Help - Lost $2400

marvellousmaple · 05/07/2022 03:52

As per my title, I have lost a serious amount of money. And no - not on the horses, I've just actually lost it , physically!
It was cash from an online sale and they definitely gave us the money. Last night ( I may have been a tad tipsy) and I decided I should put all that cash away and not leave it in the dining room on the table.
Woke up this morning and I have NO IDEA where I put it!
Before people accuse me of having dementia or something , I am known for this within the family and my mother is too.
Growing up, if you asked mum where something was and she said " oh, I put that in a safe place" well you knew you weren't going to see that for a while. She is now 88 and just starting to forget other things!
We are both completely capable in other ways - just exceptionally good hiders.
I really need to find this though as we need the money!
I have a memory of putting it in a drawer , but I've checked every drawer in the house, and then I thought maybe I'd put it between the leaves of some books. I own hundreds and hundreds of books. Here's hoping I didn't do that. DH will be home in an hour and I've searched everywhere.
HELP PLEASE. ANy ideas no matter how odd appreciated.
ETA - $2400 aussie - I havent checked the cash rates but roughly 1500 pounds!
Not exactly "oops dropped a tenner out of my bag running for the bus type thing.

Um know this isn't really an AIBU but am desperate for ideas.
I feel I am unreasonable for being so incapable!

Make it
YANBU - heaps of people lose things - it will turn up
YABU - you are a total git.

Not sure how we can really help, but my advice is don’t rely on your memory, it can play tricks.

I’d suggest tackling each room/hallway systematically and thoroughly.

Beeday · 05/07/2022 04:03

Sounds nuts but try having a little drink of whatever you were drinking last night and retrace your steps from what you did last night - being in the same situation really helps your brain find the memory.

MaitlandGirl · 05/07/2022 04:04

Check your bin and recycling, on top of the microwave, and in the fridge.

these are the common culprits in our house.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 05/07/2022 04:07

Fridge.

marvellousmaple · 05/07/2022 04:09

Sadly, I've tried the fridge - I did once find my keys in their though!

Pockets? Of whatever you were wearing? Laundry if you took clothes off and put the clothes in there?
coat pockets/jacket pockets?
Purse/wallet?
Dog food bin?
Bread bin?
Wherever you keep your booze?

Boxowine · 05/07/2022 04:28

Have you prayed to St Anthony yet?

Eastie77Returns · 05/07/2022 04:29

My first thought was that it might have been stolen. Was anyone in the house with you when you were drinking?

The person who gave you the money…did they come to your house to give it to you and were you tipsy when they handed it over?

Boxowine · 05/07/2022 04:29

I'm currently looking for the downstairs tv remote. Three weeks and counting.

I'm currently looking for the downstairs tv remote. Three weeks and counting.

I ended up buying another one. Only $14. Then found the lost one so now we have a spare. Huzzah!

tucked into a sock in your sock drawer?
in an empty mint tin?
tea caddy?
in the bathroom medicine cabinet?(incidentally which is where I found my ‘lost’ rings recently)

MissedItByThisMuch · 05/07/2022 04:45

Have you tried taking all the drawers out and checking if it’s fallen down the back of them (assuming it’s in an envelope not just loose notes)? I had that with a passport once.

justfiveminutes · 05/07/2022 04:45

If you thought you needed to move it from the dining table, I'd start with the dining room and check everywhere in there however unlikely. Then search every other room, one at a time. If your memory is of putting it in a drawer, check drawers again or ask someone else to check them. Check under things - pile of mail, pile of magazines. Handbag ready to take to the bank.

bumblingbovine49 · 05/07/2022 04:48

Ask the house fairies to give it back ( politely) while calmly and methodically searching rooms from one corner all the way round. That is what DH always does when he has lost something ( which he does far less often than I do) and he has more success than I do.

Alternatively try my way of getting upset , berating myself for being idiot and randomly pulling things out while asking DH to help ( which he does with a bit of eye rolling)

As I said DH's method does seem to work better . I imagine it is because he asks the house fairies. ( Not because he keeps calm and is methodical - oh no)

marvellousmaple · 05/07/2022 04:52

Thanks all.
Bizarrely I am starting to try to convince myself we've been robbed. But we have a massive dog , and those people saw him. I don't think they would be rushing back to rob the place. I must just be stupid! All DH can remember is me grabbing the cash and saying - we can't leave this here!. Bloody hell.
The back of the drawer isn't a bad shot. I'll try all of those now. FFS. This is not a small house and I am one of those people that "tidies up" by shoving things in drawers! This could take a while.
Thanks for the suggestions. DH on his way.
I bet he bloody finds it before me.

@bumblingbovine49 I think you and I are twins and our husbands too! Seriously annoying when they calmly find whatever you've lost or fix whatever you're problem is. Irritating sods. Lucky we love them!

I haven’t read the full thread, but have you checked your wallet? Like all the secret compartments?
And your handbag? Every little place in there?
Drawers in the kitchen? Underneath something in there, hidden away? Cabinet instead of drawer?
Do you have any furniture that has drawers? I mean, like a table or a sideboard?

marvellousmaple · 05/07/2022 05:10

@IDreamOfTheMoors
Bugger. You got me all excited, as I hadn't checked there. Sadly no. I'm back to looking in drawers.

k1233 · 05/07/2022 05:26

If you have suitcases, try the pockets and anything zipped.

Otherwise in shoes / shoe boxes, taped under drawers / behind furniture.

k1233 · 05/07/2022 05:27

If all else fails, get tipsy again and go to put something in the same spot...

Nugg · 05/07/2022 05:33

Pray to st Anthony. Yeah I thought it was stupid too until I found my lost wedding ring in the bizarre place my head told me to try afterwards!!

Musti · 05/07/2022 05:52

I sent ages tonight looking in the living room for my AirPods case because I was absolutely sure that I had taken them out of their case in the living room and I hadn’t left the living room since wearing them. Absolutely positive. Gave up and when going to bed I saw the case on the hallway radiator cover. I was convinced.

hope you find it soon

Els1e · 05/07/2022 06:05

Try where you were getting your drink from. Bottle rack in fridge, booze cupboard, wine cellar?

thesunwillout · 05/07/2022 06:11

You mentioned having thoughts about having been robbed.

Was there anyone else in your home whilst you had this money out?

Diplidocus4 · 05/07/2022 06:22

In the microwave or oven ? Door shut etc

StoneofDestiny · 05/07/2022 06:28

Under settee cushions. Bread bin. Kitchen cupboard. Magazine rack.
