To wonder why Covid is so rampant atm?

As title really, I know so many people that have it at the moment and cases are really high here, which is odd as we've had nothing but glorious sunshine here for the last couple of months really.

I thought it was a bit more dormant in the summer, especially if people are outside more in terms of bars/ restaurants etc which they certainly have been here due to the weather. Is it because the children haven't broken up yet I wonder?

Are cases high in your area atm?

@DizzyWhoreI8O4 you don't think it was selfish to go to a cinema with a cough?

Jaxhog · 27/06/2022 16:07

Because too many people aren't taking even the smallest, slightest precautions. Like wearing masks in crowded places, or staying away from others when they're ill, or covering their faces when coughing. Basic things we should be doing anyway.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 27/06/2022 16:08

At the start of the vaccines, this very much was the claim.
Didn't last long though.

Yeah! How dare they not immediately know everything about a novel virus.

Such very short memories and extremely high expectations some people have. We lived through a real time bloody miracle in vaccine research and look - this is what some people choose to remember! FFS!

SexyLittleNosferatu · 27/06/2022 16:08

Oh give it upppppp with the "it's people like you" bullshit. Honestly, it was utter wankery in 2020 and it's just laughable at this stage.

Viruses circulate and people pass them on by living their day-to-day mundane lives. This virus is no different. You can't blame people for it anymore than you could try to blame someone for giving you a cold in 2018. I do have to question the intelligence of people who bought into the idea that you can "control" a virus and still hang onto it 2 and a bit years later.

I think you don't know why she had a cough so you have no right to call her selfish. A cough isn't always covid.

People can't stay away from others when they're ill in many cases.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 27/06/2022 16:10

Don't think it's rampant in my area. March/April I knew dozens with it. I haven't known anyone catch it for weeks now. Since April probably.
Maybe it's high in London?
The figures certainly don't make it look rampant.

Christ, calm down 🙄

This isn't what I "choose to remember". I can remember more than one thing at once. I wasn't criticising anyone. I wasn't complaining. I was just saying how it was.

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 27/06/2022 16:10

Dizzy Because she was coughing, sneezing and retching so badly for two hours that when she stopped at one point I looked over to check she hadn't dropped dead.

She either had an extremely heavy cold or she had covid. Either way she knew she was ill and she knew sitting in a cinema around people puts others at risk of also being ill. How is that not selfish?

Samcro · 27/06/2022 16:11

how much do tests cost?

Yes, plenty of people have coughs for reasons other than covid. Expecting people who cough due to conditions like asthma, bronchitis etc to avoid going to the cinema for an open ended period purely so you can feel more comfortable is selfish as fuck.

Dis626 · 27/06/2022 16:12

No social distancing, no testing, no masks, no self-isolation, lots of mass gatherings etc etc. Covid isn't going anywhere unfortunately.

Anothernamechangeplease · 27/06/2022 16:13

It's certainly rampant where I am, and a lot of people are getting quite sick with it. I've just had it myself and did isolate, even though I was lucky enough not to be properly ill with it. Most of the people I know who are testing positive are isolating as far as possible. However, I'm sure that there are whole swathes of the population who can't be arsed to test, and I imagine that there will also be quite a lot who would willingly test to protect others but can't afford to actually buy the tests which the government have chosen to stop funding in the midst of a cost of living crisis. So it's no surprise really that the numbers are surging!

Did you always, without fail, stay at home when you had a heavy cold prior to covid?

Perhaps she's had covid recently and the cough hasn't gone yet. After one of my infections I was coughing for about four weeks. I daresay people thought I was 'selfish' too for going about my business.

One of the absolute worst things about the pandemic is all those who have sat in judgement of others.

Precisely.

If you're so concerned, perhaps it's you who should be avoiding the cinema.

And also, if you were so worried she had covid, why didn't you leave?

SpiderinaWingMirror · 27/06/2022 16:16

Lots of people going to large scale events.
Vaccine wearing off for most.
New variants.

You don't know that. One of my former colleagues had a chronic cough due to an underlying health issue that sounded horrendous but wasn't infectious in any way. I went for a coffee with her a few months ago and couldn't believe the number of dirty looks she got when she coughed.

Yes, there are people who are selfish and antisocial, but there are also people with health conditions that are not at all dangerous to anyone else. You shouldn't assume either way.

CallOnMe · 27/06/2022 16:16

Testing is a big issue now we have to pay to test.

I know not everyone chose to test before but no one I know is now testing unless they have symptoms (and sometimes not even then) and I believe once you’ve got the symptoms you’ve already had it and been spreading it for a couple of days.

I work with vulnerable kids and we were all very strict at testing when they were free at least once a week even if we didn’t have symptoms but we can’t afford to keep doing that.

This was how I was 4 weeks after covid. Turned out I had a secondary lung infection. I'm sure if she knew she was contagious she wouldn't be publicly coughing her guts up! Chances are she knows she is no longer infectious.

bellabasset · 27/06/2022 16:21

@Samcro £3 a test in my local chemist when I popped in to get a box as I needed 3 clear days before a medical procedure. I said as I was in a vulnerable group I got them free but you have to do that online.

It's the other people are traffic, I am sitting in traffic mentality. The conveniently timed dripfeed of other symptoms did nothing to change that picture either.

LadyWhistledownsPen · 27/06/2022 16:24

I'm just getting over it now. No idea where I got it from as I only commute to work and back once a week and I WFH the rest of the time. Suspect it may have come from an exercise class or my kids. It's floored me but I suspect it would be worse if I hadn't been vaccinated. I've used common sense and I've not been out anywhere until today when I've tested negative and done my five days isolation. Even though that meant I couldn't be with my 4 year old when he was rushed to hospital with appendicitis at the weekend. I've also got a 20 month old so I've just had to get on with it. It's here to stay and we need to learn to live with it. We can't spend our lives afraid of it.

Oestrogelsmuggler · 27/06/2022 16:24

It's like asking "why are people still getting colds even though it's summer?" It's a virus. It will spread. When you get it you'll feel unwell for a few days, then it will go away.

Some people have persistent long term coughs that are not contagious (but others wouldn't know that) Should they stay home so they don't get judged?

kitcat15 · 27/06/2022 16:29

I've just got back from Glastonbury...had cough and sore throat last couple of days there....I've tested negative today bit 3 others I went with have tested positive ....again very mild symptoms ...a bit tired....minor stomach ache....it will definitely ramp up after all the summer festivals .... to me its worth the risk....I've had 4 jabs and I've had covid before so if I get it again should hopefully be OK
