Are we fat bastards? How much do you spend on a takeaway?

I was interested to see on another thread that some people were horrified at a poster spending £40 on a takeaway and suggested she must be ordering an awful lot.
We had a Chinese last night for 4 people and it was £85- there was some left over for lunch today.
this was our order;
1x King Prawns Mushroom in Oyster Sauce 1x King Prawns Hong Kong Style Sweet & Sour Sauce 1x Aubergine Black Bean Sauce 1x King Prawns Satay 1x King Prawn Ginger & Spring Onion Sauce 1x Quarter Crispy Aromatic Duck 1x Mixed Appetisers for 2 1x Chicken & Prawns in Yellow Bean Sauce * 3x Egg Fried Rice (300g) 1x Special Chow Mein 1x King Prawns Fried Rice

so how much do you spend/order for 4 people and are we fat bastards?

We don’t have takeaways often, maybe 2/3 times a year, we spend around £28 for 4 for a Chinese takeaway.

MidwichCuckoo · 12/06/2022 23:21

We spend about £11 per person

Manova14 · 12/06/2022 23:24

I don't know if you're fat bastards but with that many prawns I think your cholesterol will be thru the roof!

ArtVandalay · 12/06/2022 23:24

I just looked at our most recent chinese takeaway email confirmation for 4 of us. It was £96.70.

Note - our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. This was far too much food and we had masses left over.

I hate chipping in on MN food posts and sounding like a typical competitive undereater.

I’m a greedy bitch. But that’s an insane amount of dishes for 4 people?!

We’re 4 and our order (which is only about once a year as we much prefer to eat out than get takeaway) would be like:

Prawn crackers
Spring rolls or prawn toast
Chicken Satay
Duck Pancakes (1/4)
Shredded chilli beef
egg fried rice
Singapore chow mein
chips

4 rice is mad for 4 people in my opinion unless your place is tiny portions?

PrinnyPree · 12/06/2022 23:25

For 4 adults we would get

Spring rolls
Quarter duck and pancakes OR salt and pepper chicken
Fried Chicken in Okay sauce
Beef and green pepper in Black bean
2x fried rice
1x char siu chow mein OR special fried rice with a side of curry sauce
(Complimentary prawn crackers)

Probably best part of £40 wouldn't have much left over.

Neverendingdust · 12/06/2022 23:27

I’m not a massive fan of sweaty lukewarm delivered food so we just spend on the £15 ‘M&S Dine In’ instead, their Indian range is great too and Sainsbury’s do good Chinese dishes.

Sadly the Deliveroo riders where we live use filthy backpacks to carry the order in which gives me the ick straightaway.

Mulhollandmagoo · 12/06/2022 23:28

It was £25ish for two....but our most recent one was £32 and it was the exact same order as before so I assume they've put their prices up 😪 definitely noticed they've increased their delivery charge though, which I suppose is understandable. No leftovers though.

sunshine271 · 12/06/2022 23:30

My DP eats a ridiculous amount but we wouldn't spend more than £30 for both of us.. £85 is a lot for a takeaway imo but if you've got the money 🤷🏻‍♀️

saleorbouy · 12/06/2022 23:30

€29 for two adults, two kids.
Two main dishes,
One chow mein noodles.
Two fried rice.
Prawn crackers.
2 cans.

You sound to me like you eat alot!

123ROLO · 12/06/2022 23:31

Our curry for 2 of us normally comes to £46

It includes

Chicken chaat
Saag paneer
Mixed tandoori
2 x curry
1 x mushroom rice
2 x naan

It does us for dinner two nights.

My boyfriend is underweight and I'm a bit more podgy than I'd like to be but not quite a fat bustard.

Didn't someone on that thread also say a fish and chips portion feeds a fam of 4 or something?

BottlingBurpsForGrandma · 12/06/2022 23:33

I think your order is pretty huge and expensive. This was our most recent order for 5 adults and 4 (primary aged) kids. Not many leftovers but enough for DH to have a good sized lunch next day.

Sleepingsatellite1 · 12/06/2022 21:37

There’s estimates ranging from 6 mains to 10 on this thread. We rarely get a takeaway, maybe once every 6 months or more so we get carried away when we do but we don’t chuck things in the bin so it’s fine imo

Same. We tend to spend £80-90 on Chinese for the 5 of us, but it will do a whole meal again the next day. Also, South East and rural so not much choice and expensive. Prices went up again recently, I do resent paying nearly £3 for a portion of rice!
Takeaway isn't much cheaper than a pub meal, once you've added a side to the main course so the only saving really is not buying drinks (and being able to eat in my pyjamas). We only tend to get takeaway for special occasions as it costs nearly as much as a week's groceries.

Colouringaddict · 12/06/2022 23:35

We have a Chinese once a week. We both have a rice or noodles dish and a main, we get free prawn crackers and it comes to about £24 including delivery and we live in London

bridgetreilly · 12/06/2022 23:35

That is about twice what I would order for four people, and I would expect to have leftovers for at least two people the next day. So, yeah?

Fifi0102 · 12/06/2022 23:36

Does anyone throw the left overs away ? Me and my friend ordered £50 worth of Chinese takeaway and she was going to chuck the leftovers as she hates left overs 😩 . I said no potted it up and took it home can't believe someone would waste that amount of food. I'm definitely a fat tight bastard 🤣

DoloresMores · 12/06/2022 23:38

That’s almost three times as much as we order for the same number of people.

2 appetisers
3 mains
2 rice

MysteryCallWTF · 12/06/2022 23:40

DH and I order -

Tofu Singapore style curry or other tofu main (one to share)
Egg fried rice
Large portion of Singapore vermicelli (absolutely tonnes of this, I have it for lunch next day too)
Spring rolls

Comes to about £15.

Yodaisawally · 12/06/2022 23:41

Well you spent all your money on king prawns!

It's 7-8 quid a main here, 10 for king prawns. We usually get 3x mains, chicken balls, special fried rice and special chow mein for 2 adults and 2 tweens. Add in duck that's another 15 quid. Around £60.

Enough for lunch the next day for at least one of us. Not cheap but at the moment fish and chips is almost £50 for 4, and curry on par too. The local pho place is £11 ppn

MummyInTheNecropolis · 12/06/2022 23:42

Chinese is always more expensive than other takeaways I find, I usually spend £35 for 2 of us (rare treat). For that we get:

quarter duck and pancakes
spring rolls
satay chicken
pork dumplings
sweet and sour chicken
egg fried rice

When we get Indian it’s usually £20-25, chip shop delivery is more like £15.

Nocutenamesleft · 12/06/2022 23:44

We only get take away about twice a year. If that sometimes. This year I think it’s been once! 4 people and it’s usually around £35

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 12/06/2022 23:44

5 of us £30
2 mains
2 Rice
2 chips
2 sides
2 desserts

Bloody hell. THAT'S an expensive Chinese takeaway. Ours is probably a third less than that!

PurpleButterflyWings · 12/06/2022 23:47

Re your post at 23.24 @ArtVandalay ^

BlueLoving · 12/06/2022 23:48

I spend £20-25 on just myself at either the chinese or indian, if I go with DD too then I easily spend £30-35
