To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

sanddownthatwall · 22/08/2022 00:09

The poster, with a very large following, is saying a size 18 isn't really plus size by much, and that 'most people (in the UK), are above a Size 16?

Really? I don't know that many people above a size 16. I really don't. I know lots and lots of size 12/14 and thought that was about average? It's usually the first sizes to sell out

Anything over a size 14 is plus size.

Wait a minute. Are posters really attaching photos of women from newspapers and calling them huge! You really do have to be an arsehole to think this is okay!

It’s from a newspaper article about women’s clothing sizes so I think it’s fine, thanks

Greentree6455 · 24/08/2022 07:08

@Ithinkitsenoughnow

It's really not fine to post a picture of a stranger and call that person huge. It's not fine to post a picture of ANYONE and call that person huge! I don't care where the picture originates from. If you think it's fine then you are an arsehole. Why on earth do you think that is an okay thing to do? wth is wrong with you?

When being criticised for 'attaching photos of women from newspapers and calling them huge' can anyone really lack the intelligence to think the part they need to defend is attaching the photo? 😆

Paq · 24/08/2022 07:24

@PeloAddict would you mind me asking if you are wearing any control underwear in your photo?

OddsandSods · 24/08/2022 07:29

This thread is awful. Just mind your own fucking business. You don’t see men doing body shaming. I really despair of women sometimes.

I’ve been on soooo many threads where people post a photo of someone very thin and comment about that too. Someone also posted a photo of a size 18 model.

whatever then I’m an arsehole 🤷🏻‍♀️ I really couldn’t care less

Unfortunately, men do. It's men who set the standards for what women should look like. Then certain types of women enable them by shaming those who don't conform. They do it because they're so used to taking men's lead in all things. So if men say a large female body is disgusting, they believe it. Centuries ago when fat women were considered beautiful by men, they'd have believed that too, and thought slim women were disgusting.
This is in no way a comment about health issues, by the way, as trawling through the gutter press to find pictures of women with larger bodies to insult, feel superior to, or as a tool to delude oneself about what certain dress sizes look like, is nothing to do with health.

My point was to compare this woman who says she is a 14 with the model someone posted who is 18 and looks far slimmer, and to say that the clothes sizes are not a good measurement/it’s an imperfect system but sure, I’ve done it to make myself feel better 🙃

Christmastreejoy · 24/08/2022 07:59

Well this is a depressing thread. I’m a size 20. I know I’m massive but now I also know the disgust this seems to trigger in the majority of people on this post. I have mobility issues (not related to my weight) and am exercise intolerant because of a health issue. I also have pcos and am on medication that causes weight gain. It’s an uphill struggle to loose any weight at all.

Well you were wrong in your judgement that the person in the picture is huge.

Did someone call you an arsehole?? They're wrong to do that. You're just a little clueless and at worse a bit dim.

Ignore. Most people don’t think like this. Online forums contain a large percentage of odd people who don’t make friends in real life (I wonder why?)

”huge” is subjective though, isn’t it? So I’m not wrong; you just don’t agree with me.

No, none. I don't own any!

User45446 · 24/08/2022 08:58

@Christmastreejoy

I posted yesterday, I said it was news to me at size 18 that I was huge, I know I'm big but didn't realise I was huge.

The first post about my comment was that it was baffling! 😂(I'm assuming that was because I didn't KNOW I was huge). Which is kind of what some posters want from this thread, they want you to KNOW that you are not good enough. And why do they want you to know that? Well, they might argue that awareness was important, but I had already said I was aware it was unhealthy and was doing something about it (in the same short post) , so it wasn't that... It was just about making me feel bad (in my opinion). And that's not about me is it? That's about them.

It didn't work, I don't feel bad. If people want to judge you for your weight, that's not your concern. My mum always told me that what other people thought of the way I looked was none of my business, it seemed strange when I was young, but it makes sense now. Nobody knows you like you do, the majority of people see more than a persons weight, and well, you are good enough. You are size 20 and you are good enough.

You can never really win on mumsnet, so enjoy being imperfect and don't hate yourself for it, and if that pisses people off, all the better. Just don't buy into what some posters on mumsnet say because you will suffer for it.

Focus on the posts and the posters that show kindness, or humour, or intelligence (or anything worthwhile).

Sometimeswinning · 24/08/2022 09:05

Ithinkitsenoughnow · 24/08/2022 08:44

Id say it was subjective due to your own size.

Or the model in the picture is actually the same shape and size as you and you're self projecting. Which I'll go with over you being a Borrower!

Kashmirsilver · 24/08/2022 09:07

Just returned from holiday. The brits are leading the way in unhealthy body mass index. Men and women.
In a nation of obesity, a huge slew of people is going to be really ill over the next few decades.
Size 12 and over and a 34-inch waist for men is too much.

User45446 · 24/08/2022 09:32

Ithinkitsenoughnow · 24/08/2022 08:44

It could be argued that lots of words are subjective. The word stupid for example. If I was to call something stupid that would be based on my intelligence and what I expected from others? But it's still fairly clear what I mean when I say I think something is stupid?

I don't think I understand what your argument is?

Yet what you actually posted was a picture saying this woman 'says' she is a size 14, and she looks huge. After telling someone else that her friends were lying when they said she looked slim. There must be some personal motivation for seeking out pictures of women's bodies and calling then huge, and trying to make a woman believe that anyone telling her she didn't look OW was lying, both potentially quite hurtful acts. It's seems a little invested for someone with no skin in the game.

TheyreOnlyNoodlesMichael · 24/08/2022 09:35

It's so heartening to see that this thread is continuing. 36 pages of very concerned women discussing other "huge" and "enormous" and "massive" women. Only because they're concerned for their health though.

Fatballs · 24/08/2022 10:08

If 6/8 is very slim... 10 is slim... then a 12/14 is around a medium, a bit curvy on the 14 side.

Quoting dress sizes on their own as a measure of slimness/hugeness is pointless. You will only convey the true picture when you give the height as well.

heshehahahehe · 24/08/2022 10:13

I'm now a size 14.

At 5'3, that is far too much for me or anyone of my height! I no longer have much of a waist.

I was just saying somewhere else how it's a slippery slope.

Strict diet from now until back into size 10 again. And even then need to loose more as a 10 on me is usually when my BMI is about 26 so still overweight on me

To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'
heshehahahehe · 24/08/2022 10:15

I'm not sure why people take such offence to being called fat either. It's bad for you. Plenty of family smoke and they're told how bad it is for them all the time - it's also frowned upon generally anyway and less and less people smoke

Sadly more and more people are getting fat - usually because you can't escape food. You have to learn to live with it and ear moderately and it's hard. Fucking hard. You can't say no full stop to food like you can drink

Comedycook · 24/08/2022 11:39

Because in our society it's not just a health issue....it's about looks too. Vast majority of people who are unpleasant towards overweight people don't give a dam about the other person's health...their focus is on the person's looks.

As an aside, of course being very obese is not good for someone's health but there is research now that shows just being very slightly overweight can actually be a positive thing in terms of health.

The only time my weight has been in the healthy BMI zone is when I've only eaten one meal a day.
