Has anyone seen the recent tweet about her pawning/selling three diamond engagement rings? Aibu to think if you are pleading poverty and asking the general public to donate money one week and then showing off pictures of three massive diamonds you own the next, it's never going to go down well? Especially when you are already being challenged on lying and grifting?

For a long time I thought JM was nothing but a force of a good but I can't understand how she can be so tone deaf. It can't be deliberate but equally how can she not realise how it looks to produce three huge rings just a week after claiming she's so skint she needs handouts.

Apologies if there's already a thread on this.

Blimey, that Medium article! I hope that writer has a tip jar Grin. Will Jack reply?

teawamutu · 21/08/2022 13:35

Anyone on this thread who thinks JM is a tireless, selfless poverty campaigner and everyone criticising her is a monster - just have a look at the Medium article. Skim it and just look at Jack's own screenshots, if you like.

Poyu · 21/08/2022 13:39

All the ridiculous amount of lipsticks not long after claiming not to be able to pay the rent again.

Whole thing is quite shocking and grifty.

BuenoSucia · 21/08/2022 13:57

The only people who ever fell for this twaddle were the sixth form socialist worker types quoting the canary. The ability to compare and contrast facts with lived experience had passed that cohort by.

category12 · 21/08/2022 14:01

It's the audacity of saying she's missed months & months of rent in 2021, and a year later saying I haven't missed a rent payment since 2013...and the rest.

At least we know what's in the closed cupboards - a billion lipsticks. 😆

ilovebagpuss · 21/08/2022 14:22

If you know anything about jewellery they are hardly massive fortune diamonds. I buy and sell a lot and they won't make her very much at all.
I genuinely don't understand all the bellend politicians out there and other "celebrities" just taking money and doing fuck all and people still love to bitch about someone making a bit of of a living and mostly helping people.
JM never claims she's stoney broke she is downsizing to save up for a deposit and has been very open about that. I'd rather support JM and her one pot meals than Jamie Oliver say who has never faced poverty in his life but has a new show telling us all how to save when cooking in one pot/tin. But it's OK for others to make money.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/08/2022 14:25

I wonder (speculation incoming) whether JM is a bit of a one-trick pony when it comes to tone or writing style. She still writes in a way that's consistent with "bread and jam please mummy" even though it seems patently absurd to - her son must be a teen by now and whatever else is going on in her life she is better off and more financially resilient than she was when she wrote that blog post. But that's how she knows to write, so that's the furrow she ploughs? I don't know. The inconsistencies are staggering. I keep coming back to this thread and her Twitter just because I can't quite believe it's all out there like that.

Rantypanties · 21/08/2022 14:32

@ilovebagpuss Jamie Oliver doesn’t ask his followers to pay into his PayPal or has a patreon and hide the income from it. He’s not stating his work is for ‘the poors’ but obviously people are concerned about energy costs and he’s bought out a tv show/book to reflect that. Where’s your beef with Miguel Barclay, who’d I say is more ‘direct competition’ with Jack than Jamie ever was/is.

why are the defenders of Jack constantly bringing up Jamie Oliver? Makes you think…

Poyu · 21/08/2022 14:32

She claims to be stone broke a lot.

Jamie Oliver doesn’t get thousands in donations from a Patreon and give nothing in return. He also doesn’t claim to be so poor he is boiling soap. I’m not a fan of his but I respect that he worked his way up from a pub kitchen to celeb chef.

Cloud9isnowclosed · 21/08/2022 14:48

How is JM helping people though bagpuss - she doesn't signpost effectively, her recipes are not very good and certainly not strong on nutrition. She has taken money of people knowing that they are in poverty. She has media opportunities to talk about poverty but usually talks about herself or tries to 'gotcha' other guests.. The VBI doesn't exist. Foodbanks have received copies of her books - but paid for by others so JM profits (RRP by the way)

The "Poverty hangover" post 3 weeks ago is very dramatic and sounds like she's on the bones of her arse, clutching her goods to take into a pawnbroker, replacing lightbulbs with solar garden lights, boiling soap - she is absolutely painting a picture of poverty and misery - despite saying early in the post that she's not "poor". It's totally calculated to get people shoving their hands in their pockets.

I'm sure she is just downsizing to save for a deposit, but then it's pretty disgusting to crank up the misery angle so hard.

Bubblebubblebah · 21/08/2022 16:09

I think there will be a terrible fall down with panicked JM trying to keep up the game and the blind supporters hunting everyone who agrees with the article. Every character has these "armies" of totally ott people.
I caught recently on twitter about charity cafe being bullied because the charity leader spoke against Corbyn ir that part of labour... A charity ffs

SweetSakura · 21/08/2022 16:15

@ilovebagpuss she very regularly claims to be stoney broke. What level of broke is "can't afford shower gel" and "replacing my lights with solar lamps" and "typing job applications on my mobile phone" if not absolutely, implausibly stoney broke.

And she just cannot be simultaneously so broke she's justified in holding out a PayPal.me begging bowl and yet also able to buy 77 lipsticks and rent a decent sized house in the south east.

Againstmachine · 21/08/2022 16:36

So glad she's getting called out more and more she's a grifter.

I don't understand popularity she has from her frankly rubbish recipes.

Clymene · 21/08/2022 16:37

Wow that article is quite the exposé. I think this has to be the end of Monroe's professional grifting career. Let's hope one of the dozen job applications she 'painstakingly typed' on her mobile phone (slightly bizarrely considering she has a laptop) yields fruit.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/08/2022 16:45

I'm more cynical than you and I don't think it will. As I said days ago on this thread or the previous one, and at least one other poster has also said on this thread, some of her followers are completely uninterested in facts. Following her and defending her satisfies some emotional need and makes them feel virtuous. They are totally unbothered about looking credulous and easily duped. They think they are right and everybody else is wrong and nasty. Logic plays no part in any of this.

See also: people still claiming that the US presidential election was 'stolen' from Trump and planning to vote for him again if they get the chance; people who say out loud that they think Boris Johnson is a decent bloke who's had a lot to put up with; the never-ending flow of stories on You and Yours and in the financial sections of the papers about people who've fallen for obvious scams and lost their life savings, often going out of their way to ignore warnings from family members.

Surtsey · 21/08/2022 16:48

Three diamond engagement rings?? I'm starting to get her and Elizabeth Taylor muddled up...

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 21/08/2022 16:50

I'm glad she's been exposed, although I think some of her followers will just cover their eyes.
She's taken the platform away from someone who is a)actually poor and b)can actually cook.

You may well be right. There's a programme about scammers that shows the marks that their overseas beloved's pictures are nicked, even has the person on to talk to them and say it to them, and you can see they still want to believe the scam despite everything.

She claimed she can’t afford a bottle of shampoo which you can buy for less than a quid. If that’s not claiming to be totally broke then I don’t know what is.
One big difference for me with Jack and Jamie is that annoying as he is, Jamie’s food generally looks and tastes good, Jacks attempts really don’t.

category12 · 21/08/2022 17:08

Plus Jamie isn't pleading poverty or special circumstances. He's just a bloke doing very nicely for himself, thank you very much.

Wish he'd put down the olive oil.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/08/2022 17:28

She hasn't been able to keep it going for this long for nothing, she's good at DARVO. Let's see what happens next..

SweetSakura · 21/08/2022 17:29

Exactly. There's no point saying "but Martin Lewis/Jamie Oliver etc are wealthy too"

They don't pretend not to be wealthy. And they most definitely don't beg for donations at the end of every bleak description of their imaginary poverty.

I always said he must be getting some money under the table from olive oil industry 😂
