Most restaurants serve it now, especially my favourite which is Indian food. Finding it more and more difficult to find somewhere that doesn't?

Just saying that Muslims aren't a race, they consist of many different races. The term isIslamophobic.

Well fine then. It’s islamophobic then. It doesn’t make it any less distasteful.

mumboss1984 · 28/08/2022 23:29

I am also not Islamophobic, just to clarify

thefamilyupstairs · 29/08/2022 00:22

No @PriamFarrl it really doesn't.

The vast majority of new zealand lamb in uk supermarkets is halal. (Waitrose, Tesco, Morrisons, coop etc)
If you insist on eating a slaughtered animal, halal is generally more reliably humane.
That would be more important to me...

It might be halal but it is definitely prestunned. It's illegal not to pre-stun in NZ.

Mamai90 · 29/08/2022 02:32

Go vegetarian!

Funny how many meat-eating animal rights activists emerge at the H-word 😂

Pigs jn the Uk are slaughtered via anal electrocution and submersion in boiling water. I don’t see anyone swearing off sausages…

@MightyFishwife how do you know how pigs are slaughtered? Can you link to any sources on this?

Ok. So can you please clearly tell me what it is about Halal slaughter that you don’t like as compared to regular slaughter. As has been established on this thread the majority of halal meat is stunned before it’s killed. So what exactly is it?

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/08/2022 11:32

MarshaMelrose · 28/08/2022 18:49

Are you calling me a racist for saying that prestunning is more humane? Get over yourself with your dog whistles. You clearly know nothing. 😏

No, I'm saying this thread is Dog Whistle racism.

@StepAwayFromGoogling I just wanted to thank you for posting on this thread, despite all the negative comments you've received. Reading your thoughts and experiences here is as close as many of us will get to understand the truth of what goes on in a UK slaughterhouse. I am incredibly relieved to hear from you that in the UK pre-stunning is the law and that the law overrides religious custom. Good sense prevails.
I too have been very uncomfortable at the growing prevalence of what I thought of as unstunned Halal meat in schools, for example. I am much, much happier to hear that anything slaughtered here will have been stunned first. If that is the case, then prayers and any higher welfare standards associated with Halal are clearly not negatives.
I guess that anything marketed as Kosher in the supermarkets here will have been slaughtered elsewhere and not stunned so that it can be marketed as Kosher. I'll continue to avoid those products as before.

I can't figure out if you're being sarcastic or just haven't understood. So, out of manners, I'll assume the second.

All animals must be pre stunned except in certain circumstances, one of which is for religious reasons. So kosher and halal meat does not have to be pre stunned.

Kosher meat is NEVER pre stunned.

Halal meat can be pre stunned - about 60% is and 40% isn't.

NZ has a law that all animals must be pre stunned, regardless of religions.

FarmGirl78 · 29/08/2022 16:35

I researched this once when a racist "but I've got a friend at work with brown skin so I'm not really racist" aquaintence decided Halal was evil blah blah blah and the amount of places that serve halal meat was MASSIVE. I gathered info from so many different sources and compiled my own whopping long list. Iceland, M&S, MacDonald Hotel chain, Wetherspoons, the list was incredible, and she was FUMING when she realised the amount of places she wouldn't be able to eat any more. Sadly I've lost the list otherwise I'd post it here.

MarshaMelrose · 29/08/2022 16:49

@FarmGirl78
There's nothing racist about believing that all animals, regardless of religion, should be pre stunned because it's more humane.

And I'm not going through your list, but I know that macdonalds in the uk do not serve halal meat and even their vegetarian options are not suitable for Muslims because they use pork grease. (As a veggie, that sounds yuk!)

IAMNOTTHEONE2022 · 29/08/2022 16:54

There is no humane way to kill an animal for your consumption. You sound ridiculous! . You cannot take the higher ground in this scenario, no matter how hard you try.

How abiut stopping eating meat, if it bothers you so much?! Or does is not quite bother you enough..

That's not true. All of their veggie stuff is certified vegan.

MarshaMelrose · 29/08/2022 17:04

@Carpy88999
Yes, sorry, you're right. The pork grease was a claim made that was proven to be wrong.

MarshaMelrose · 29/08/2022 17:09

There is no humane way to kill an animal for your consumption.

There are ways that are more humane than others, though. If the meat industry is going to continue, and I can't see it stopping, shouldn't we enforce the most humane methods we can? Although that doesn't mean that I believe that even if pre stunning was made obligatory for all animals, that should be then end of improvements. But it's a start.

notafraidofthebigbadwolf · 29/08/2022 17:21

@MarshaMelrose Halal meat can be pre stunned - about 60% is and 40% isn't.
Oh dear, my mistake then, I've just looked up what the RSPCA say and according to them, 87% of animals slaughtered in the UK for Halal are prestunned. The Gov.uk website concurs with you that there is a get out from the law for religious slaughter.
87% prestunned is not good enough for me, I will continue to avoid Halal along with Kosher.
New Zealand is such a great country...

antelopevalley · 29/08/2022 17:29

The other 13% will be the meat sold in Halal butchers. Just avoid these and you will be fine.

No. It was that the fries were cooked in beef fat, in America. It has never been the case in the U.K., it is still the case in the USA. www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/about-our-food/nutrition-calculator.html

MarshaMelrose · 29/08/2022 18:45

I did apologise earlier on for my misinformation but thank you for clarifying. @PriamFarrl.
I think the pork grease claim was made in the uk and sounds like it was made to intimidate Muslims away from eating at McDs - obvs that's my assumption, I don't know. But the FullFact website also confirms that it's not true.

MarshaMelrose · 29/08/2022 18:47

@notafraidofthebigbadwolf
I think its different figures for different years. The number of animals being prestunned went up and then down again.
