Help - Lost $2400

marvellousmaple · 05/07/2022 03:52

As per my title, I have lost a serious amount of money. And no - not on the horses, I've just actually lost it , physically!
It was cash from an online sale and they definitely gave us the money. Last night ( I may have been a tad tipsy) and I decided I should put all that cash away and not leave it in the dining room on the table.
Woke up this morning and I have NO IDEA where I put it!
Before people accuse me of having dementia or something , I am known for this within the family and my mother is too.
Growing up, if you asked mum where something was and she said " oh, I put that in a safe place" well you knew you weren't going to see that for a while. She is now 88 and just starting to forget other things!
We are both completely capable in other ways - just exceptionally good hiders.
I really need to find this though as we need the money!
I have a memory of putting it in a drawer , but I've checked every drawer in the house, and then I thought maybe I'd put it between the leaves of some books. I own hundreds and hundreds of books. Here's hoping I didn't do that. DH will be home in an hour and I've searched everywhere.
HELP PLEASE. ANy ideas no matter how odd appreciated.
ETA - $2400 aussie - I havent checked the cash rates but roughly 1500 pounds!
Not exactly "oops dropped a tenner out of my bag running for the bus type thing.

Um know this isn't really an AIBU but am desperate for ideas.
I feel I am unreasonable for being so incapable!

Make it
YANBU - heaps of people lose things - it will turn up
YABU - you are a total git.

I do this a lot OP.
It helps me if I stand in the same place in the house and think
"if I had it in my hand NOW where would I put it?"

Oh yes, I slid it down inside the front of that nearby drawer... or whatever

rebelyellow · 05/07/2022 08:38

I once lost a large sum of money in an envelope. It took ten months to find, I had long given up. I have an ornamental tissue box cover that you put a box of tissues inside, it's got a slit on the top that you pull the tissues out of, but I hasn't put tissues in it for years! For some random reason I'd hidden the envelope inside it and didn't find it until I was doing my annual dust of the mantelpiece Grin literally no recollection of putting it there.

ClinkeyMonkey · 05/07/2022 08:39

Shamelessly following as I do stuff like this all the time. And I REALLY want to know where you find it! I was going to ask about ADHD, but I see someone already has. I think there's a strong possibility I have it myself. When stuff does finally turn up, it seems so bloody obvious that it would have been there, yet somehow my brain sends me off on some weird odyssey. It's blind panic really, isn't it? There are a couple of things I put away 'safely' years ago and I still take a notion to look for them from time to time, just in case!

LunaNova · 05/07/2022 08:43

I find when my DH misplaces something it's handy for me to retrace his steps rather than him because he tunes out certain things he thinks are unimportant.

For example my DH frequently misplaces his keys/wallet so I would start from the last time he remembers having them and talk aloud my thought process "so I'm here, then you went for a shower. Which way would I walk? What do I see on the way? Could I have put it here? Could it have slid under the bed?" Kind of thing. Usually he shadows me and if I've not found it he sometimes suddenly has an epiphany that he actually last saw it in the car.

So in your case I would grab an envelope or a book to get the feel for what might come naturally as you're walking around your house, stand in your dining room and talk aloud about where I'm looking. It might be as silly as you were walking into another room, noticed something else needed doing and absent mindedly put the envelope down and now when you scan the room your brain is missing the envelope which could be hiding in plain sight.

Good luck!

I recently had a sum of money in the house that went missing. I was convinced it had been stolen and I was blaming the kids friends (in my head). A few days later I had a fleeting memory of opening a small drawer I rarely use. Had a look and there it was. Had to apologise to the family for blaming them all! And I wasn't even tipsy!! Hope yours turns up. Might you have sellotaped it to the underside of a drawer? What about under a bedside locker?

toooldtocarewhoknows · 05/07/2022 08:47

I'm like you. Exactly. Grin

My best tip is to stop thinking about it (I know it's hard), when you relax a different part of your brain is accessed. Your retrieval of the memory will be more intuitive if you see what I mean. You'll not actually remember but you'll be able to put your hand on it.

The other way, and if you were tipsy I think this might be the only way, is to return to the state you were in when you put it away safely. This helps you access the memories laid down in this state.

Either of these, or just know that eventually it will appear. It will.

