosting is just 100% sugar.

But people rave about how lovely it is?😱

Oh yes their own brand Kirkland prosecco is excellent.

I think cakes are actually stunt cakes. There for the photos, not actually intended to be eaten. Haven't tried the scones or shortbread but their croissants are nice.

Yes! I was about to post something along these lines. They are display/stunt cakes so you can say there is cake.

IMO people who think the sickly sweet confections that pass for cakes at Costco have never tasted decent home baking.

I like cake, but find the Costco cakes too sweet and artificial tasting.

I don't expect shop bought cakes to taste like homemade. But there are decent shop bought cakes which are a good alternative to homemade when catering for a large event.

The Costco sheet cake is not one of them.

I was very underwhelmed when I first tried one, after hearing everyone rave about them. Very disappointing. I wouldn't have it again.

WeAreTheHeroes · 28/08/2022 14:54

Oh yes - a colleague once brought one in when she had a big birthday. It was three quarters disgusting "buttercream" and I remember there was a lot leftover.

Haudyourwheesht · 28/08/2022 14:55

I think a lot of shop bought birthday cakes are a bit like that though. We got a Tesco one for DD's party and I found it sweet and artificial-y. I generally bake my own but any time I'd had them before they never used to be like that.

imnottoofussed · 28/08/2022 14:57

Well I have to say I like them. Especially the icing bit round the edges Cake

I've not really found a cake I wouldn't finish a slice of.

And yes I have tasted home made cakes and can tell the difference. Nobody said they thought it was better than home made.

RampantIvy · 28/08/2022 14:57

If I was going to buy cake I would get one from M and S or the Co-op, but usually I bake my own.

Bubblebubblebah · 28/08/2022 14:58

I think there is difference between their standard cakes (😍) and the birthday ones. I love their red velvet

WhereAreMyAirpods · 28/08/2022 15:00

It's also cheaper than homemade. £15 for a cake weighing about 4kg. You'd need a dozen eggs, 500g butter, couple of bags of flour... not cheap.

I have only tasted their standard cakes, including carrot cake and red velvet, and they are just too sweet and artificial tasting for me.

RaRaRaspoutine · 28/08/2022 15:02

Costco carrot cake is of the devil. Totally utterly disgusting and haven’t tried any other of their cakes since.

TheNinny · 28/08/2022 15:03

Love them 😄though haven’t had one for years so may have changed…

EkinWho · 28/08/2022 15:04

Ugh, my in-laws always buy them for birthdays and expect everyone to ooh and aah. They're rank.

lap90 · 28/08/2022 15:04

There are many great things of great quality at Costco but those cakes are a hard pass for me and i haven't even tried them 🤣

pd339 · 28/08/2022 15:07

Mass produced cheap food in "poor quality sugar filled rubbish" shocker! Who would have thought!

Shelby1981 · 28/08/2022 15:15

Try the chocolate version....I think it's lovely 🤷🏻‍♀️

LondonQueen · 28/08/2022 15:16

I've never seen anyone rave about their cakes tbf. I made my own during lockdown and it was really good, ingredient's aren't expensive.

SirChenjins · 28/08/2022 15:17

I love a Costco cake! Great that you don’t like them, that means more for the rest of us 😋

Starpeople · 28/08/2022 15:21

'I disagree that it's all low quality We have found their mince, chicken, salmon etc brilliant. DS loves their big pot of hummus. No issues or complaints about the trays of danish pastries, part baked baguettes, wraps or any of the other stuff we've bought.'

Their croissants and cookies are also amazing!

This ^

janj2301 · 28/08/2022 15:23

Slightly off piste. When my daughter was at boarding school and we lived by the first Costco in UK. We'd regularly take 20 of their pizzas back to school and they just fit in the catering ovens, they were incredibly popluar we'd get them for school fetes/events.

Starpeople · 28/08/2022 15:25

Their cakes are no worse than Asda, m&s or any other mass produced chain, all dry, artificial and tastless. Making from scratch is always the best. I used to love Costco frosting and especially the cake corners years ago (too much of a sugar overload these days though!) Their cakes have always been artificial but have changed through the years as well and seem dry and not as nice now. I would have thought most people to.be honest buying a cake from a chain, would expect an artificial taste!

AnyFucker · 28/08/2022 15:28

I love their mince pies though

Starpeople · 28/08/2022 15:29

I would have thought most people buying from a chain would expect an artificial taste. You're hardly going to get a real high quality product unless making yourself or buying from a high quality baker (again a rare find).

LoveBugBride · 28/08/2022 15:33

I love Costco cake the icing is so sweet and sugary. I do have a sweet tooth though.

Yes, I was going to say that we didn't like the vanilla one but I do like the chocolate one.
