Help - Lost $2400

marvellousmaple · 05/07/2022 03:52

As per my title, I have lost a serious amount of money. And no - not on the horses, I've just actually lost it , physically!
It was cash from an online sale and they definitely gave us the money. Last night ( I may have been a tad tipsy) and I decided I should put all that cash away and not leave it in the dining room on the table.
Woke up this morning and I have NO IDEA where I put it!
Before people accuse me of having dementia or something , I am known for this within the family and my mother is too.
Growing up, if you asked mum where something was and she said " oh, I put that in a safe place" well you knew you weren't going to see that for a while. She is now 88 and just starting to forget other things!
We are both completely capable in other ways - just exceptionally good hiders.
I really need to find this though as we need the money!
I have a memory of putting it in a drawer , but I've checked every drawer in the house, and then I thought maybe I'd put it between the leaves of some books. I own hundreds and hundreds of books. Here's hoping I didn't do that. DH will be home in an hour and I've searched everywhere.
HELP PLEASE. ANy ideas no matter how odd appreciated.
ETA - $2400 aussie - I havent checked the cash rates but roughly 1500 pounds!
Not exactly "oops dropped a tenner out of my bag running for the bus type thing.

Um know this isn't really an AIBU but am desperate for ideas.
I feel I am unreasonable for being so incapable!

Make it
YANBU - heaps of people lose things - it will turn up
YABU - you are a total git.

Washing powder box or in the dirty laundry pile? Good luck! It’s a sickening feeling, I know. But now you‘ve voiced your concerns, it’ll probably turn up in no time. Also, I agree, a quick prayer to St Anthony often helps!

MessedOfTimes · 05/07/2022 06:33

Or did you put it in your car, or somewhere not technically in the house? Laptop bag? With the Chrissy decorations? 😂

MermaidMummy06 · 05/07/2022 06:44

My DM is like this, minus the tipsy bit. I've had to help her find stashed $$ many times. Always found, in odd places.

I start at one end of her house and go through each room & check every obvious place it could have been staahed. If that fails I start again & search everything thoroughly. Drawers, behind the drawers, pockets, pillowcases, shoes containers, books, everywhere. No 'I wouldn't put it there....' because that's where you'll find it! It takes time but is better than a panicked search.

mnnewbie111 · 05/07/2022 06:47

I do this with everything! I keep being told I have ADHD but I think I've just got a tiny part of my brain missing. Good luck, if you're like me you'll find it, maybe next week tho.

MaitlandGirl · 05/07/2022 06:50

In your pillowcase?

GoldPig · 05/07/2022 06:51

Has the dog ‘helped’? In the dog bed? Buried in the garden?!

wheresmymojo · 05/07/2022 06:51

There's actual scientific research that backs up what people are saying about getting tipsy again.

You're much more likely to recall the memory that way.

worriedUserName · 05/07/2022 07:04

Is it in an envelope?

Under sofa
Under mattress
Check in microwave or oven
Wardrobe

ZellyFitzgerald · 05/07/2022 07:06

My FIL did this years ago with quite a lot of cash.

It wasn't found until the bathroom got renovated and the builders found a bag of money tucked under the bath....

Maybe check your bathroom?

ZellyFitzgerald · 05/07/2022 07:07

And definitely check all your bins thoroughly before putting any rubbish out for collection!

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 05/07/2022 07:11

Top of kitchen cabinets, stored in pots and pans, in shoes….. in pillow case….

Unfortunately your going to have to go through every inch of every room, going through every item… you have…

good luck.

VladmirsPoutine · 05/07/2022 07:13

Has anyone else but you or your husband been in your home between you receiving the money and seemingly losing it? As long as you know it's there somewhere must give you peace of mind.

LaurieFairyCake · 05/07/2022 07:15

Freezer ?

mrpopperspenguinbiscuits · 05/07/2022 07:16

This happened to me. Took me three days to find.
It was between folded clothes in the drawer.

FrankGrillosFloof · 05/07/2022 07:18

I can think back through a situation like this 100 times and nothing comes to me. I give up all hope and then I’ll calmly be telling a friend about it - just to tell the story, not trying to remember as I’ve given up all hope - and as I talk through it, something comes to me out of the blue like a I stuck it in X or I put it on top of Y.

I think separating yourself from the panic and the act of looking takes the focus from your conscious mind and allows your subconscious to kick in, which is where the secret detail is stored.

Longdistance · 05/07/2022 07:22

If dh was there, are you sure you didn’t give it to him?

Floella22 · 05/07/2022 07:27

As above Pray to St Anthony.
My ds once put his passport in a safe place and lost it.
He had to order a new one and then found his old passport in a video box!

When I put something in a safe place now I take a photo on my phone.

Grimed · 05/07/2022 07:31

In between books on a shelf?

marvellousmaple · 05/07/2022 07:42

You guys are great! Still looking. Yes DH was only one here. Then we all went to bed and I got up this morning and went to the drawer I was sure I'd put it in and it was gone!. DH didn't see where I put it, just heard me say" we can't leave this here" . It was in an envelope. 2 in fact. I'm going to have an early night tonight and hope it comes to me in the morning. As a pp says it has to be here somewhere right?
Thanks for all your ideas. It's so weird that my mum and I are the same with putting things in "safe places". Promise we are quite normal in other ways. I couldn't hide something this well if I was trying!!!

Start by checking bins and recycling etc. That way you can make sure it's not about to get thrown out and it must be in the house.

What are we talking about in terms of notes - is it loads of $50s or a few $500s?

Could you have put it behind books on a bookshelf? Under the fridge or washing machine? Inside the vacuum cleaner (if it has one of those clear bits for collecting the dust)? In a pipe somewhere?

It will turn up. Probably somewhere you've already looked. i do this all the time.

advice given to me once was "go back to where you thought it was and look properly this time". It is right embarrassingly often.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2022 07:49

On the plus side, you know it has to be in the house as it hasn't had chance to be taken anywhere yet!

Bizarrely the buyer could only get $20 notes out of the automatic teller! So it's a very thick wad. Hence the 2 envelopes!.
Bloody hell. I am such a doofus. How do you lose that?

This worked for my DS's lost passport recently. Massive panic, but it turned out to be much better hidden in the spot I tried first all along.
