Are we fat bastards? How much do you spend on a takeaway?

I was interested to see on another thread that some people were horrified at a poster spending £40 on a takeaway and suggested she must be ordering an awful lot.
We had a Chinese last night for 4 people and it was £85- there was some left over for lunch today.
this was our order;
1x King Prawns Mushroom in Oyster Sauce 1x King Prawns Hong Kong Style Sweet & Sour Sauce 1x Aubergine Black Bean Sauce 1x King Prawns Satay 1x King Prawn Ginger & Spring Onion Sauce 1x Quarter Crispy Aromatic Duck 1x Mixed Appetisers for 2 1x Chicken & Prawns in Yellow Bean Sauce * 3x Egg Fried Rice (300g) 1x Special Chow Mein 1x King Prawns Fried Rice

so how much do you spend/order for 4 people and are we fat bastards?

That's a lot of food for 4.

Dh and I usually have a main, side, rice and naan between us from Indian coming in at approx £18.

Chinese we usually have noodle dish, sauce dish, rice dish, side and prawn crackers for about £24.

Workyticket · 12/06/2022 21:33

That's loads!

We're in the North where everything's is cheaper. Me dh and ds would order

Special chow mein
Special curry
Rice
Crispy wontons
Sticky ribs

£20 odd quid

Wow! Main dishes re about £9 each where we are!

Notcoolright · 12/06/2022 21:35

That is an incredible amount of food for 4 adults. We order one main each. They are about £7 and all come with a portion of rice or chips so it would cost roughly £28 for 4. We aren't depriving ourselves and would still have left overs.

Marlaah · 12/06/2022 21:35

Last takeaway we had was from a Turkish place and it cost £25 for two. 1x lamb shish 1x chicken shish and both included salads, dips, bread, chips. Lots leftover. We’re light weights tho.

ClinkeyMonkey · 12/06/2022 21:35

That sounds like a lot to me! I don't want to do the whole Mumsnet competitive undereating thing, but DP and I order one dish between us, like King Prawn Szechuan or Vegetable Curry with a portion of fried rice and a portion on boiled rice. Sometimes we order a bag prawn crackers, although our local usually throws a few in. Comes to about £12 or £13 plus delivery and tip. To be fair, the portions here are enormous.

Costacoffeeplease · 12/06/2022 21:35

I’m not in the U.K. but we had a Chinese take away last week for 4 adults, it cost 50€

BritWifeInUSA · 12/06/2022 21:35

I hadn’t had a takeaway in years as there is nothing within 30 miles of us. However on holiday recently we did get a Chinese takeaway for the novelty and we spent a fortune because I wanted everything 😀. I think it was around 40 quid for 2 of us. Enough for the next day also and loved every unhealthy mouthful of it. I was like a child on Christmas morning in the takeaway place.

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 12/06/2022 21:36

In my opinion, you ordered a LOT of food for 4 people! We would normally have one main per person and assorted starters.

I would point out though, that the cost is very area dependent as that order would be upwards of £100 round here with that many prawn dishes!

Sleepingsatellite1 · 12/06/2022 21:37

There’s estimates ranging from 6 mains to 10 on this thread. We rarely get a takeaway, maybe once every 6 months or more so we get carried away when we do but we don’t chuck things in the bin so it’s fine imo

BigMamaFratelli · 12/06/2022 21:37

Really? We spend around 40 quid for 6 (midlands)
Although dd2 only eats rice, chips, noodles and the free prawn crackers.

TheRoadToRuin · 12/06/2022 21:37

In the 10 main dishes was counting crispy duck as a main because that's what I always order, plus special chow mein and prawn fried rice as mains because they are usually listed as mains on a menu.

Fleur405 · 12/06/2022 21:37

6 mains plus the duck plus (lots of) rice plus fired rice AND chow mien and starters? Yeah that’s at least 50% more than you need for 4 people!

Yes! 🙌

clary · 12/06/2022 21:38

I think that's a lot of food to order for four. We would spend about £30-£35 on four main dishes, large rice and perhaps spring rolls, for four people. Chinese is pretty cheap compared to, say, Wagamamas.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 12/06/2022 21:39

2 adults and a child here we would usually order 2 rice dishes (or one and a noodle dish) 2 mains and prawn crackers and that would leave some leftovers of rice and half a main for someone to have for lunch the next day.

Your order does seem a bit big.

mistermagpie · 12/06/2022 21:40

That's a lot of food!

DH and I pretty much spend £25 on a takeaway. It was my birthday last week and we got sushi which is a bit pricier but it still wasn't more than £30. We usually have leftovers too.

Northernsoullover · 12/06/2022 21:40

We spend around 25 for 3 of us. I had to cut back as Chinese food is so tempting that we often fancied two or three mains. It would be wasted unfortunately as eyes were bigger than belly!

Octomore · 12/06/2022 21:41

That seems an insane amount for 4 people - 8 main courses!? We typically only get 1 main course per person, so it works out significantly cheaper. I have a healthy appetite but no way could I eat what you've described.

Starters:
1x Mixed Appetisers for 2

Mains:
1x King Prawns Mushroom in Oyster Sauce
1x King Prawns Hong Kong Style Sweet & Sour Sauce
1x Aubergine Black Bean Sauce
1x King Prawns Satay
1x King Prawn Ginger & Spring Onion Sauce
1x Quarter Crispy Aromatic Duck

1x Chicken & Prawns in Yellow Bean Sauce
1x Special Chow Mein

Sides:
3x Egg Fried Rice (300g)
1x King Prawns Fried Rice

SortingItOut · 12/06/2022 21:42

I spend about £85 for 4 people on a Chinese takeout.

Everyone has at least 2 main courses, 1 rice each plus chips.

Would do 2 plates each the night its brought and lunch for everyone as well.

Definitely worth it and Its not being fat bastards.

Octomore · 12/06/2022 21:42

It would be unusual for us to spend more than £25 on a takeaway for the two of us.

SirChenjins · 12/06/2022 21:42

Jeez - yeah, that’s a lot of food for 4.

FirewomanSam · 12/06/2022 21:42

That other thread made me feel like I was going mad. People being shocked at £30-£40 on a four person takeaway when my husband and I can easily spend £50 or £60 between the two of us (or even more when it was a special occasion in lockdown and we ordered from a very nice steak place).

I also love King Prawn dishes so that pushes the price up and I always like to have lots of choice so we definitely order more than we need. We need to stop doing that though because as I get older I find that I can no longer face takeaway leftovers the next day, which makes me sad because leftover curry for breakfast was a highlight of my student days!

BeetyAxe · 12/06/2022 21:43

Yeh I’m a fat bastard and can eat like nobody’s business but that’s an insane amount of food!

Hottubby · 12/06/2022 21:44

Ha ha! Yes we do love a prawn 😂

Wow that is quite alot. We spend around £30/£35 for 3 and that can also stretch to the toddler if he's having some or usually some left for the next day with that. It is quite cheap where we are though compared to down south my eyes watered when we got a takeout near London last year when staying with family
