Help - Lost $2400

marvellousmaple · 05/07/2022 03:52

As per my title, I have lost a serious amount of money. And no - not on the horses, I've just actually lost it , physically!
It was cash from an online sale and they definitely gave us the money. Last night ( I may have been a tad tipsy) and I decided I should put all that cash away and not leave it in the dining room on the table.
Woke up this morning and I have NO IDEA where I put it!
Before people accuse me of having dementia or something , I am known for this within the family and my mother is too.
Growing up, if you asked mum where something was and she said " oh, I put that in a safe place" well you knew you weren't going to see that for a while. She is now 88 and just starting to forget other things!
We are both completely capable in other ways - just exceptionally good hiders.
I really need to find this though as we need the money!
I have a memory of putting it in a drawer , but I've checked every drawer in the house, and then I thought maybe I'd put it between the leaves of some books. I own hundreds and hundreds of books. Here's hoping I didn't do that. DH will be home in an hour and I've searched everywhere.
HELP PLEASE. ANy ideas no matter how odd appreciated.
ETA - $2400 aussie - I havent checked the cash rates but roughly 1500 pounds!
Not exactly "oops dropped a tenner out of my bag running for the bus type thing.

Um know this isn't really an AIBU but am desperate for ideas.
I feel I am unreasonable for being so incapable!

Make it
YANBU - heaps of people lose things - it will turn up
YABU - you are a total git.

Bathroom cabinet? Pantry? Freezer?

SoupDragon · 05/07/2022 07:53

Interestingly, if one of my DC has lost something, I can usually find it within about 30 seconds of entering their room. If it's something I've put "in a safe place" though, i have no hope.

BMW6 · 05/07/2022 07:54

Have you checked your bed and pillows?

Longt · 05/07/2022 07:58

Inside a book? I hid $3000 (dollars are slimmer than pounds!!) inside a book on a bookcase before I went on honeymoon and didn’t find it for 2 years.

Fancylike · 05/07/2022 07:58

Check in shoes! Husband thought the cleaner had made off with his watch, when he himself had put it in his dress shoe and put that away. Thankly before any accusations were thrown around.

OhThatChicken · 05/07/2022 08:00

Do you have a bread bin? Could it be in the oven?

Tereseta · 05/07/2022 08:01

Have you pulled the drawers out? It might have slipped down the back of the drawer if it is full.

OldTinHat · 05/07/2022 08:01

I hide cash in a panty liner box in my knicker drawer (although I forgot I'd put it there the first time, cue the panic you're experiencing). Have you done something as bizarre??

Hope you find it soon.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 05/07/2022 08:10

Have you pulled the drawers out and looked in the 'carcass' of the chest of drawers etc ?

Have you looked at the underside of the top of the drawer ? Just in case the edge of the envelope/s got caught up and you can't see it in the drawer ?

Have you been through your handbag, your pockets, the car ? Calmly doing an inch by inch fingertip just about forensic search ?

ToffeeNotCoffee · 05/07/2022 08:14

Have you checked under the cushions of the sofa etc and under the actual sofa itself ?

Once you have eliminated the likely places, start looking in the unlikely places.

Sit down and draw in deep breaths to calm yourself then it might come to you where you put it. (Apparently the police use this technique to help people use lost keys)

Aaaagh! 2 years. At least it won't get spent!
Glad to know I'm not the only one to do something like this. It's a serious level of infuriation though - when you know you did it to yourself. I wouldn't be half as anxious if DH had "mislaid" it ( that's what I tell him when he says I've lost it). It's the sense of responsibility! Last thing I did like this was my engagement ring and we turned the house upside down for a weekend and then on the Monday night I picked up my night moisturiser that I keep on my bedside table when I got into bed to pop it on and there was the ring underneath the jar!. Why? I have no idea. Maybe we do have house fairies. I hope they give us our money back soon . Please!

That should be find lost keys not use lost keys !

MrsPartridgeKleio · 05/07/2022 08:16

Down the side of the loo? Could you have put it in your back pocket and they've fallen out as you took your trousers down?

SwanBuster · 05/07/2022 08:16

I would suggest you listen to the whole of the album 'A grand don't come free' by The Streets.

Mike Skinner is in a similar situation, and eventually finds it. It might inspire you!

marvellousmaple · 05/07/2022 08:17

Ta all. Will try and be calm. AM going to make dinner ( opposite side of the world to most of you guys). And breathe. I will update in the morning if there is any news. Thanks again for everyone's kind replies!

Oh and for future reference, have a drawer marked "somewhere safe" and anything that needs to go somewhere safe goes in there.

Glitteratitar · 05/07/2022 08:23

My dad did that with £10k in the mid 90s. He had a few beers, put it in a safe place, and never remembered what that safe place was. Parents sold and moved never having found the money.

Have you ever considered you might have ADHD?

I lose things all the time, just like this. It's a symptom of my ADHD (inattentive type, no hyperactivity).

Good luck with the search!

Have you tried on top of things? A high shelf or on top of a cupboard?

Can you start again by standing where the money was with something I. Your hand, and go out it somewhere safe, quickly. Where do you end up?

If you'd got distracted on the way to that place and just put it down quickly, where might that have been?

marvellousmaple · 05/07/2022 08:25

Hehe. Excellent plan @MrsPartridgeKleio !

I lost our only car key (it was a single key and not a bunch). It was missing for days. I pulled everything out and searched our waste bin - everywhere but couldn't find it. I then read tips on finding lost things snd one of them was a visualization technique - I thought back to the day - it was mother's day and I was cooking for MIL and my mother. I had a large cookbook out and my partner had thrown the key down on it on the book on our worktop and the book got closed up and put away in the bookshelf never to be taken down until the next cooking occasion but I found it by reenacting/tracing my exact steps.

Well, no I haven't but one of my sons was once diagnosed with it but then another doctor disagreed. I don't have any other symptoms. I think I'm just a good old fashioned scatter-brain at times. But I will remember the numberplate of your car , that you owned 10 years ago!

So need to cook dinner now - going old- fashioned with that too - chicken breast topped with pesto wrapped in bacon and covered in cheese and passata. What's not to love? Thanks again all.

I remember a thread last year where a member helped someone find a lost item. They then posted a thread offering to help others.

This thread

Maybe try contacting them for help?

Good luck!

No need to be so rude - She's forgetful - that doesn't mean she's messy! 😉

We have a Brownie living in our house a type of house elf, with a little door on the skirting board.
He always helps us find things if we give him sweets or chocolate- works every singe time, all the family use our Brownie now.
I know it sounds bonkers but it never fails.
