DD had a party yesterday for her birthday and instead of getting 2 of the supermarket traybake things for £6/7 each, we ordered a Costco sheet cake thing.

OMG I have never tested anything so awful in my life. The actual sponge cake is passable. The jam - well I've never tasted anything so synthetic and un-jam like in my life. And the frosting is just 100% sugar.

But people rave about how lovely it is?😱

They are how i imagine American birthday cakes to taste. The sponge is weird as it's both dense but actually quite light to eat and the whole thing is super sweet. I don't hate it tbh.

We left one in the staff room at work over the 7 week school summer holiday. It had no mould and was still not dry. They are made of chemicals.

😳That's incredible!!!!!

BarbaraofSeville · 28/08/2022 17:10

I can't find an image of the ingredients list for the rectangular cake but here it is for a similar one.

Even if you can't read it, it's certain that there's a lot more in there than sugar, flour, eggs, butter and some basic colours and flavourings.

Most supermarket-bought cake is awful. It's surely not that surprising that cheap, crappy ingredients make cheap, crappy cake!

I'm probably going to be in the minority but I love a Costo birthday cake.

Me too 😅

jimmyhill · 28/08/2022 17:20

At 30p a portion you're lucky they're even safe for human consumption

Murphs1 · 28/08/2022 17:21

I also love Costco cake 😁

Murphs1 · 28/08/2022 17:21

All of them 😂

I’ve been unable to find a current ingredients list online but when we used to get them at work they definitely used hydrogenated fat in the frosting. I’ve not touched them since I saw that.

maddening · 28/08/2022 17:27

I recently joined costco for the petrol and thought the food looks good, but we haven't had a chance to indulge yet. The stores are huge!

SaharaSahara · 28/08/2022 17:29

This thread just made me realise how much I miss Costco cake and how it’s been so long since I’ve had one ☹️ Love them!

WhereAreMyAirpods · 28/08/2022 17:32

Every so often there's a "what's good at Costco" thread which might give you ideas. We generally buy the basics - when I was there picking up the (disgusting) sheet cake I also got 3 packs of 8 tortilla wraps for £2.19 (3 separate packs joined together) which is cheaper than the supermarket and the wraps are nice. When DC were small we used the own brand nappies which were very good. They quite often have random bargains in the clothing section, the toys at Christmas are good. And their diesel is the cheapest anywhere - currently at 170.7 in Glasgow where everywhere else is at the 180 mark.

One thing I learned the hard way was that branded stuff isn't necessarily cheaper - things like bottles and cans of Coca-Cola, cleaning products, teabags - supermarkets often have deals which mean they are cheaper than Costco. Their own brand wine is decent.

Exactly this!

NameChangeLifeChange · 28/08/2022 18:01

They are awful. All my in laws shop in Costco a ridiculous amount and they are a staple at parties- I completely understand re: budget as they are so cheap so would never judge but honestly they make my teeth feel itchy with the sugar! Give me a Colin any day.

MondayMoan · 28/08/2022 18:03

The chocolate one is better than the vanilla apparently. I don't like the vanilla icing at all.

Same!!!

FancyFelix · 28/08/2022 18:15

They are horrible. I buy them for kids parties as they are so cheap but wouldn't eat them.

They are far cheaper than homemade

Nomorescreentime · 28/08/2022 18:16

Oh I LOVE the vanilla ones. I know how awful they are but they are one of my fave junk things to have.

FancyFelix · 28/08/2022 18:17

I agree, branded not always cheaper but their own brand Kirkland stuff has some good items. We buy wine, cheese, laundry powder, yoghurts, and meat. The towels are fab. Huge, soft and cheap!

Angelicapickles1 · 28/08/2022 18:21

My DH loves the huge chocolate fudge cake from there.

But I agree the icing on the white sponge cake is very sweet but most people I know loves it

Nekomata · 28/08/2022 18:23

Maybe I was unlucky but I had a Colin the Caterpillar cake for DS once and was completely underwhelmed. It was just a dry swiss roll cake.

Sistanotcista · 28/08/2022 18:24

sqirrelfriends · 28/08/2022 14:39

Their cakes are rank IMO. There was someone at my old work that RAVED about them and would bring one in quite often. I dont understand it. Same lady thought Hersheys kisses were lovely and I think they taste of vomit so I’m putting it down to dodgy tastebuds.

Totally agree with you about Hershey’s chocolate tasting like vomit. But strangely, it is beloved by many Americans. I presume it is the same with Costco cakes - cultural differences.

MikeWozniaksMoustache · 28/08/2022 18:44

Just let people like things ffs. Yes they’re not as good as home baking, yes they’re processed, but sometimes people just want exactly that. Unadulterated junk.

IMO people who think the sickly sweet confections that pass for cakes at Costco have never tasted decent home baking.
Fabulous home baking in my family. Sometimes I just want to stick my face into a cheap sweet sheet cake. Fuck off with your pretension.

😂This sums up the thread perfectly, let them eat cake!
