To be mad at DH over his stupid fucking car

Shutuppppp · 08/08/2022 06:50

Years ago DH bought a ridiculously expensive (and loud) car with a huge roaring engine. The sound this stupid thing makes when he starts it up is embarrassing.

I am absolutely ready to take a baseball bat to it. We have a young child (13 months) and I do 99% of the overnights as DH works a lot.

He sleeps better than he used to as a newborn obviously but he's been ill the past couple of weeks and has been up and down, often waking at about 3 and then going back to sleep, or trying at least.

But then 6:30am comes and this stupid fucking beast on our driveway starts up and wakes him up and I've just had enough of it. I'm so mad about this ridiculous fucking car.

DH doesn't know what I expect him to do and I don't really know either, all I know is it pisses me off and I'm mad at him about it. Get the fucking bus or something, I don't care just don't wake DC (and me after being up and down all night) with your stupid fucking toy.

Honestly I often wish I'd wake up in the morning to someone having stolen it in the night.

Yeah and it's up to me if it pisses me off.

What does money have to do with waking up your kid and exhausting your wife? She earns money too, is she then allowed to enjoy sounding an air horn in DH’s ear at 3am? After all, she paid for it.

R8’s aren’t loud, nor do their engines rev upon turning on the ignition.

They are on startup, they have a rev limiter for the first 60s I believe to protect the engine but all valves in the exhaust and engine open so it’s idler is loud especially on a cold start

I can assure you it is.

Our neighbours have one of these and regularly go out in the middle of the night or early hours. Really really hate it in the winter when they star it up then rev it for several minutes to warm up.

hoorayandupsherises · 08/08/2022 07:57

He should be able to mitigate this, depending on the exact model:

  • If he starts in gen 1, he can start for a few seconds, turn off and turn back on again and the noise the second time will be considerably less.
  • He can put it straight into first gear (or reverse I suppose) and this will also considerably reduce the noise. Back into neutral once the noise has come right down.
  • Replace the exhaust for one with valves that can be controlled with a remote.
I've seen people say that they've programmed out the cold start, but I have no particular knowledge of that, but it shouldn't be too hard to find.
Thinkingblonde · 08/08/2022 07:58

It could be he’s revving it when he starts it up, foot on accelerator as he turns the ignition on. Not good for the car,, wastes fuel for one thing. If he has to rev it to get it started it needs looking at.
The V thing is the cylinders in the engine are set In V shaped cylinder block V8 for e.g. means it had 8 cylinders with four cylinders on each side of the V. As opposed to a Straight e cylinder block with all eight in a line.

HandbagsnGladrags · 08/08/2022 07:58

Do you live in my street? And does he leave the engine running for like 10 minutes before he drives off? If so, I'll help you take the baseball bat to it.

Just1moreq · 08/08/2022 07:59

Please don't tell him to park further away, that just makes it wake someone else

Thinkingblonde · 08/08/2022 08:00

Typo, just straight, not straight e.

Agrudge · 08/08/2022 08:01

Move the baby to another room .

Problem solved

pigeonstreet123 · 08/08/2022 08:02

We have a noisy car neighbour.
They go to work at 5am every day

😡

MrsPerfect12 · 08/08/2022 08:03

If it's an v8 BMW, Audi or Porsche the sports setting can be switched off and put on to another mode eg eco and the noise is reduced massively - same with fuel consumption.
is he not willing to get rid?

@Agrudge

Emotional Manipulation isnt a good sign in a relationship

Neither is ignoring the fact that you're stressing out your wife and waking up your (unwell) baby son every morning because you want to make a loud noise with your 'broom broom'.

SavoirFlair · 08/08/2022 08:07

because you want to make a loud noise with your 'broom broom'.

The problem however is that certain V8s, V10s, V12 engines open all the valves etc on startup mode and they “roar” before settling down to idle.

so it might not be he wants to make a loud noise - his car is doing that all for him.

The question then is whether he wants to look into how to reduce that sound using aftermarket equipment. Or, change the car because it’s disturbing his newborn

Is it a Subaru? My husband has a Subaru (with a turbo so it also has to 'cool down' at the end of the day.

He had to buy a second run around for work because I was so sick of the noise and the fact our neighbours must have hated us. How we never got a letter I have no idea.

Anyway, YANBU OP.

Only if he drives it like a prat and over revs it when driving. The majority of times we never did this and the turbo was perfectly ok

Glittertwins · 08/08/2022 08:13

@Shutuppppp - I'm jealous, I love R8s!!!!

HoppingPavlova · 08/08/2022 08:13

Our neighbour has a stupid car like this. However, they don’t drive it as a regular car but only maybe a few times a month on weekends. Even that gives me the rage in the moment but I live and let live as they are doing the responsible thing and have it as a rarely used second car, only use it occasionally and on a weekend and even then don’t use it early or late so I really can’t complain at all. Doesn’t mean I don’t hope the stupid thing is stolen from their garage though when they are out😝.

He needs to trade it in for another car. I'm sure he can find a car he enjoys driving that's not as loud. It's not difficult is it.

But he enjoys the car he has. Why waste getting another one for what is probably a few seconds on noise
