Has anyone seen the recent tweet about her pawning/selling three diamond engagement rings? Aibu to think if you are pleading poverty and asking the general public to donate money one week and then showing off pictures of three massive diamonds you own the next, it's never going to go down well? Especially when you are already being challenged on lying and grifting?

For a long time I thought JM was nothing but a force of a good but I can't understand how she can be so tone deaf. It can't be deliberate but equally how can she not realise how it looks to produce three huge rings just a week after claiming she's so skint she needs handouts.

Apologies if there's already a thread on this.

Who has 3 engagement rings? Aren’t you supposed to give them back?

I’ve inherited 2 engagement rings - how would I give them back? The grandfather that purchased them are also dead

PyjamaFan · 15/08/2022 07:02

I also wondered why she pawned rather than sold them. Maybe it's so she could then moan about how they only fetched a fraction of their value. More of the 'woe is me' for twitter.

tenbob · 15/08/2022 07:03

The side of angels 👼
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I’ll give her some credit, she has, despite all her chaos, created a cult
of personality that most religions would be proud of

Her disciples followers are more brand loyal than most evangelical Christians I know…

lollipoprainbow · 15/08/2022 07:04

I get her confused with Lily Allen.

Sharrowgirl · 15/08/2022 06:22

I don’t quite understand. If she’s selling/pawning said diamonds, then surely that means she is skint? Seems consistent to me…

My thoughts entirely.
Never understand this targeting of Jack. So nasty.

Viewfromthetower · 15/08/2022 07:09

Surely selling would release more money as pawning gets less/needs buy back?

RaspberryBeret1999 · 15/08/2022 07:10

how recently has she asked for money/donations?
and when she talks about being poor, is it not in the past tense?
only recently started following her so to me it reads that she’s been there, come through it and wants to help others if they’re experiencing poverty.

Baycitystroller · 15/08/2022 07:10

How can she always be skint?? I don’t get it. I accept she’s been poor at times but she’s had books published and been on TV. Surely she’s paid? What does she do with the money? Bizarre

bloodyunicorns · 15/08/2022 07:11

@RaspberryBeret1999 - a few days ago. Check her Twitter.

EveSix · 15/08/2022 07:16

Engagement rings may hold sentimental value, hence pawning.
I'd definitely see parting with inherited family jewellery as an absolutely last resort and would want to try to pawn as opposed to sell.
Jack seems to do precisely zero actual harm -what is the problem?

Yesterday. Every single post or recipe has a PayPal link at the bottom. There are 15 links at the top, 2 of which are links to PayPal, and an affiliate link (ie she gets paid extra) to her books. Oh and another to her merch.

I don't care if she makes money. Or has money. I do care that she constantly pleads poverty.

Being skint is her usp.

Thank you, I was scrolling through twitter and couldn’t see her asking for money. Like you, I feel that’s fair enough having links to her books, or a “tip jar”, we all have to earn 🤷‍♀️ however I still don’t see her claiming she’s living in dire poverty, only that she has experienced it.

As for pawning and not selling, considering the trolling she gets, maybe she felt pawning was safer than gumtree/eBay/marketplace?

You’d think she and ‘come through it’ after a decade-long media and publishing career, but seems to still have to survive off a £20/week food budget, and selling her and her son’s possessions to make it through the week

Which in itself is not a brilliant message for those hoping they can escape poverty… she makes it seem like a life sentence

Clymene · 15/08/2022 07:31

She posted this at the very end of July: cookingonabootstrap.com/2022/07/ when she wrote she is SO poor she has had to take the lightbulbs out and hasn't bought shampoo for 2 years.

Lots of people sent her money. They she posted the engagement rings the other day. Surely you sell those first before you go on the beg?

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 15/08/2022 07:31

I don't care if she makes money. Or has money. I do care that she constantly pleads poverty.

And I care that the very people who follow her are giving her money and they are in poverty.

Glad you asked. 1) The people financially supporting her / responding to the latest crisis by opening their wallets, are usually those who can ill afford to spare anything.

  1. It’s poverty cosplay, as someone on the previous thread wrote. It perpetuates an inaccurate idea of poverty for those who are lucky enough not to be experiencing it, so that people think about the horror of making your own soap (spoiler: it’s 30p at Lidl, going up to 50p a bar at Waitrose) or negotiating with a Shylock-style pawnbroker over jewellery. I’d say (and I run a food bank for a living, so I’m speaking with my finger on the pulse unfortunately) that these would be unusual ways for poverty to manifest in urban areas of the UK in 2022.

So I’d say she might be causing some harm actually. And it’s a shame, because if she focused on highlighting issues of food poverty, she’d do much more good.

CornishGem1975 · 15/08/2022 07:36

She's ridiculous. If she is skint then she's horrible at managing money. That's not a dig at actual skint people.

Jack has had more than enough opportunities in the media to make a decent amount of money. I know lesser "influencers" without the same level of followers or media presence that easily make a proper full time salary - 6 figures in some cases. How can Jack have nothing?

Not forgetting her partner over the past few years while she was still bleating how hard life was, was high up at C4 so I doubt on the breadline.

She's a disgusting human being.

gogohmm · 15/08/2022 07:36

I don't think some of you realise how blogs/vlogs/podcast type things work- the PayPal/patreon/stars depending on platform are to support the site - I listen to lists of podcasts and they are all asking for voluntary £5 a month or whatever to support their work, some are very well known.

Why shouldn't Jack or anyone else monetarise their website? She obviously isn't good with money exasperated by an irregular income. I doubt she earns anywhere near as much from books or broadcast as you think either. If you don't like her stop reading about her! She has put a great resource of recipes into the public realm on her website for which personally I'm grateful for when I was having to watch the pennies

Wonnle · 15/08/2022 07:37

It's nothing short of begging really .

Oblomov22 · 15/08/2022 07:37

I too don't understand why she's always skint. What does she did with her money? She's had books published and tv shows. What income does she have now. What job does she do?

She may have been very skint at one point, long ago, as a young single mum. But then she made herself by telling others what to do. Is she now not taking her own advice?

And even if something does happen again now, you at least try to pull your socks up and get on with things and try and get back to not being skint again.

with all the opportunities presented to her to now claim to have been skint again, or all the time? Or yet again? You can't be skint always, for like 40 years consistently , without someone thinking that is just odd. just seems ridiculous.

She’s giving out inaccurate energy bill advice all over Twitter. I’d say that’s pretty harmful. And just try to disagree or point out her advice is bad. You’ll get a pile on.
