Help - Lost $2400

marvellousmaple · 05/07/2022 03:52

As per my title, I have lost a serious amount of money. And no - not on the horses, I've just actually lost it , physically!
It was cash from an online sale and they definitely gave us the money. Last night ( I may have been a tad tipsy) and I decided I should put all that cash away and not leave it in the dining room on the table.
Woke up this morning and I have NO IDEA where I put it!
Before people accuse me of having dementia or something , I am known for this within the family and my mother is too.
Growing up, if you asked mum where something was and she said " oh, I put that in a safe place" well you knew you weren't going to see that for a while. She is now 88 and just starting to forget other things!
We are both completely capable in other ways - just exceptionally good hiders.
I really need to find this though as we need the money!
I have a memory of putting it in a drawer , but I've checked every drawer in the house, and then I thought maybe I'd put it between the leaves of some books. I own hundreds and hundreds of books. Here's hoping I didn't do that. DH will be home in an hour and I've searched everywhere.
HELP PLEASE. ANy ideas no matter how odd appreciated.
ETA - $2400 aussie - I havent checked the cash rates but roughly 1500 pounds!
Not exactly "oops dropped a tenner out of my bag running for the bus type thing.

Um know this isn't really an AIBU but am desperate for ideas.
I feel I am unreasonable for being so incapable!

Make it
YANBU - heaps of people lose things - it will turn up
YABU - you are a total git.

Do you have a white home appliance with a "flap" you could have hidden it behind? A combi boiler, code pad for the burglar alarm, air conditioner. Something like that.

frazzledbutcalm · 05/07/2022 12:54

I remember number 3!! My daughters ipod! She was about 9/10, she’d had a friend around, later that night we couldn’t find the iPod anywhere. The only logical explanation was that it was in a bin or the friend had taken it - VERY unlikely as the friend was absolutely lovely and it just couldn’t have been. iPod turned up weeks later, it had somehow been pushed under my pile of clothes to be ironed which were on my landing floor 😳 absolutely can’t understand how it came to be there 🤷🏻‍♀️ Didn’t find it sooner as I didn’t get to the bottom of the ironing pile as more stuff kept getting piled on the top and the bottom stuff didn’t get ironed for weeks 😳 I now have a new ironing system in place 😉

Apparently it is supposed to help if you stand in a room and say out loud what you are looking for, @marvellousmaple. It sounds daft, I know, but it is supposed to focus your mind on what you are seeking.

jollygoose · 05/07/2022 13:11

I once hid a wad of cash inside a pack of playing cards found when moved house several years later.

bettytaghetti · 05/07/2022 13:43

Is anyone else thinking that all those house burglars that have been out of 'work' whilst we've all been home during covid are now reading this as some sort of refresher course in where to find things?! 😂

@marvellousmaple it hasn't left the house so it will turn up, but before you throw any rubbish out make sure you check thoroughly there first! Have you tried both standing where you were when you grabbed the envelopes and your DH heard you say we can't leave this here? Which way did you both go at that point? Good luck!

DoDisDenDoDat · 05/07/2022 13:48

It's in the kitchen cupboard - the one low down where you find the novelty biscuit cutters, potato ricer, ramekins, salad spinner and other crap you never use

gracelessladyhottramp · 05/07/2022 13:54

In a teapot

TitoMojito · 05/07/2022 13:59

Definitely time to start a systematic CSI grid search of your house

Thinkingblonde · 05/07/2022 14:08

I lost my engagement ring for three years. Tipped the house, garden, shed, greenhouse, car pockets upside down looking for it.
It was found when we emptied a big plastic bottle full of loose change out to count up up and bank. Sparkling away, among the coins was my ring.
So relieved as it was a replacement for my original engagement ring that slipped off my finger in the sea in Corfu. If anyone ever finds a yellow gold ring with built up shoulders leading to a white gold setting that looks like a daffodil with a diamond in the middle, it’s mine.
Try looking in the place you got the glass for your drink.
under books, did whatever you sold have instruction books or require documents like a still valid warranty? If so look at where they were kept, Ours are in a metal concertina box file thing, is it possible the envelope has been put inthe document holder when it’s been put back.

wonkylegs · 05/07/2022 14:27

My 'lost' passport was found in the back pages of a book I had been reading on holiday that had been put back on the bookshelf. I was starting to panic because I had to fly out to Kenya last minute for work (next day) and it wasn't where I thought it was... a very through search of the house ensued plus trying to recall what I might have had with me 6mths earlier on holiday.

