To wonder why Covid is so rampant atm?

As title really, I know so many people that have it at the moment and cases are really high here, which is odd as we've had nothing but glorious sunshine here for the last couple of months really.

I thought it was a bit more dormant in the summer, especially if people are outside more in terms of bars/ restaurants etc which they certainly have been here due to the weather. Is it because the children haven't broken up yet I wonder?

Are cases high in your area atm?

Yep, any positive news story - even how effective vaccines are for example, she finds a way to rubbish them and predict more doom. Awful scientist.

Got very used to being on the telly, that one.

I'm not sure wearing a mask is really going to help much if you have one of the super transmissible variants and you're in an unventilated classroom for eight hours a day, either.

I'm not saying masks aren't useful, but they're not a magic charm against catching/transmitting covid, either. I certainly wouldn't rely on one to protect others if I knew I had covid and I was going to be in an enclosed space with others for a long period of time.

Thing is, millions of people have no choice but to do that.

My biggest worry about us experiencing these huge waves if infections is what is this doing to those who are infected multiple times? I have friends who are on their fourth or fifth round that they know of, that’s not normal especially when they’re boosted and not exactly out raving on the weekends.

Also hearing of lots of people with ongoing issues such as mouths full of ulcers, extreme fatigue, headaches, head colds, coughs that don’t go away, gastro problems and yet testing negative, dc in nursery constantly having temperatures and sickness bugs seemingly weekly. If I didn’t know any better I’d say our immune systems are kaput. All of that in the summer months. What on Earth will BA.6 or BA.7 bring next, these variants seem to get slightly worse each time?!

I'm currently on my sixth round. I'm CEV/immunosuppressed so every time I catch it I do worry that this could be the time it goes really pear shaped, but what can I do? I can't stop living and I can't stop DH and DD living either. They have to go to work, we all have to use public transport.

So far I've had no lasting issues that I know of. But even taking into consideration that this might be something which could happen after this bout or the next, there's not much I can do about it. And tbh, after two and a half years of hiding myself away and having two MH crises, I couldn't cope with isolating myself for months on end again anyway. Even if I did, DH and DD are out in the world so it would be pointless anyway!

Biker47 · 28/06/2022 08:47

Had it last week, mildly, still went about my life as normal, unless I'm keeled over with it I'm not letting it stop me doing things.

@DizzyWhoreI8O4 you have had covid 6 times ? 🙀🥲

DizzyWhoreI8O4 · 28/06/2022 10:05

@Blondeshavemorefun yes! I've had five jabs too. But I'm immunosuppressed, so the vaccines don't work so well at preventing me catching it. However they seem to work a charm at preventing serious illness, thank goodness. I've only ever been really unwell twice and neither time was I ill enough to need hospital or anything.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/06/2022 10:10

Bless you 💐

and dh and I I haven’t had but our 4yr did who obv had kisses and cuddles

Of course that could well be because of all those months when we were forbidden to mix with others.

HesterShaw1 · 28/06/2022 10:15

As for it getting worse each time, plenty of people would argue with that. Look at the hospital admissions for a start.

Saracen · 28/06/2022 10:16

Haven't RTFT so maybe someone else has said this:

Tim Spector of the ZOE Covid study is always good for explaining what's going on, and presenting the ONS figures. ONS does random samples of the general public to see how widespread Covid is, so their figures don't rely on people choosing to test/report or whatever.

Here's the latest from him: It's only 11 minutes. so worth watching if you want to understand it.

I can't believe that people are still trotting out the 'selfish' and 'nobody cares' line.

Let me guess. These folks are from the 'laptop class' WFH so very 'productively' and who, like so many on MM, consider their fellow humans other than their 'DH' and 'DC' mainly as sources of annoyance and of course 'germs'. The comment about parties being 'germ soup' is typical. These people quite enjoyed lockdown, whether they'll admit it or not, and are nostalgic for being able to wag fingers at Gemma from number 14 for having guests over for coffee.

If you want to lock yourself up to avoid a virus which is mild for the majority of people and which is so contagious that nothing short of a full lockdown, if that, is going to make any inroads, suit yourself. But maybe look a little closer to your comfy home before calling others 'selfish' for simply going about their lives.

Yep 100%⬆️

I work in retail. Don't get paid if I'm off sick so unless I am too ill to work I'll be in.

I'm not testing either. Don't have any tests and not prepared to pay for some. So I will be working unless I can't 🤷‍♀️

And I'm going out if I want to. More likely to catch something at work than out and about tbh.

BeenToldComputerSaysNo · 28/06/2022 11:55

Some people's circumstances make it difficult to fully isolate when positive. Some people won't drop any activities if positive, choosing to force others to live with the direct consequence of their action. Some will use the reason that someone could catch it from someone else instead. We could all go out and do deliberately harmful things as there's bound to be someone else that would do it anyway. In our defence we could say it's a risk people take.

Realistically, people like you who simply aren't in a position to test when they have symptoms, let alone when asymptomatic, are extremely common. It simply isn't sustainable to expect ordinary people to regularly test for a disease that many of them will find extremely mild, when the outcome will be detriment to themselves, for very long. Frankly it wasn't sustainable to expect it for as long as the law required it, but it certainly wouldn't be possible now.

ApplesandBunions I like the cut of your jib.

TheseAreMyGoodPants · 28/06/2022 14:13

My partner and I have just tested positive, after managing to avoid it for over two years! The only places we've been recently are at hospital being induced. Certainly no socialising!

Thankfully we both only have mild symptoms. Feels like a cold.

TheKeatingFive · 28/06/2022 14:26

Have you avoided socialising for over two years?

Of course that could well be because of all those months when we were forbidden to mix with others.

That’s a crap argument to be honest. We’ve all been mixing for well over a year now. Also inbetween lockdowns too, they didn’t last two years straight. Although some of us were in tiers for longer. Kids were back in school earlier than that. Plenty also mixed through lockdowns.

I’ve been to gigs, social occasions, nights out, work in a hospital, on public transport and holidays. Plenty of times for me to catch illness. I’ve caught one in the last 3 years. I’ve not had covid but I do know lots that have that seem to have gotten more sick easily since then and/or prolonged symptoms post covid

Its new we really don’t know what’s going to happen and what damage it’s doing long term to our health. But we can’t acknowledge that these days without being accused of scaremongering or being dramatic. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be concerned and watchful by such a novel illness.
