To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

sanddownthatwall · 22/08/2022 00:09

The poster, with a very large following, is saying a size 18 isn't really plus size by much, and that 'most people (in the UK), are above a Size 16?

Really? I don't know that many people above a size 16. I really don't. I know lots and lots of size 12/14 and thought that was about average? It's usually the first sizes to sell out

Mamato3boysand2dogs · 24/08/2022 22:23

Who cares?

What irritates me is this new fad of glamourising being overweight! It's 'curvy, thick, womanly, etc etc'.

No it isn't, it's really unhealthy! everywhere i go these days all i see is overweight, out of shape people.

Since when did this become something to aspire to??

Instagram is full of women celebrating how overweight they are, showing what they eat in a day etc. Why are they proud that they are abusing their bodies and likely shaving a good few years off their lives??

Bonkers.

mamabear715 · 24/08/2022 22:24

Nearly at page 40, will it stop soon?

mamabear715 · 24/08/2022 22:24

This thread is an utter disgrace. :-(

I don't think size 8 is the only point you could have had healthy BMI. That's why BMI gives such big ranges.

And again...it depends on body shape and height. At 10 Stone 10 my BMI was OW. My 28 inch waist meant I could fit into a size 10. At mid point healthy BMI I need a size 6/8.
I'd also agree with how very little a woman may be able to eat to stay a healthy weight. At 53 and 5' 4" with 'light excercise' I only need 1600 calories a day according to the calculator. For a shorter woman, one who has to be sedentary or someone whose metabolism is slow for some reason, it's obviously even lower. Unless you are very restrictive, eat mainly veg, avoid calorie dense foods like meat and dairy, avoid treats and alcohol, it's very very difficult without going hungry and it's understandable that neither of those options is attractive.

@Justine878 Thank you! It's been so cruel. xx

Justine878 · 24/08/2022 22:35

Sorry , posted too soon 😀, such a shame to waste a post as well! It will stop soon. Maybe next time we can leave all the judgemental people on here by themselves, maybe they will take each other out. I always like listening to "shake it off", after coming off these threads! probably easier just to stay off them in the first place!

Justine878 · 24/08/2022 22:37

'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off (hoo-hoo-hoo)

It's like she's been on mumsnet!

heshehahahehe · 24/08/2022 22:39

I'm not sure why people who are overweight and bringing things in that are calorific and bad for them aren't judged like a smoker or an alcoholic.

I have a work colleague who brings in cheese and meat sandwiches, coke, crisps, chocolate. Cake for a snack! She's a size 16. She should be frowned upon and I hope she doesn't feel too comfortable eating like that when we've all got simple soups, healthy wraps, salads.

I hope people don't. There needs to be some balance to the stupidity and spite on here. Its a shame when one side of a debate is silenced because the other can't refrain from insults and personal attacks.

Justine878 · 24/08/2022 22:41

Gosh, Cheese and meat sandwiches, coke AND cake. Sounds like my kind of woman!

I hear you, my ideal is just the idea that they are just shouting into nothing though. If no one reads, if no one else comments.... It's like the tree falling in the forest. Does it make a sound? it's a daft idea I know, won't work in reality. I'm just rambling... I will stop now 😁

You sound like someone neck deep in diet culture.

I eat what I want, when I want. I eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m full. If my body asks for chocolate or an evil “‘meat and cheese sandwich” then I’ll happily oblige, I trust that it knows what it needs and it’s asking for a reason. If it wants vegetables, it gets those too, all the colours of the rainbow. My favourite work sandwich at the moment is full fat Philadelphia with loads of crinkle cut pickled beetroot piled into it, usually on a bagel thin. Yum. Other days it’s a wodge of mortadella with Philly and lashings of mustard on focaccia. I might even add myself a layer of spinach to add some iron to my protein and fat.

Ultimately, food has no moral value or virtue. It’s just a means of getting energy into your body. Maybe the food is the only nice thing in her day when she has to spend it with people like you and your “simple soup”.

Mamato3boysand2dogs · 24/08/2022 23:23

We can never have a balanced chat about weight because every overweight person on the thread will take offence and say they are being attacked when people are just pointing out medically proven FACTS.

Being fat isn't good, no matter the whole jolly "my kind of woman, lets stuff our faces and do what we want coz we dont care!" Brigade. They do care. Just easier to team up with other unhealthy people and glamorise being overweight than deal with it and do something about it.

Why SHOULD the thread stop?? Its healthy discussion and an issue that has bugged me for a long time.

Mamato3boysand2dogs · 24/08/2022 23:27

Also... every poster who mentions their healthy, balanced food choices on here will be mocked. Thats is you @ZealAndArdour with your snipey simple soup remark.

Why is soup mocked but a meat sandwich and full fat coke applauded ???

User45446 · 24/08/2022 23:28

@Mamato3boysand2dogs

You sound stressed, stress can be really bad for your health.

Mumsnet isn't the place for medical advice. I was on a thread yesterday where that was very clear.

Mamato3boysand2dogs · 24/08/2022 23:31

@User45446

Yes I know stress is bad for my health. So is eating a load of shit every day then moaning I'm fat, but we all have our faults.

At least i don't dress my faults up to be something they are definitely not.

Do you have massive salads too?

Stravaig · 24/08/2022 23:33

I've read all the way through just in time for the thread to close!

Big appreciation to those who have made informed, thoughtful, respectful contributions. I've been impressed by how measured and patient the central strand of discussion has been.

Being overweight or obese is harmful to the individual, the family, the community, to society as a whole. It is the concern of all of us, and the conversation must not be restricted or shut down by those who are defensive or in denial.

It is NOT a 'healthy discussion.' It's a fat bashing thread, and you bloody well know it.

User45446 · 24/08/2022 23:34

@Mamato3boysand2dogs

People who are overweight should work out what is right for them, I don't believe a space where they are mocked and judged is that place. If mumsnet could have a decent thread about it I would be there in a shot. I am interested in being healthy. I have been polite, I would appreciate the same in return.

Mamato3boysand2dogs · 24/08/2022 23:41

I have been polite too. Most people have?

No one should be rude about overweight people of course. I don't "bloody well know" any such thing @WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps so don't assune to tell me what i know.

My opinion is that cold hard medical facts about weight, metabolisn etc can't be denied. Even on mumsnet.

User45446 · 24/08/2022 23:45

@Mamato3boysand2dogs

You said "So is eating a load of shit every day then moaning I'm fat," on a thread about obesity. That is not polite, and I will be honest, you seem quite angry about this. It's a forum that people are reading to get informed, not get stressed.

The poster I was responding to made the comment about simple soup and sandwiches being somehow superior to her colleagues lunch.

If you want it look back over the pictures on the thread you’ll see I’m in significantly better shape than the woman calling for the public humiliation of her poor colleague for having the brass neck to eat cake at work, so something must be going right with my approach which is to eat mindfully and intuitively, listening to my hunger and satiety cues, from the full complement of food groups.

I didn’t applaud her colleague, I just think it says far more about the PP and her disordered attitude to food/bodies, that she’s sat here in the evenings after work ridiculing some poor woman, unable to defend herself.

The vilification of a “meat sandwich” is ludicrous and lacking in any credibility.
