AIBU?

Friend not speaking to me because I eat eggs

Upthebracket22 · 19/07/2022 13:18

I am a lifelong veggie- my parents were 70’s hippies & so I have never eaten meat and was raised vegetarian & I don’t eat dairy either but I am not a vegan as I eat eggs - I find I need the protein & generally benefit from eating them.

my friend turned vegan last year and is really militant- sends me horrible videos of baby chicks having their heads cut off etc. i asked her to stop as it was upsetting & I didn’t feel I needed to justify my dietary choices to anyone and now she’s stopped speaking to me. Says she finds it difficult to engage with anyone who eats animal products.

Aibu to feel upset and also a bit like- go & try to covert some meat eaters if that’s your thing but preaching to the converted anyway - I am already trying my best and have had over 40 years of not eating animals - she’s had a year of it. She’s used language like murderer to me etc.

I do feel really upset about it all to be honest.

Just remind her of all the millions of wee critter souls she has eaten, let alone the leather, suede, cosmetics (vivisection), bank notes used (new ones have pig fat don’t they?), old camera film, jabs… then tell her to piss off.

I haven’t the patience for born-agains zealots.

Send her this vm.tiktok.com/ZMNHW9Ggn/?k=1

*no idea how true it is but it made me think.

I recently gave up eggs but it took me a long time after seeing the videos because like you I see the nutritional value. I absolutely hate industrial animal and dairy and egg farming but until there's a solid substitute nutritionally I will continue eating meat and cheese.

It's not true at all. There are plenty of alternatives to meat and dairy, let's not pretend it's the nutritional value, you like the taste! So did I.

I buy my eggs from a local small scale egg producer, I'm very sure it's a home for happy and healthy hens.

What do you think happens to those happy and healthy hens when they no longer produce eggs?

As a veggie of many decades - your ex friend is being extremely U!!! I hope you now have your eggs in a row and are ready to break out of your eggtremely limited friendship - do not solider on
until you boil over. Keep things over easy by letting go (pref after several eggy snacks)

She's an arsehole. Let her go.

No one should be sent extreme videos without consent. You'd do well to take a big step back. But as others have pointed out anyone who is veggie or vegan 'for the animals' would already know about the cruelty of the dairy and egg industry. There is a difference between being vegan and following a plant based diet.

So when she ate meat did you send her videos of abattoirs? (I suspect not)

I rescue ex-battery hens to justify eating eggs... but that's not the right answer here. She's being unreasonable.

@Hachos2018 Earthling Ed is a film production graduate who has done very well out of making sensationalist viral videos about veganism. He has been vegan for quite a short period of time and profits quite well out of merch and his videos.

Chicken manure is the most widely used non chemical fertiliser, so I’d wager you are indirectly contributing to the poultry industry too. I can’t understand why people feel it necessary to try and guilt people with sensationalist videos when they clearly don’t have much of an understanding of the topic themselves.

Fair enough but he is still doing a great deal more for the animals than most people can claim… regardless of what he studied and how long ago he went vegan (7 years btw and at the age of 20, so again, better than most) he developed a whole sanctuary and is a very succseful activist whose arguments are backed with facts. Also, I wasn’t guilt tripping anyone, the poster said they didn’t understand something so I just came with the facts, they engaged and I simply offered a resource for them to find out more. They are free to ignore me - if you feel guilty that’s on you💕🌱

Also, if you’re really trying to say that a person who has been vegan for over two decades (more than half my life) has a comparative impact on the egg / poultry industry as a meat eater or veggie then I am a bit lost for words and likely none of what I will say will change your mind anyways.

But most vegans don’t claim to be perfect. It’s impossible, we live in an imperfect world.. Veganism is about doing what is practically possible to reduce harm and suffering for the animals, not by being an elitist/purist/ perfectionist - we would die! 😆

Oh the born again veggie or vegan are the absolute worst. They give me the rage, pious twats. Just remind her how many eggs, cows, or whatever that you HAVEN'T eaten compared to her & then tell her to shut her silly mouth or she can fuck off.

Just don't accept her nonsense 💐

Does this approach ever work? It’s counter productive isn’t it.

I worked with a militant vegan. She had a horrible diet and talked about little else. Literally complained about every single thing everyone ate and told them what the vegan alternative would be. I had one colleague that used to say after one of her rants he specifically when home and made a bacon cheeseburger, just to get her back.

It’s like my friend that used to whine about pigs being gassed and burned. Who cares, they are just pigs and bacon is amazing.

I think you should roll out the old mumsnet adage with a twist. Instead of 'Did you mean to be so rude?' reply to her with 'Did you mean to be a cunt?'.

Or to prove a point, grab a calculator and work out how much meat and eggs she has eaten over her life prior to becoming Vegan. Calculate your egg intake then let know she is still a dick.

The zeal of the convert.

People like this often hyperfixate on a new cause and then move on. It’ll be something else in twelve months. Nevertheless it sounds like her former friendship is no loss to you.

@Hachos2018 I don’t feel guilty at all! His videos are regularly not backed by facts and that’s the point. He has a real lack of understanding about agriculture, land management and it’s necessary systems. I know this for a fact as I did carry out a four year degree in land management and have managed 100,000 acres of National Park. Animal agriculture is absolutely crucial to its sustainable management. I’m sure a TV production graduate knows better though.

It’s up to you what you eat, I couldn’t really care less but it’s annoying to see people trying to guilt others whilst benefiting from the very animal agriculture that they deride others for, all whilst using unreliable sources.

What baffles me is it is really a belief system. She is judging and choosing to be extremely rude to you because you don't agree with her beliefs around eggs! It sounds absolutely ridiculous and she's being a dick! Let her off!!! I believe eggs taste great, are nutritious, and are so versatile they shouldn't be left out of a diet. Come at me bitch 😅

Interesting that most posters support the OP, yet in another recent thread about an OP questioning whether to cut ties with friend due to anti-abortion views, she was supported too. Either you can be friends with people who have a different moral stance than you, or you can't.
