Friend not speaking to me because I eat eggs

I am a lifelong veggie- my parents were 70’s hippies & so I have never eaten meat and was raised vegetarian & I don’t eat dairy either but I am not a vegan as I eat eggs - I find I need the protein & generally benefit from eating them.

my friend turned vegan last year and is really militant- sends me horrible videos of baby chicks having their heads cut off etc. i asked her to stop as it was upsetting & I didn’t feel I needed to justify my dietary choices to anyone and now she’s stopped speaking to me. Says she finds it difficult to engage with anyone who eats animal products.

Aibu to feel upset and also a bit like- go & try to covert some meat eaters if that’s your thing but preaching to the converted anyway - I am already trying my best and have had over 40 years of not eating animals - she’s had a year of it. She’s used language like murderer to me etc.

I do feel really upset about it all to be honest.

I'm a vegan...really REALLY pisses me off when people do this. All my friends and family eat meat and dairy. I prepare meat dishes for my family. I will sit and eat my meal with others who eat their steaks or lamb shanks without comment. It never enters my head to say anything. Everyone is free to make their choice in what they eat. Militant vegans are insufferable and unbearable. Personally, I would create distance between you and your friend OP and just wait to see what happens. Just ignore her.

I'd be happy to say see ya to someone like that. Don't give her another thought.

Blimey, thanks for all your replies, I have been in a work meeting!

i just feel quite sad about it all- I assume I am not the only person she is cutting from her life either. I feel happy with my mostly plant based diet.

I wouldn’t class myself as a militant vegan but I don’t prepare or cook meat for others. If we’re out for a meal, I try to sit by the other vegans or vegetarians in my family.

Your friend sounds like a prick.

veganism and clean eating has become a dangerous trend right now and it’s just not nice.or actually ironically healthy.

Veganism isn't a diet or a health plan. Living off doritos and vodka is exactly as vegan as living off quinoa and spinach.

Actually I'm not sure if doritos are vegan or not. But you know what I mean.

She’ll calm down after a few years. There is nothing worse than a newly converted someone preaching about their cause.

Not any excuse for your friend, but she is probably in some degree of emotional pain realizing what goes into putting animal products on our plates. It is something many do not consider, and when the facts come to light, it is quite something. The fact that she has cut you off reflects this. Sad situation all around.

Send her some articles about the harm intensive almond, avocado and Soya production does and then block her number.

Eggs are one of the few animal products you can buy local, free range and cruelty free.

Most soya is grown to feed farm animals. But don't let the facts get in the way of your argument. If you think eggs are cruelty free then I'm afraid you have been brainwashed (I am not including the 0.0000000000000001% of global egg production from back yard hens). By all means believe whatever you want. Most people haven't got a clue about the food they eat which is a shame when there is so much info available

Tell her that she’s the type of vegan that gives other vegans a bad name.
I couldn’t be friends with someone who thought they were superior to me and tried to tell me how to live my life.

I buy my eggs from a local small scale egg producer, I'm very sure it's a home for happy and healthy hens.

@Hachos2018 Earthling Ed is a film production graduate who has done very well out of making sensationalist viral videos about veganism. He has been vegan for quite a short period of time and profits quite well out of merch and his videos.

Chicken manure is the most widely used non chemical fertiliser, so I’d wager you are indirectly contributing to the poultry industry too. I can’t understand why people feel it necessary to try and guilt people with sensationalist videos when they clearly don’t have much of an understanding of the topic themselves.

I don’t think anyone should send anyone videos like this if they’ve not asked to see them, but, chick maceration is approved by the RSPCA and is used. Many videos showing it are not sensationalist, it’s just what happens

Why would you want to be friends with her anyway?
I’d happily accept a ghosting

😂 same here! Friends have to accept that you may have different opinions on things. She isn't a friend at all

The zealotry of the convert, I’ve seen it with veganism and religion. Every now and again a thread will pop up on here from a born again Christian trying to save us all. I’d sack her off, she will find herself quite lonely when she’s done with it all in about a year’s time.

just tell her to fuck off and say you don’t care about chicks being mashed up.

@HouseInTheHills I didn’t watch the video as soon as I was it was Earthling Ed. It would have been an entire waste of my time.

Its important to recognise that male chicks in the UK are gassed using argon and used for feed. To the point that the UK imports chicks as food for animals in zoos and pets because we don’t have enough. You can check this out with the Humane Society amongst other sources. So yes, sensationalist.

Tell her to look up screaming vegetables on YouTube.

I’m vegetarian and wouldn’t dream of dictating someone else’s dietary or life choices.
Block her.

Chick maceration is still used in the U.K. as well. So no, not sensationalist.

She’s extreme. You don’t need to justify your lifestyle and dietary choices to her. I’m not a vegetarian but I do think that those who choose vegetarianism because they don’t want to be involved in animal cruelty but still eat dairy products have missed the point. You don’t eat dairy so you’re more in tune with a vegan than most vegetarians (who, I often find, “over compensate” by eating more dairy than omnivores and cause more of an animal welfare issue anyway). Find a new friend.