Some things I've put safely away reappear 10-15 years later. But they absolutely always do.

Have you prayed to St Anthony yet?

I was going to suggest that! St Anthony is awesome!

OP I’m so tempted to vote YABU you are a total git, because it made me laugh so much, but you’re not and I hope you find it 🤞🙏

diddl · 05/07/2022 08:49

So if it was on the dining room table, have you goe back there & tried to picture yourself picking up the envelopes & putting them...

MessedOfTimes · 05/07/2022 08:50

Another suggestion…if you have kids, did you put it in a school bag/lunch box or similar? I’m in Aus too and as it’s school holidays, just thought I’d throw that one out there xx

bloodyunicorns · 05/07/2022 08:51

In a tampon box? That's where I'd hide something.

Or another kind of medicine box, eg Calpol, piles cream... No one would think to look there!

Good luck!

MistressoftheDarkSide · 05/07/2022 08:52

I sympathise OP it’s a horrible feeling when this happens… we’re all pack rats in our house too, so the possibilities are endless….

And I’m going to sound absolutely batshit now, but reading the thread I kept “seeing” some sort of blue glass ornament in my head? Like a smooth bowl or vase? I think I must be half remembering a similar experience of losing something myself and it turned up in or near something like that…. Which is the most logical explanation obviously….. or I’m having the most random psychic experience ever …… 😂

Sswhinesthebest · 05/07/2022 09:00

Posting just to see if you find it and which obvious place it actually was.

TheBirdintheCave · 05/07/2022 09:08

I lost £80 once when I was pregnant with my son. I didn't find it until we moved house about six months later and the movers were dismantling the sofa in the guest room 😂

Eatthecake80 · 05/07/2022 09:18

Under the sofa,
on the top of cabinets/kitchen cupboards,
kids toy box,
breadbin,
vases,
under the mattress,
hidden in clothes,
behind the radiator,
jewellery box,
makeup box,
shoes…

Mrsherdwick · 05/07/2022 09:24

Biscuit tin xxx. Good luck finding it.

Have you prayed to St Anthony yet?

I’m not at all religious but I weirdly do this when I’ve lost something.😁 The problem is if you absent mindedly put it somewhere it’s very difficult to recall it. I read recently if you just say to yourself ‘I have put ... in the ....’ your brain will file it and you have a better chance of retrieving it. If I really am at a loss I try to think about it when going to sleep and the memory will sometimes resurface then.

thetemptationofchocolate · 05/07/2022 09:34

I lost a cheque once at work. Not my money, work money, and I lost it. £750. I was frantic and turned my desk right out. Took two days but I did find it in the end. Phew!
I too think it's possible that the money has fallen out at the back of the drawer you put it in and is lying behind the drawer somewhere. This happens often in my house because all the drawers are so full of things.

Rosehugger · 05/07/2022 09:36

Pray to St Anthony of Padua, patron saint of lost things. Can't hurt.

Hope you find it, OP 🙏

Freddiefan · 05/07/2022 09:37

That happened to me once and I couldn't find the cash. My mum had given it to me for spending money on holiday as we had two small children and money was tight.

We were on our way to the holiday and stopped for a picnic. There was the money in one of the plastic cups with a lid!

BellePeppa · 05/07/2022 09:40

Have you looked in your handbag?

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 05/07/2022 09:41

ZellyFitzgerald · 05/07/2022 07:07

And definitely check all your bins thoroughly before putting any rubbish out for collection!

Yup weird to say but you need to check bins thoroughly and first in such instances as they're time sensitive and you can't check after they've been taken away.

I'm sure even drunk you wouldn't have but it in the bin on purpose but putting the trash /junk somewhere safe and the money in the trash is totally possible when tired /drunk/distracted.

Electriq · 05/07/2022 09:41

In a box, or under a box/trinket box, hidden in plane sight, not in a drawer, but above a few drawers.

Beautiful3 · 05/07/2022 09:41

What ever you were wearing, check the pockets e.g. robe.

Electriq · 05/07/2022 09:42

Plain not plane

Silene · 05/07/2022 09:43

Ask St Anthony! he's brilliant. I do this too, I had hidden £1000 between the pages of a book. Forget looking for a while, or look for something totally different. My 'safe places' are famous in this family. If in the house it will turn up.
