Flight to Rwanda

1000 replies

lbab1702 · 14/06/2022 19:18

I’d love to get a flight to Rwanda. Beautiful country and people ( I’ve been there before) but I don’t understand why refugees to the U.K. should go there.

@DuncinToffee

You can add Rwanda’s opposition party to that list.

“Asylum seekers sent from the UK to Rwanda will flee the African country and risk death by using people-smuggling gangs to reach Europe again, the country’s opposition leader has said.”
“The Government of Rwanda knows that these refugees will not stay in Rwanda,” Ms Ingabire told i. “This is why they accepted this deal.”

Roussette · 18/06/2022 12:01

There was an article about the very many refugees who had been sent from Libya to Rwanda.
They had three choices

  1. Go to another country

  2. Return to your own country

  3. Stay in Rwanda

No one, but no-one chose option 2 or 3.

It is a flawed scheme designed to appease the worst of this country before the by-elections.
Luckily, BJ buggering off to Kyiv when he should've been up north giving a speech to 400 about levelling up, will probably seal the party's fate in Wakefield

Agree it is a beautiful country - but I chose to go there. These people did not and it is abhorrent that we are doing this. It honestly makes me ashamed to be British. And please don't come at me with the 'we're full' argument, it's bollocks.

What's bollocks about the we are full argument?

"Whiteness must be the best acid trip"

What a bigoted statement. Quite ironic when the issue of racism always comes up on these threads. I'm white and I certainly don't take acid. Even figuratively speaking, the comment is an insult - and racist.

All well and good when that poem is applied to the Crown's subjects. However, I was referring to the Crown not interfering in politics, but you knew that.

Because we're not?

And pleae don't talk about NHS waiting lists, dentists, school class sizes etc. That is down to successive conservative Government cutting services to the bone.
We have room. We just need the Government to get it's act together and get rid of the likes of PPatel. Some new capable Ministers would help.

BewareTheLibrarians · 18/06/2022 12:21

I think people might be referring things like this below, as well as the effects of austerity policies that have left communities underfunded and struggling. Do we have infinite space and resources? Of course not. But the government could be doing a lot better to improve the standard of living, housing, education budgets etc. Turning the frustration about that onto a small (on the population level) group of people is not the solution.

“25 million dwellings in the UK. 7.5 million aren't owner occupied. 772,000 are 2nd homes. 6.75 million homes owned by landlords. Over 600,000 homes are currently vacant. But yeah, folk arriving in a boat are preventing home ownership and affordable housing.”

Apologoes for the Twitter link but it’s backed up by housing charities’ research.

Also I should add this is 600,000 despite the number of people we’ve already had come in to the country.

JassyRadlett · 18/06/2022 12:23

Genuine asylum seekers should be seeking refuge in the first safe country they get to As the UK is a small island off the coast of France, that's not the UK.

Well, no, since we pulled out of Dublin III there's no objective basis for that 'should'.

newnamethanks · 18/06/2022 12:49

It's pleasant enough, thank you for asking. My idyll, annoyingly, is frequently interrupted by harsh reality. Priti Parel, posturing and preening, Mr Johnson spouting his version of truth which bears little resemblance to anything most of us recognise, Tory bowers and scrapers attempting to defend the indefensible and losing their temper when anyone mentions the B word in any but the most glowing terms. And watching desperate people risk their lives and be punished for it as this government criminalises them. The hypocrisy is hard to tolerate. We shouldn't tolerate it. Anyway, our PM is away saving the world from war and arranging next year's Eurovision so you'll have to excuse me, I want to see him standing in front of some flags on the lunchtime news.

JassyRadlett · 18/06/2022 13:23

However, I was referring to the Crown not interfering in politics, but you knew that.

Except he isn't (yet) the monarch. He has no constitutional role other than what is delegated to him by the monarch (in the same way as the duties of a Prime Minister and his government are technically bestowed by the monarch.)

lollipoprainbow · 18/06/2022 13:54

Charles should never have proffered his opinion

True, the biggest ivory tower offender so far.

lollipoprainbow · 18/06/2022 14:01

Where are all these magical 600k empty homes?? And why are people on housing registers waiting up to six years to get one of that's the case ??

BewareTheLibrarians · 18/06/2022 14:07

@lollipoprainbow A simple Google could have helped you there. Here’s info from the government (just in case you want to accuse them of being whinging lefty liberals too!)

“Statistics published by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) put the number of empty homes in England in October 2019 at 648,114. This represents a 2.2% increase on the previous year’s total. Of the 648,114, 225,845 were classed as long-term empty properties (empty for longer than six months).”

commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/sn03012/

The second point about people on housing lists is something you’d have to ask the government I’m afraid. Not good though, is it?

If you think this country's not bursting at the seams, you are talking with emotion, rather than fact. Of course we are full. If the likes of you had your way, there will be a never ending trickle of ppl coming in, without even facing any checks. You can't reason with lefties. Everything is fairytale living.

How do you feel about the fact that net migration has increased under this government?

(and what objective definition are you using for 'full'?)

BewareTheLibrarians · 18/06/2022 18:16

@JassyRadlett Good luck with that, apparently properly sourcing your info is a woke lefty liberal thing. 😁

Some general thoughts on this thread.

  1. When I’ve corrected misinformation and outright lies, I’ve been able to post evidence/links as a correction, sometimes even from the government’s own published info. The other “side” hasn’t been able to do that and it’s fucking annoying. This isn’t just a place to come and spit your vitriol about a topic you don’t really know anything about. It’s not a free forum for xenophobic comments. Discuss things with facts, not just making shit up, and both sides might find some common ground.

  2. to deal with that fucking annoyance, I started upping my donations to a charity that supports asylum seekers and refugees every time anyone posted a shitty, uninformed, un-evidenced comment, every time someone posted “but they’re all economic migrants!” every single time.

I’ve had to stop now as I’m not rich and I won’t be able to eat next month if I don’t, but there are some asylum seekers who will have a bit better start to their life in the UK thanks to every shitty comment ❤️

Roussette · 18/06/2022 18:44

Well done Beware!

Posters swoop in and out posting bollocks like the country's full and then disappear
It's like a BJ three word slogan
Maybe they should ask the government why resources have been cut to the bone hence the feeling 'its full'

It ain't

atomsgirl · 18/06/2022 18:45

Some general thoughts on this thread.

Some people think illegal immigration is great.

Some people think illegal immigration isn't great. And for me, it's a really not a great thing at all. There are too many bad consequences arising from it.

DuncinToffee · 18/06/2022 18:48

It's not 'illegal immigration'

Which rights do you think we should get rid of?

DuncinToffee · 18/06/2022 18:49

Four asylum seeker plans that don't involve deportations to Rwanda

  1. Large scale resettlement schemes in the UK
  2. Improving the processing of asylum claims
  3. Better Home Office resources
  4. Have a returns deal with the EU

@DuncinToffee How many people is it acceptable to die in the channel?

The people are safe in France - there is no war or torture there.

If this government had any interest in stopping people from dying in the channel, it would not be demanding 20% staffing cuts in the National Crime Agency whose job it is to target the trafficking gangs.
