To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

The poster, with a very large following, is saying a size 18 isn't really plus size by much, and that 'most people (in the UK), are above a Size 16?

Really? I don't know that many people above a size 16. I really don't. I know lots and lots of size 12/14 and thought that was about average? It's usually the first sizes to sell out

And if a size 8 is now 40 inches hip, what’s a size 20? Last time I was a size 8, my hips were 26 inches.

Changechangychange · 22/08/2022 00:31

There is “average” as in “if you add up everyone’s dress size and divide by the number of people, you get size 18”. Which is possibly true, though I doubt it (would still say 14-16 more likely).

Then there is “average” as in “a size 18 isn’t even overweight”, and unless you are over 6ft, that is almost certainly not true.

TeapotTitties · 22/08/2022 00:33

I think you need to read what I also said? I didn’t say everyone was not eh same medication but people have health conditions etc that affect their weight? Ignorant on purpose or?

No, I don't think you're being ignorant on purpose but you do seem to be twisting the OP's words.

I can understand why because you see it a lot on threads about weight, but they're not being personal towards you.

My post is really just relating to a very popular Instagram page insisting a size 16 Isn't plus size and just average

I think it is a goady thread to be honest. So you don't want people to think size 16 is okay because it will make them more likely to be size 16 or stay a size 16? I'm not buying it. You just don't want people to think they are acceptable as a larger size. And you think they should KNOW they aren't acceptable by having to buy clothes from plus size stores. Obesity is a huge problem in this country, and it won't be fixed by tying acceptance to dress size.

I gained a fuck tonne of weight a few years back - I went from 9st to 16st - which made a size 18-20 at 5ft 2. I was very unwell and that plus the meds/treatment caused the weight gain.

Even during pregnancy, I’d never been more than 11st. It was horrific. Once I was well, I made it my priority to shift the weight. My knees hurt, I couldn’t even walk upstairs without getting out of breath, I had to go on blood pressure meds. I was banging into things constantly as I wasn’t used to being that big (plus I’m Dyspraxic so even worse!). My body felt entirely alien to me.

It is definitely plus size. It is not glamorous, it is not healthy, and it shouldn’t be fucking normalised.

Wow so aggressive. 16 stone is actually way bigger than size 18

Yes but the thing is, it is average and has been for years.

Have you never looked at the UK obesity statistics?

Adventur3time · 22/08/2022 00:35

It likely is average, as in the sheer amount of obese people in the UK has dragged the statistics number up. But people have probably gotten confused and think that 'average' equates to 'normal'.

AlexandriasWindmill · 22/08/2022 00:40

It's not a value judgement. It's a statement of fact that size 16 is the average size for women in the UK. Also, a statement of fact that most plus-size ranges go up to size 32 at least. So yy size 18 is barely in a plus-sized range.
That has nothing to do with whether it's healthy or obese.
It's purely about clothing labels and categories.

Yes or that average relates to healthy.

It's the same with children, childhood obesity has been steadily getting worse for years but with so many overweight adults caring for children it's a very tough nut to crack.

Jourdain11 · 22/08/2022 00:48

Lucky average. I can't find clothes that fit me at all in shops - literally nothing!

MistyGreenAndBlue · 22/08/2022 00:51

I dont think in terms of "plus" sizes or - what are we calling it - "normal" sizes? Just sizes.

A 5ft 2 size 8. For her, that's normal. HER normal. Size 14 would be plus to her but not to a perfectly healthy, well built, large busted woman of 5ft 10. So.. where does "plus" begin?
It's all bollocks really. Marketing bollocks. They're all just sizes.

YellowPlumbob · 22/08/2022 00:53

AuntTwacky · 22/08/2022 00:34

Nope, I was an 18 on top and a 20 on bottom. My boobs didn’t get any bigger, I carried it on my stomach/hips/thighs.

And given that as I said above, a size 8 is now a 40 inch hip, which I find ridiculous.

I recently ordered the smallest size of Lucy and Yak dungarees a size 4 - hip size 34 inches and they hung off me - I’m now 9st 7lbs (ish). Their size 8 is 36.2 inches, a size 22 is 51 inches.

At my heaviest, my hip size was around 42 inches. Which would have made me a size 10-12 in that brand.

So you’re wrong about 16st being more than a size 20.

I can see from the L&Y SM group they’ve had a lot of kick back about them making all their sizes 4 inches bigger than they were previously, to pander to anyone who needs a bigger size.

Vanity sizing is everywhere. A size 16 now is probably an old money size 22.

LilacPoppy · 22/08/2022 00:55

When people say a 16 is average they mean the measurements that were actually a size 12 twenty years ago. A modern size 16 or 18 are both very large and definitely plus size.
14 and above is plus and 10-12 is midsize.
People need to stop being so pc re "fat shaming".

Plus literally means 'plus' as in 'extra' - so above the norm.

If the norm (When it comes to selling clothes) is say size 6 to 16 then anything above that becomes 'plus'.

PeloAddict · 22/08/2022 00:56

@AuntTwacky depends on your height
Am I plus size? But people seem to have this thing that a size 18 is heaving themselves upstairs gasping for air and unable to wipe their own arse (I've seen on here before)
This is me at an 18

To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

No value judgement there. I agree.
60% women in the UK are overweight or obese, the average size is obviously going to be quite large.

Size 32?! Is this typically sold?? I mean I realIe you can buy this, it I would have assumed it was special order rather than widely available in the shops. I can’t actually imagine it.

I would say you are plus size pelo yes.

PeloAddict · 22/08/2022 00:59

@Quincythequince I missed a word Grin
It was meant to say "am I plus size? Yes"
But if you say 17 stone or size 18, what people think and what we actually look like is a different matter

HellonHeels · 22/08/2022 01:00

I can't understand why you care. Just stop following her on insta and think about something more important.

TeapotTitties · 22/08/2022 01:01

Oh for goodness sake do we really have to have photos of people on this thread? 🙄

Anyone who says that they genuinely do think that person looks plus sized or overweight/obese is just going to get jumped on for being honest, and the photo poster is just going to get upset.

This is a discussion forum, not Instagram.

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 01:01

Absolutely. The Same Size at different heights looks very different indeed.

Justine878 · 22/08/2022 01:04

Well I like the picture, and I think that dress really suits you.

RhubarbMoon · 22/08/2022 01:05

Size 16 being average doesn't stop it being plus size. It just means that the average size of women in the UK is plus sized - the average UK woman is overweight.

PeloAddict · 22/08/2022 01:06

It should just be sizing really like men have
Ranges for petite and tall and maternity and the rest is just.. size
Most designer clothes are going to have a smaller size range, same with small brands

PeloAddict · 22/08/2022 01:09

In fact Next seems to do it pretty well, I just looked at a pair of trousers and there is short, regular, long, extra long. Size 6 to 26
Probably covers the vast majority of people
