To wonder why Covid is so rampant atm?

As title really, I know so many people that have it at the moment and cases are really high here, which is odd as we've had nothing but glorious sunshine here for the last couple of months really.

I thought it was a bit more dormant in the summer, especially if people are outside more in terms of bars/ restaurants etc which they certainly have been here due to the weather. Is it because the children haven't broken up yet I wonder?

Are cases high in your area atm?

Butteryflakycrust83 · 27/06/2022 14:24

Why?

No masks.

No measures to prevent spread.

No testing unless CEV.

No mandatory isolation.

Private tests are expensive for many.

Most people have given up giving a shit about each other and want to just crack on with whatever suits their own personal circumstances.

Oddbutnotodd · 27/06/2022 14:28

As above. No testing. No social distancing. People don’t care anymore.
There was a thread last week where the op was being encouraged to travel long haul despite testing positive.
Free testing no longer available .
Latest variant is more transmissible.

CalistoNoSolo · 27/06/2022 14:30

It's endemic and there are no measures to stop it. Hopefully it will have run out of steam by winter, and any new strains are weak.

Marlaah · 27/06/2022 14:31

Covid isn’t seasonal. We had high levels last July. There have been new surges every 3-4 months regardless of the season. As pp said the govt dropped mitigations and the attitude is ‘we need to get back to normal’.

Suzi888 · 27/06/2022 14:32

Wales or England?
Still dishing out £500 for uploading your own LFT result here. 🙄

Yodaisawally · 27/06/2022 14:33

Mass socialising, RTO, end of testing, no masks / distancing.

Thank god.

bonkersbirdie · 27/06/2022 14:34

I've got it at the moment. Feeling rubbish so took an old lft. Don't know why I was surprised to see it was positive.

Uploaded it and hiding out on the sofa feeling grim.

DashboardConfessional · 27/06/2022 14:34

I've got it for the first time and I went to my first gigs in 2 years this week. Big ones. I will have come into contact with thousands of people in queues, seated near me, in the service station on the way.

ShirleyPhallus · 27/06/2022 14:34

There is nothing wrong with people wanting their lives back. For the majority, this illness is very mild and has no real impact if it’s circulating.

Takingabreakagain · 27/06/2022 14:37

Is it rampant? Or is there an just increase which is proportionally high and the media are again causing worry and hype

lentiIsoup · 27/06/2022 14:37

Where are you seeing the stats? They're no longer published in the main areas of the newspaper I read.

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/06/2022 14:38

Judging by a lot of threads on MN it's because too many people don't care and aren't prepared to make the slightest sacrifice for the benefit of others.
I'm just getting over it and have avoided spreading it to other people. I had to cancel a hospital appointment today but could have gone ahead and pretended I was OK. I worry about people like my daughter who is CEV and would be more seriously affected.

DangerNoodles · 27/06/2022 14:40

Sadly, caring about other people is a luxury many people can't afford right now. Paying for tests and time off work is enough to tip many over the edge financially.

“The slightest sacrifice”. You don’t think nearly 2 years of lockdowns was a sacrifice to most people?

ItsSnowJokes · 27/06/2022 14:42

Its rife as everyone seems to ignore it and just go about infecting everyone else. No testing doesn't help and people seem to want to be blind to it, so if they don't know they have it via testing they can pretend they don't have it and it doesn't restrict their life.

TheKeatingFive · 27/06/2022 14:43

We're in another wave. Surge then retreat, repeat, that's the pattern. Get used to it.

Well aren't you a joy to spread it around like that!

It's not about people 'not caring' or being 'selfish'.

People have no choice but to go to work even if they're positive. Children must be in school after day three (as must their teachers). And of course all those people in work and school with covid have to get there, often on busy public transport. It's not surprising that they think if it's ok to do that, it's ok to do fun stuff too - gigs, festivals, fairs, whatever.

As for there being no mitigations in place, one word: Vaccines.

If you're not testing, how can you know you've got it to be able ignore it? Doesn't make sense.

There's a cost of living crisis. People cannot afford upwards of £15 a week to regularly test their families. Unless you think that covid testing is more important than eating?

Cooroo · 27/06/2022 14:47

Like dashboard confessional I have just got it and went to first gig and cinema last week - I'm assuming she meant she'd picked it up at a gig, not that she'd gone to 2 knowing she had it!

Makes you wonder if our vaccines did anything at all....

Nice, and incorrect. I caught it after the second gig, tested positive 6 days later. Was that not clear?!

Hope that make you feel pretty fucking good about yourself for a few seconds though.

Ah ok, if that is the case I sincerely apologise as I read it that they had it and went to 2 big concerts regardless.

I do apologise and I will ask for my comment to be deleted as that is unfair of me.

This.

We are as vaccinated as we are going to be, as a nation - more boosters notwithstanding.

Now is the time to let it run - summer months it has proven to be less of an issue. We need it to have weakened itself by winter. Letting it run, giving it a lot to 'eat' should do that (usual caveats).

This is what we have been told will happen, it's not a surprise, or it shouldn't be!
