Has anyone seen the recent tweet about her pawning/selling three diamond engagement rings? Aibu to think if you are pleading poverty and asking the general public to donate money one week and then showing off pictures of three massive diamonds you own the next, it's never going to go down well? Especially when you are already being challenged on lying and grifting?

For a long time I thought JM was nothing but a force of a good but I can't understand how she can be so tone deaf. It can't be deliberate but equally how can she not realise how it looks to produce three huge rings just a week after claiming she's so skint she needs handouts.

Apologies if there's already a thread on this.

@Bubblebubblebah 😆

Clymene · 21/08/2022 17:44

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g - oh I'm sure her devout fans will still believe she's the second coming. I didn't mean them. I meant the media. Her brand is becoming toxic.

Her massive tantrum about Oliver getting the gig that should have been hers and the spiteful dig at Tom Kerridge exposes the fact that this isn't about helping people out in poverty, it's about her.

And this blog makes her look seriously dodgy. No talent/PR person is going to touch her with a bargepole.

BuenoSucia · 21/08/2022 17:48

I’m still lolling about boiling the soap. 29p for 4 in Lidl?

bootstrap recipe:

2 dr bronners Castile soap (£9.90)
10 drops Chanel #5 for scent (0.2p)
1 bottle distilled organic rainwater from the foothills of the Himalayas (£9)
2 bone China pump action dispensary bottles (£24.95 affiliate code)
boil for 6 hours at 48p/KWH (check your prices first paupers!)

decant into bottles. Use an old Muslin cloth to wipe up the spills from the side of your rangemaster.

Selectiveattention · 21/08/2022 17:52

She's taken the platform away from someone who is a)actually poor and b)can actually cook
THIS

tallulahtiger · 21/08/2022 17:55

The Jamie Oliver rant really showed her true colours. Like a toddler kicking off. If she truly cared about helping the poor it wouldn't matter who did it. I'm not a big Jamie Olivier fan but I'm much more comfortable watching him present than her. I can't put my finger on it but she's not a natural or likeable presenter and it always feels a bit car crash when she's on.

But aside from that if she's conning well meaning people out of money then it's a much bigger issue.

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 21/08/2022 17:59

I can't believe her suggestion on Twitter on her "fish pie" recipe when asked if there was boiled eggs in it, "you can chop some pickled eggs into it if you like"...

Ugh, I question if she actually eats, let alone cooks 😐

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 21/08/2022 18:01

Jamie Oliver v Jack Monroe, Cook vs Crook....
I know whose food I'd rather eat 😶

Clymene · 21/08/2022 18:15

I think there's an important other point in that blog which is about the amount of nutrition (or lack of) in her cheap recipes.

That's why the hoop and bean rinsing is so absurd. If you're actually struggling to feed your family enough calories to keep them going, pouring all the sauce down the sink is absolutely stupid. And it's a really dangerous bit of advice. A can of beans in sauce is 324 calories. The beans only make up 140 of those calories. She is literally telling people that it's a really good idea to pour nearly 200 calories down the drain.

It's poverty performance for people who will never ever be in that position. Absolutely sickening.

hop321 · 21/08/2022 18:34

One big difference for me with Jack and Jamie is that annoying as he is, Jamie’s food generally looks and tastes good, Jacks attempts really don’t.

I watched the macaroni cheese on This Morning clip that someone posted earlier. Honestly my 15 year old son would have made it look more appetising. And even then Phil and Amanda cooked most of it.

I think there will be a terrible fall down with panicked JM trying to keep up the game and the blind supporters hunting everyone who agrees with the article. Every character has these "armies" of totally ott people.
I caught recently on twitter about charity cafe being bullied because the charity leader spoke against Corbyn ir that part of labour... A charity ffs

I don't know when so many people became credulous, unquestioning and blind to the glaringly obvious faults of the self appointed "heroes" in many different walks of life. It seems like a disease at times. I know times are tough and perhaps people feel the need to cling to beliefs, but it really isn't healthy.

I could point to another female Insta influencer in this category but I don't want to divert the thread. The extent that her followers will go to, to defend her (when there's clear evidence to the contrary) is really strange.

These people aren't saints. You put yourself on social media and act manipulatively or deceitfully but anybody that criticises you is a troll? I don't understand the unequivocal support for a random stranger selling you stuff on social media.

ilovebagpuss · 21/08/2022 19:06

I feel the vitriol on these threads is excessive, I have not given any money or been scammed and others can certainly tut and scroll on by if they feel JM is a con artist.
Somehow it feels more personal hatred perhaps for other reasons and it doesn't sit well with me.

I don't agree that people should just scroll by if they think something is a scam.
Where do you draw the line on "acceptable" scam?

No. I don't hate JM, I've never met her and no one I've seen on this thread has been unreasonable. I think part of the problem is people identifying "justifiable criticism based on known facts, as stated by the person themselves" as "hatred". People in the public eye, especially when they put themselves there, have always had scrutiny. It is only recently that this seems to be an issue, perhaps involving the fatuous #bekind movement.

It is quite possible to be a kind and decent person and also say when things don't add up.

So we just let people keep scamming people because it hasn't affected us.

Nope that isn't how it all works scammers need calling out.

If you know anything about jewellery they are hardly massive fortune diamonds. I buy and sell a lot and they won't make her very much at all.
I genuinely don't understand all the bellend politicians out there and other "celebrities" just taking money and doing fuck all and people still love to bitch about someone making a bit of of a living and mostly helping people.
JM never claims she's stoney broke she is downsizing to save up for a deposit and has been very open about that. I'd rather support JM and her one pot meals than Jamie Oliver say who has never faced poverty in his life but has a new show telling us all how to save when cooking in one pot/tin. But it's OK for others to make money.

Actually she does all the time. She said she hasn’t been able to afford shampoo for 2 years she’s always ‘on the bones of her arse.’ Whilst simultaneously buying lots of shit and showing it off. Also her £20 a week shops for 2 adults and child, the ‘can’t afford butter’ nonsense.

Do please point to the vitriol. What I've seen is not vitriol, hate or any of the other OTT words people trot out to try to remind people to #bekind, i.e. shut up and put with being made a fool of. Justified, reasoned criticism, backed up by evidence is not vitriol. Irritation with someone who just won't answer reasonable questions is not hate.

They were probably there all the time, but social media has made it very easy for them to find each other and also for others to exploit this personality trait.

hop321 · 21/08/2022 21:12

I don't hate influencers but I do hate #bekind, particularly when it's aimed at women expressing a valid opinion. Since when did we all have to like everything someone does? Aren't we allowed to present our perspectives about someone who's chosen to share details of their private life on social media?

I think it's particularly justified when the person is (a) selling products and advertising, whether overtly or more subtly (appreciate this is less so for JM) or (b) asking for donations. If money is changing hands, people have the right to ask questions and/or express reservations.

SweetSakura · 21/08/2022 21:22

I dont think pointing out obvious inconsistencies, particularly when combined with rattling a begging bowl, is a sign of hatred or vitriol.

I'm all for kindness and letting people be, but not when they are taking advantage of people in a way that is bordering on (perhaps actually is) fraudulent.

Same as calling out MLMs.

I think you're right. The internet for all its wonders seems to be the lightening rod for all this escalating in the way it has. I'm not sure what can be done other than sufficient numbers of us calling it out when we see it.

Agreed, just like social media felt like an MLM scammers dream but could also easily be used to find evidence to expose the smoke and mirrors

But honestly, it gets old eating so many baked beans. Doing something else with them sometimes is nice to change things up a bit.
