To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

The poster, with a very large following, is saying a size 18 isn't really plus size by much, and that 'most people (in the UK), are above a Size 16?

Really? I don't know that many people above a size 16. I really don't. I know lots and lots of size 12/14 and thought that was about average? It's usually the first sizes to sell out

Huge? Really?
Some people love to be an arsehole by trying make themselves feel better by humiliating others. A Huge Arsehole.

But it’s not about humiliating people: that’s projecting wildly. It’s about being honest about what clothes sizes really mean/ what being fat really is.

RhubarbMoon · 23/08/2022 19:04

All I can say is when I was a size 6 10 years ago I was underweight and having treatment for anorexia. Now at a size 14 I am slightly overweight.

So I do wonder how many people back when a size 6 was a "true" vintage size 6 were just underweight.

BmI calculator is a way to encourage eating disorders.

No it’s not. It’s just height/weight ratio; the taller you are the heavier you can be without being overweight. It’s just a guide and there are very few female outliers.

Ciela · 23/08/2022 19:13

I am not delusional about my size I am morbidly obese at 160cm tall and a size 24. I bought myself some new jeans with my birthday money and I managed to get them on with ease, No lying on the bed and straining to get them done up. When you are enormous sometimes it’s little victories. I used to weigh almost 22 stone and now I weigh just under 20.

And if a size 8 is now 40 inches hip,

I have hips this size and I'm a 14.

The variations between what size women need and their respective measurements depend on body shape, and where we need that particular garment to fit. Most women are not one size all over. I have a 13 inch difference between my waist and hips, which would mean on measurements alone I'm both a size 6 and a size 12. In reality this just means I wear the size that fits my waist in stretchy material or a larger size with a belt. Unless you're rectangle shaped with the manufacturers standard bust, hip, waist differential I don't know how anyone can say they are this size or that.

Yes but where you store fat matters and will give you a bad idea about how unhealthy you are. Some women do have a relatively slim and healthy sized waist, but have very big boobs and big bums/thick thighs, BMI doesn't take into consideration where your fat is distributed, I'd also imaging things like BBLs and implants can skew this too.

It's massive. Very fat. No way around it.

Maybe not the case 30 years ago, before mass vanity sizing, but definitely now. I've stayed the same size more or less since I was 18 and began life as a solid 12. Now most of my clothes are an 8 or 10. I'm 5'9'' and I'm not skinny at all below the waist. I can't imagine that anyone who isn't a) very muscular or b) very tall could be more than a size 12 and have a healthy BMI,

Size 18, 'massive and VERY FAT!' PMSL. Good old mumsnet! 😂 Never fails to deliver!

I disagree with this. It is huge. We just don’t see it as such because it’s been normalised.

Oh get a grip FFS! 😂

It really isn’t! I have taken a 16 or 18 for years depending on the style (and sometimes even the colour in the same style) and though definitely overweight, people would insist I wasn’t. I’m only average height but a tall woman definitely wouldn’t be huge.

Well of course people will insist you aren’t because it’s polite. I’ve lied like that to overweight friends and my friends have done the same to me when I’ve been fat

PeloAddict · 23/08/2022 19:50

I mean I'm not saying it's not overweight but it's not huge by my measure
For huge I think, struggling to get up and down off the floor, unable to run, out of breath walking up stairs, obviously much bigger than the average person you see, visible stomach overhang, issues with anaesthetic, needs a specialist bed/ambulance

I've just picked this off Google, a plus size model around the same size as me 16-18, and I wouldn't think the majority of people would say she's huge

To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'
VestaTilley · 23/08/2022 19:51

It’s morbidly obese, and that influencer is kidding herself.

The pendulum has rightly swung away from size 00 models, but far too far in the other direction. Being that fat isn’t ok - it’s life threatening.

She looks stunning, but also overweight. The 2 aren't mutually exclusive, plenty of people who are overweight are attractive- that doesn't negate the health risks though. And yes they do affect everyone on a societal level.

PeloAddict · 23/08/2022 20:03

@Cheeriyo yes, of course
What I'm saying is she isn't HUGE AND ENORMOUS like people seem to be falling over themselves to say
We aren't all 5ft2 and petite, I'm 5ft 10 with size 8 feet, giant hands and shoulders. Yes, I'm overweight but I will never be a size 8-10

Neither is it life threatening on me. Of course on someone 5ft 2, yes a size 18 might be. Not that it means anything as I can wear anything from a 14 to a 20 depending on where from!

I can generally tell the difference between flattery and genuine surprise!

CecilyP · 23/08/2022 20:13

And if a size 8 is now 40 inches hip, what’s a size 20? Last time I was a size 8, my hips were 26 inches.

Were you a child?

She is overweight but not huge, which is why I don't get all the "size 18 is huge", has huge lost its meaning? She's a big girl, she's curvy, overweight, not huge.

Also incrediblyyyy sexy and attractive

CecilyP · 23/08/2022 20:25

I disagree with this. It is huge. We just don’t see it as such because it’s been normalised.

But it is normal; it’s large but pretty common. How do you cope with seeing people much larger than a size 18?

Bubblebubblebah · 23/08/2022 20:26

And a with other models sizes, not particularly looking like most 18 from my experience. Of course they will pick certain nice shape😁 (not like me lol. Be warned, hourglass going to 22 is NOT keeping as hourglass🙈) though I think she is 16.

Anonymouseposter · 23/08/2022 20:34

i am 5' 8" and weigh 12st 10lbs and wear either a size 16 or 18. My BMI is 26.9, overweight but not in the obese category.
I am not massive, huuuge and very fat but I could do with loosing a stone and a half.
I am surprised to read people are 17st and size 18. Also 12st+ would look different on someone of 5' 2"
People come in different heights and builds. On another thread someone posted that they didn't realise any woman could wear size 42 shoes!
Size 18 is the top size in the normal range of clothes. Above that and you are looking at plus size ranges.
Lets just keep to the facts without emotion and stop looking for the opportunity to make digs at people and make them feel bad.
People who need to lose weight usually know it.
I am also old enough to have been an adult in the 70s. I wore size 12 in my twenties, 14 after I had the children and 16 after the menopause. I don't think sizes have generally inflated as much as all that (except at M&S perhaps).

I was a size 6 10 years ago (well, maybe not precisely 10 years ago because I was pregnant at the time!) and I am size 6 now. I am objectively underweight but I don't make an effort to be so and I've never had an ED. I just have a fast metabolism. My body may not be exactly the same 3 children and 10 years later, but it isn't actually larger. And it's amazing how many people think it's fine to say things to me like, "You must never eat" and "oh, you're skin and bone". I'm actually not skin and bone, I just have a very narrow frame!

I don't believe that woman is a size 14...
