To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

The poster, with a very large following, is saying a size 18 isn't really plus size by much, and that 'most people (in the UK), are above a Size 16?

Really? I don't know that many people above a size 16. I really don't. I know lots and lots of size 12/14 and thought that was about average? It's usually the first sizes to sell out

I don't believe that woman is a size 14...

Sure but I don’t believe the model is a size 18! This woman is a size 14 according to the article in the sun where she gives her weight and size

PeloAddict · 23/08/2022 21:04

I'm a 16-18 and about 17 stone in this pic
Yes I'm fat, I don't need people to tell me. Not huge however, people aren't gasping at me walking down the street

Anonymouseposter · 23/08/2022 21:05

The size 14 woman is a completely different build and shape than the size 16-18 model, as I said above, people have different heights, builds etc.

Honestly she could well be a size 14 if she is 5'0" with a tiny frame.

Watapalava · 23/08/2022 21:08

If a person is overweight it doesn’t matter if a size 16 is average

anything about a 12 would be heavy in almost all women

14/16 may be average but it’s still plus size as it’s over weight

She is 5ft4, weighs 12st 8lbs and wears a dress size 14. Her BMI is 32.7.

Although frankly now I’ve seen @PeloAddict photo I have to backtrack - you don’t look anything above a size 12 I don’t understand how you’re a 16-18 at all

I am 11 stone ish, and oddly I look larger than you. Probably because it's all gone to my tummy like most menopausal women. You are very proportionate.

PeloAddict · 23/08/2022 21:11

@Ithinkitsenoughnow I'm smaller on the bottom as I'm top heavy but usually 18 top, 16-18 bottom
At 15 stone I'm a size 14-16. I genuinely have been told by the doctor to get on the scales again as they must be broken

CecilyP · 23/08/2022 21:13

RhubarbMoon · 23/08/2022 17:35

And if a size 8 is now 40 inches hip,

I have hips this size and I'm a 14.

Makes more sense to me. I’m 44 in hips and a 16 in jeans so 40 in is more like a 12. Definitely not an 8!

CecilyP · 23/08/2022 21:25

VestaTilley · 23/08/2022 19:51

It’s morbidly obese, and that influencer is kidding herself.

The pendulum has rightly swung away from size 00 models, but far too far in the other direction. Being that fat isn’t ok - it’s life threatening.

You don’t know what morbidly obese means, do you? It means a BMI of 40 and definitely someone who would stand out in a crowd. When I started wearing size 18, I was still in the ‘overweight’ category, though now my BMI is about 30.

She’s not huge but she looks larger than me at a 16/18!. I have the odd item that actually fits in a size 14 but it would be ridiculous to say I was a 14!

Teateaandmoretea · 23/08/2022 21:36

I would have to be 15 stone to be obese. I am a ‘starting with a 14 in most shops’ at about 12 stone which is a bmi of 24.5.

I doubt I’d be able to get into an 18 at 15 stone but tbf I’ve never been 15 stone.

Using clothes size as a proxy for health is truly bonkers.

Teateaandmoretea · 23/08/2022 21:38

20 stone for morbidly obese. I can say with some certainty the only way I’d get into an 18 would be to sew two together.

CecilyP · 23/08/2022 21:42

Same height and weight as me and definitely looks fatter? I did it hard to believe she can squeeze into a 14!

BarbaraofSeville · 23/08/2022 21:50

She's probably a US size 14 aka a size 18.

I'm about that weight, a (UK) 14/16 but am 5'7 and a completely different shape. My waist is much smaller and my arms a lot slimmer, but my hips and arse bigger.

You must have a similar giant skeleton to me Grin You look lovely and definitely don't stand out. Most women I see in my town are bigger than you.

That woman is an apple. @PeloAddict is an hour glass. It makes all the difference both in people's perception of how fat a woman looks, as being fat it is very much associated with how large the mid section appears, and how much of a health risk their weight is. The woman in the picture is also revealing her entire body. Nothing is minimised or disguised by clothes. A lot of women who wouldn't be thought OW fully dressed look much larger in swimwear.

anon666 · 23/08/2022 22:19

Anyway dress size depends on not only height/weight but also proportionate size of boobs/hips.

If we're going to offend people by telling them sanctimoniously that they're fat, let's at least get the right people.

Dress size is not the right measure, although to be fair your likelihood of being morbidly obese and a size 8 is pretty low.

Morbidly obese, by the way, is like a BMI of 40. It really is quite hard to get to that. I suspect its well into the 20s for most people - 26/28 minimum.

Lem0ndrizzl3 · 23/08/2022 23:04

It is clear that people are confusing the term "plus size" with obesity.

Plus size refers to clothing. Clothing is considered plus sized when it is "extended sizing" . That means that it isn't the general sizes you would find in most stores. Most stores used to only go to a UK size 14 or 16, however size 18 is now usually included in the standard ranges. This isn't always the case but seems to be more common than not. Plus size would be anything additional to this - usually only found online or its own tiny, limited section of the shop. This is generally 20-24, but sometimes going as far as size 36+.

As size 18 isn't always included in standard sizing, yes it could be considered plus size. However as it's generally included now, I agree with the "only just" point of view.

Obesity is a different topic entirely. People of the same height and weight can be different sizes purely due to how their body distributes fat. Judging other peoples health based on their clothing size is ridiculous and harmful. Size does not equal health. Being a size 22 does not necessarily mean that somebody is unhealthy and being a size 10 doesn't necessarily mean that somebody is healthy. The only person who should be making a judgement on someone's health is their doctor.

She is NOT a size 14 FFS. 18-20 at least. I don't care what the article in THE SUN claims (LOL as if anything in that shitrag would, be true!) But yeah, no matter what the article says, she is not a size 14.

Emmelina · 23/08/2022 23:24

Taller people may carry it better I guess, but it’s definitely a plus size.
mom only 5’. I’m certain you’d be able to roll me like a barrel :)

Emmelina · 23/08/2022 23:24

I’m. Thanks phone.

Sandcastlesinthesky · 23/08/2022 23:27

It’s definitely plus size no matter what your height is. I’m a 14 at 5ft 10. If I was a 16/ 18 I’d look big. I would say 16 is probably the average. I’ve noticed that’s the size that never seems to be on the racks so must sell quickest

Greentree6455 · 23/08/2022 23:32

Wait a minute. Are posters really attaching photos of women from newspapers and calling them huge! You really do have to be an arsehole to think this is okay!