BorsetshireBanality · 05/07/2022 14:28

What has been a life saver for me is keeping the door & car keys on a hook and always putting them back when I get home.

The first thing I would do is check the rubbish. My dippy aunt came to visit, kept her jewellery in a plastic bag, then threw that bag in the bin by mistake. Lucky she realised it was missing the day before the bin’s get emptied otherwise it would have been gone forever.

LolaJ87 · 05/07/2022 14:29

Is it tucked into a book or sitting with your takeaway menus possibly?

wonkylegs · 05/07/2022 14:30

When I lived in a shared house (all men) I used to hide valuable stuff in a sanitary towel box as I figured (rightly) that they generally were weirdly scared of them so wouldn't go near them.

Inertia · 05/07/2022 14:42

Do you keep your cutlery in the dining room drawers - have you looked under the cutlery trays?

Could you be misremembering the style of envelope? Have you searched every envelope/ package/ folder?

Do you have any kind of document storage box for passports etc ?

Have you checked the underside of the dining table, a la Taskmaster?

Inertia · 05/07/2022 14:48

Do you have a banking folder? You might have put it with your paying-in book.

A work bag or briefcase with lots of pockets?

As others have said, go back to the first place you looked and look at everything properly- lift things up, turn them over. I once lost a document at work- it was on my desk but flipped over. I was so fixated on the image of the document I was searching for that I totally screened out the ‘blank’ sheet of paper.

OneFrenchEgg · 05/07/2022 14:58

Was it bedtime when you decided? Did you take it upstairs with you and shove it in a sock drawer?

longtompot · 05/07/2022 16:48

Do you keep going to one particular place to look? If so, I'm pretty sure it will be very close to of not in that place. Hope you find it soon. It's so frustrating when this happens, though I've not managed to lose that amount of money. Yet!

ButtonMoonLoon · 05/07/2022 19:35

Ok this might be a bit of a left field suggestion, but have you considered getting pissed again to see if your brain remembers that way?

marvellousmaple · 06/07/2022 00:15

MistressoftheDarkSide · 05/07/2022 08:52

I sympathise OP it’s a horrible feeling when this happens… we’re all pack rats in our house too, so the possibilities are endless….

And I’m going to sound absolutely batshit now, but reading the thread I kept “seeing” some sort of blue glass ornament in my head? Like a smooth bowl or vase? I think I must be half remembering a similar experience of losing something myself and it turned up in or near something like that…. Which is the most logical explanation obviously….. or I’m having the most random psychic experience ever …… 😂

Quick update. Still no luck😭

But after I read the thread back I realised that BEFORE I moved it from the dining room it was next to this !!!!! Cue the x-files music. You really are the mistress of the dark side! Any ideas where I put it afterwards? 😄

Underneath the radio behind everything else? Or underneath something else outvof view on your photo?

KatySp · 06/07/2022 00:25

I think a PP mentioned this but if you get back to the state you were when you lost it then you may remember. I think you need to get a bit tipsy again.

Snaketime · 05/07/2022 09:57

It sounds more like dyspraxia to me tbh op. Are you also a bit clumsy?
My DH is dyspraxic and makes everything disappear, he doesn't even have to move to do it. Sometimes he doesn't even remember touching the thing he lost let alone where he put it.

Stop looking in the more usual places you would put money and think about the most ridiculous ppace you could put money in your house, that's what I have to do if my DH moves anything.

Well yes I am clumsy. Constantly fall over. Trip over fences, drop things. I have very well-coordinated children though. It's some kind of miracle. I'm too old to bother worrying about it now though. I've made it to 50 like this.
I would like this damn money though!!!
Thanks again all for your thoughts.
Promise I will update if I ever ( I mean when ) I find it. 😀

My bet is that DH has moved it and hidden it to wind you up 😀

Mammyloveswine · 06/07/2022 00:30

Pray to st anthony

marvellousmaple · 06/07/2022 00:35

I don't think DH has it as he has been looking everywhere too and gone around the house and lifted all the mattresses. I said "I wouldn't put it there!" But he just gave me sideeye and kept checking mattresses. Quite rude really! You'd think I make a habit of this.
I will go and read that other thread that was linked now.
BTW - Does anyone want a puppy? Totally unrelated but I have 7 here that are driving my crazy!. Maybe they ate it! Woudn't be surprised. They ate 2 squares of paper towel the other day in the time it took me to turn around and back again.
