Are we fat bastards? How much do you spend on a takeaway?

I was interested to see on another thread that some people were horrified at a poster spending £40 on a takeaway and suggested she must be ordering an awful lot.
We had a Chinese last night for 4 people and it was £85- there was some left over for lunch today.
this was our order;
1x King Prawns Mushroom in Oyster Sauce 1x King Prawns Hong Kong Style Sweet & Sour Sauce 1x Aubergine Black Bean Sauce 1x King Prawns Satay 1x King Prawn Ginger & Spring Onion Sauce 1x Quarter Crispy Aromatic Duck 1x Mixed Appetisers for 2 1x Chicken & Prawns in Yellow Bean Sauce * 3x Egg Fried Rice (300g) 1x Special Chow Mein 1x King Prawns Fried Rice

so how much do you spend/order for 4 people and are we fat bastards?

For 2 of us we usually spend about £35 on an Indian takeaway, we go big on the sundries and the sides!

Sleepingsatellite1 · 12/06/2022 21:27

About £50/60 for 2 of us so we’re even fatter bastards, in our defensive it is expensive round here (Chinese takeout that is)

daisyjgrey · 12/06/2022 21:27

I mean, I don't think "fat bastards" is probably a term I'd willingly use, but I'll join in.

We had Chinese - 2 of us - last week and it was £24, delivered. So if you double it for twice the amount of people and maybe add another tenner for sharing fripperies that's £60.

£85 for 4 of you is quite a lot for an eat in bog standard takeaway I reckon.

TinaYouFatLard · 12/06/2022 21:29

So many prawns!

We spend about that on a Chinese takeaway.

Coughee · 12/06/2022 21:29

We would order one main and usually 3 rice's between 4. Some prawn crackers too. Sometimes spring rolls or prawn toast - 1 lot between 4 of us.

Our mains here are very generous though. I'm a greedy cow and usually can't eat it all.

I suppose its hard to know without seeing portion size but yours reads as if you ordered maybe 2 mains each which seems a lot.

SofiaSoFar · 12/06/2022 21:29

That sounds like an awful lot of food even for 4 hungry adults.

Smartiepants79 · 12/06/2022 21:29

£20+ Pounds per person does seem like quite a lot. We would probably have either the appetisers OR the duck, not both and maybe less rice/noodles.
think we maybe spend 3
£35 pounds for 2 of us at the most.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 12/06/2022 21:29

You ordered
7 mains
4 people worth of starters
4 fried rice

for 4 people?

I’m not a fan of take away but we do eat out so I can’t give you a comparison.

Paq · 12/06/2022 21:30

Well, are you actually fat?

SardineJam · 12/06/2022 21:30

No more than £30 at a push, for me and DH, generally leftovers for the next day

ohidoliketobe · 12/06/2022 21:31

For chinese between 2 we get: mixed starter, salt and chilli chips, a main and a rice or noodle dish. About £25-30.

Footbelle · 12/06/2022 21:31

Am I reading that right? You had
9 main courses
2 appetisers
3 sides

For 4 people?

JennyForeigner · 12/06/2022 21:31

YANBU for making me hungry.

iGetItHonestly · 12/06/2022 21:31

That seems like a huge amount of food for 4 people! It looks like at least 7 main dishes + appetizers + sides?

We order for 3 - 2 adults & a 16 year old & we get:
King prawn schzuen OR chicken satay
Crispy chilli chicken
1/4 crispy aromatic duck with pancakes
Fried rice × 2
Fried noodles × 1
Chips (for teen)
Curry sauce
Prawn crackers

We all have dinner & usually a portion which dh or teen eat for lunch next day

Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic · 12/06/2022 21:32

I would never spend that much on a takeaway unless it's for a special occasion. However, if you can afford it and the food was all eaten not wasted then I think it's reasonable to spend as much as you want on a takeaway.

Chickadeeandchic · 12/06/2022 21:32

Wow you really like prawns! That looks like 6 mains plus sides, for 4 people? Usually when we order for a group we'll do one main and rice between 2, plus lots of starters and sides to share.

HPunlimited234 · 12/06/2022 21:33

Chinese is always double Indian.

We easy spend £70-80 on Chinese and £30-£40 on Indian for some reason.

Think it’s those tasty starters. The aubergine dish and all the prawns sound delish!

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 12/06/2022 21:33

Are you addicted to prawns?

Workyticket · 12/06/2022 21:33

That's loads!

We're in the North where everything's is cheaper. Me dh and ds would order

Special chow mein
Special curry
Rice
Crispy wontons
Sticky ribs

£20 odd quid

makeminealargeplease · 12/06/2022 21:33

Ours is usually £25 approx for two adults, main/rice, a few sundries and prawn crackers. No leftovers the next day. We've stopped getting them now though with the cost increasing to closer to £27/28 so £30 by the time we round up a tip for the delivery driver. I just can't justify the cost any more!

Sleepingsatellite1 · 12/06/2022 21:34

Paq · 12/06/2022 21:30

🤣🤣🤣🤣

TheRoadToRuin · 12/06/2022 21:34

I make that 10 x main dishes, 3 sides and 1 starter. So it's not expensive for what you ordered but a lot of food for 4 people even if all four of you had 2 meals off it.
DH and I would have 1 or 2 mains and 1 side between us, so around £15. If adult DSs were eating with us (they have big appetites) we'd have 4 mains and 3 sides, £30 ish.

Icecreamandapplepie · 12/06/2022 21:34

We spend £60 on an Indian but that's 2 dinners worth.
Bit more if you count fizzy and poppadoms from shop.

Would rather have once a month and go to a good quality place.

We have the odd mcdonalds as well but that is usually a letdown in comparison.

Wish we has a good Chinese locally...

TokyoSushi · 12/06/2022 21:34

That's a LOT of prawns! 🤣
