Has anyone seen the recent tweet about her pawning/selling three diamond engagement rings? Aibu to think if you are pleading poverty and asking the general public to donate money one week and then showing off pictures of three massive diamonds you own the next, it's never going to go down well? Especially when you are already being challenged on lying and grifting?

For a long time I thought JM was nothing but a force of a good but I can't understand how she can be so tone deaf. It can't be deliberate but equally how can she not realise how it looks to produce three huge rings just a week after claiming she's so skint she needs handouts.

Apologies if there's already a thread on this.

Yes exactly as PP says. People donate this way to someone they see as a figurehead, in this case someone purporting to fight on their behalf for a cause - in the way you might donate to a charity or for a n emergency appeal.

Keyansier · 24/08/2022 18:15

@BishyBarnyBee
Why on earth would anyone give her, personally, £200? You'd have to have an awful lot of money and not a lot of common sense to give that money to any individual rather than your local food bank. Not convinced that rings true.

How quickly people seem to forget the ongoing Captain Tom charity investigation.

The more people think their donations are going towards the greater good, the less likely they'll stop and actually think about what they're doing before they do it.

And that's what grifters rely on.

Yes, but the Captain Tom donations weren't openly going to an individual, my recall is it was about them creaming off an unreasonable amount as a salary. This is slightly different as people are giving knowing it goes direct to Jack. I'm not talking about the books/t shirts here, but about donations to the tip jar or Patreon which are clearly for Jack's personal living expenses.

WhereAreMyAirpods · 24/08/2022 18:25

Why would anyone give a Nigerian prince money? Or send money to an "American army medic" who they've met on Tinder and who needs money to get his wages out of Ghana?

You don't need to scam everyone to be effective. Just enough people.

You just need to see the threads on here which are blatant begging posts and people are falling over themselves to PayPal money.

She's very good at pulling on the heartstrings - I think people get caught up in the drama and the woe, and it's just so easy to click over some money in seconds. They probably feel like they've helped someone and get the warm fuzzies from it. It's the immediacy that helps her, I think, because people don't need to stop and think much about it.

The patreon would be more die-hard fans, I presume.

Clymene · 24/08/2022 19:00

I think she's muddied the waters enough that some people aren't clear if their money is going to her or to foodbanks. I mean you have to admit the buy two books and I'll give one to a foodbank grift was genius. She gets the books at cost from her publisher, and who knows where the difference goes.

People read that Hunger Hurts blog and they feel sorry for her. They don't want to believe that she's taking them for a ride. And that is I'm afraid largely down to the celebs and media who give her a platform and don't do their due diligence. They've given her credibility.

donquixotedelamancha · 24/08/2022 20:10

I don't think that's fair. She can be an incredibly eloquent and persuasive writer. There are dozens of haigiographic articles and interviews from reputable sources describing her as a champion of the poor. If you are following her on Twitter you will see very little other than affirmation.

Some people like to donate directly because many big commercialised charities are little better than JM.

I think it's far more understandable falling for her guff than many other cons.

JubileeTrifle · 24/08/2022 20:15

Remember she has also said she has given thousands of her books to food banks. Who paid for even though?

JubileeTrifle · 24/08/2022 20:15

Them though!

donquixotedelamancha · 24/08/2022 20:19

Nigella put a begging bowl out for Jack's Patreon so I wonder what her response to Jack's tweet yesterday saying she had refused a massive amount of work and exposure.

I imagine that when you come from Jack and Nigella's background, anything less than £200k a year seems poor. Nigella wasn't the sharpest tool before all the coke and booze- I don't see her putting the pieces together.

Bubblebubblebah · 24/08/2022 20:34

BishyBarnyBee · 24/08/2022 16:54

I've followed this with far too much interest. Started off convinced these were right wing attacks on someone who had done a lot of good, but AM's forensic job of pulling out all the inconsistencies is pretty convincing.

I know very few will agree, but I'm still leaning towards messed up and chaotically vulnerable rather than calculatingly evil. I thought this tweet made some sense. I'm more and more convinced that what she needs is to get off twitter and try for AA's life of "sane and happy usefulness" in a low profile normal job like most of us have to manage. Anyone who cares about her should be helping her ditch the drama and focus on getting well.

However, I have two questions at this point.

Why on earth would anyone give her, personally, £200? You'd have to have an awful lot of money and not a lot of common sense to give that money to any individual rather than your local food bank. Not convinced that rings true.

Also, why is it not in any of the newspapers? They've been very happy to go for Rashford and Lewis. Why aren't they reporting this if it's true?

AM retweeted someone having an article in Guardian.
Makes you wonder why that specifically?

Is the t shirt and bags for charity thing still running? Is she still selling them and not saying where the proceeds are going? Or has that finished now?

Still selling them, although that awful 'Dead people can't riot' slogan tee is unavailable. It says on the front page of the shop that 100% of profits go to charity, but doesn't state which charity.

Still online.

Still no way of finding out if the remainder of money received into her account went anywhere near a charity - would have been so more transparent if it had been set up with their standard (and free) registered charity format that complies with fundraising legislation.

You just have to take her word for it that an undisclosed sum of money has been withdrawn into her account and then distributed to an undisclosed number of undisclosed charities. Relying upon honesty and good organisation, as it were.

After all, it's not as if she has ever lied or fucked up financially at all. The perfect person to entrust with huge sums of money and assume that they will go to charities without the Gift Aid they could have also included, in their entirety.

Those are dreadful! Real 6th form political statements that make no sense.

you get the impression from JM that she thinks she is incredibly eloquent and intelligent but sadly this doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.

I went to school with a girl who was similar, would write reels of ranting, pseudo political rubbish with the idea they were erudite and seeing what others couldn’t. Sadly she couldn’t see that she was an idiot.

SweetSakura · 24/08/2022 22:25

Is the "someone" referred to in this actually Jack?

Jack Monroe again
SweetSakura · 24/08/2022 22:28

It doesn't state anywhere on that teemill site whether any money goes to any charity?

EarringsandLipstick · 24/08/2022 22:30

She's been busily deleting tweets today, including the one about turning down all those work opportunities - a tweet today from here says all were unpaid.

It's really frustrating as she's continually painting & editing a narrative, that superficially seems to hold up.

It's purely to keep people who only look at the profile to believe the narrative sold. The screenshots are put there, but will the followers see them? Probably not until it's too late

catinboots123 · 24/08/2022 22:42

The 'Hunger Hurts #2' is genius.

She's rinsing spaghetti hoops and boiling soap for shower gel.

She also has a face full of recent Botox, 2 pairs of Tiffany earrings, a 2k designer dog and two recent lovely holidays.

But screenshots of her bank account showing 14p. It's the ultra modern day con and (£150 pig skin) hat off to her for the absolute blatant grift

catinboots123 · 24/08/2022 22:48

Oh and this is her office/dining room where she lives in poverty in her terrible rented home

All available online by Jack herself btw

She's also acquired a load of labels which she uses as a shield, such as 'disabled', 'autistic', 'trans', 'lesbian' and 'alcoholic' which means anyone criticising her can be shrugged off as transphobic or some other 'phobia' or 'ism' and will get all the usual suspects rushing to defend her.

Always.

Don't forget immigrant thrown in. I don't know how second or third gen felt about i, first gen, but I felt insulted by it being thrown as defence against rightful questions
