To not want to eat halal meat?

Most restaurants serve it now, especially my favourite which is Indian food. Finding it more and more difficult to find somewhere that doesn't?

Clearly you haven't been in a slaughterhouse. Most definitely prestunning is less cruel than not.

An animal is killed regardless, so it is not less cruel.

Junebughustle · 28/08/2022 15:49

What a load of racism dressed up as concern for animal welfare. To the anti-halal brigade not being able to engage with the comments pointing out the hypocrisy of this argument - call yourselves what you are, racist.

What is racist about wanting all animals, kosher and halal, to be pre-stunned. Even Muslim religious leaders approve of pre-stunning.

eomeoni · 28/08/2022 15:52

Then don’t eat Halal meat.

No one is shoving it down you. It’s your choice.

EmotionalBruises · 28/08/2022 15:51

Of course some methods of death are more cruel than others. Even Muslim religious leaders agree with that.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting stats on it.

Pava22 " Muslims have been dredged through the mud by the media. The Jewish community have quite a large community especially high up in the media and other top industries. So they won't be mentioned as much."

I though we were trying to avoid racism in this discussion?

The Jewish community is actually small - less than one-tenth of the Muslim community in fact.

"high up in the media and other top industries. So they won't be mentioned as much" - this is plain anti-semitic stereotype/trope/conspiracy theory

Because when someone starts this thread every 6 months or so it’s never a concern about kosher meat or animal welfare it’s always that they don’t want to eat halal.

weirddreams · 28/08/2022 15:57

I'm a meat buyer for a big processor.

You need to understand the difference between the types of halal meat. Most halal meat in the UK is stunned prior to slaughter, and therefore the slaughter process is the same as non-halal meat aside from the religious prayer that is said at the moment of slaughter. Some Muslims will argue that this is not truly halal.

There is a smaller subset of unstunned halal meat (as pushed by the Halal Monitoring Committee). The animal is fully conscious at the moment of slaughter. Meat from these plants is always terrible, the chicken will always be B-grade as the birds flail and flap as they die resulting in bruises and broken bones.

I happily eat stunned halal meat (and am not a Muslim) but would never eat unstunned.

nameoftheday · 28/08/2022 15:49

SleepDream "you do not hear much people saying Jewish people have vile slaughter practices like Muslims" Actually the EU basically said that.

Libre agree about milk production

The irony of that is that most of halal meat is actually stunned. Whereas none of kosher meat is. Islamic religious leaders approve of pre-stunning. Jewish religious leaders do not. But somehow people think criticism of a religious practice is an attack on a religion which is just wrong. If the Christian church announced everyone had to sacrifice a dog once a year, I'd be vociferously against that too.

70billionthnamechange · 28/08/2022 16:02

Double standards.

I don't know anyone else's motivations and neither do you, but I do know that non stunning is worse for animals regardless of the religion involved. I've worked in a slaughterhouse. I object to being labelled as a racist for wanting the practice to be made illegal.

Pava22 · 28/08/2022 16:05

@MarshaMelrose because a lot of farms and slaughter houses don't look after the animals well even though they should. Whereas halal and kosher have to be looked after well otherwise they wouldn't be halal. And as those doing a lot of the looking after are religious the chances of high welfare are a lot greater

Pava22 · 28/08/2022 16:07

@nameoftheday well no not really. If a lot of top industries where run by Muslims I would say the same. You aren't going to speak against your own religion

I didn't say Jewish people are bad.... I have a lot of Jewish friends who would agree

Where are these farms? And how do you know it is a lot?
If anyone is thinking of reducing their meat consumption- start by avoiding chicken . They have the worse life of any farm animal unless they are wandering around a farmyard completely free range Cattle and sheep have the best life.

nameoftheday · 28/08/2022 16:18

Not to derail - but which top industries? Manufacturing? No. Car plants? No. Food production? No. General retail? No. Construction? No.
I'd be surprised if your Jewish friends agree with you that Jews in the UK run "a lot of top industries".

Back to meat, if there's any appetite remaining . . .

Oh no they don't. Standard indoor pigs have by far the worst life. Especially the sows who spend the majority of their miserable lives in farrowing crates where they can just about stand up but can't take a step forward, backwards or turn around. It's barbaric. Then the piglets are packed into pens for their entire lives. Before being sent to abattoirs to be 'stunned' which is in fact a painful, slow suffocation by CO2 gas. If you want to avoid a meat on animal welfare grounds, I'd make it pork.

Thundercats77 · 28/08/2022 16:22

Then don't eat it?
Or do what many Muslims do when a restaurant serves non halal meat, have the vegetarian options.

nameoftheday · 28/08/2022 16:25

StepAway "If you want to avoid a meat on animal welfare grounds, I'd make it pork."

Not to be flippant, but that's one (other) thing in favour of halal or kosher

EmotionalBruises · 28/08/2022 16:27

Anyway, OP, you haven't explained why you don't want to eat Halal meat, but there are usually meat-free options in Indian restaurants. So, you don't have to stop going out to eat if you want to eat Indian food in a restaurant.

BerryBerryBerryBerry · 28/08/2022 16:30

StepAwayFromGoogling · 28/08/2022 15:21

It's my job. I know it. How much time do you spend in abattoirs if you don't mind me asking?

Some albeit years ago. Nobody ever left school aspiring to do that. The moronic sub humans who enjoy bullying animals will always reign. If you want to eat meat hushed to death by pink unicorns, eat a carrot. If you genuinely work in an abbotoir you deserve no respect. Presumably you are a farmer who enjoys the financial spoils of sending your assets to their death for money. Nobody who cares for life would do that.

The op won’t be coming back. They have lit the blue touch paper and have retired to a safe distance.

See it’s never, ‘I don’t agree with the way pigs are treated so I won’t eat pork’. It’s always ‘I don’t agree with Halal for some unspecified reason’.

Willowthewispy · 28/08/2022 16:38

I've been thinking about going vegetarian for some time now. This thread has just made up my mind.
