Are we fat bastards? How much do you spend on a takeaway?

I was interested to see on another thread that some people were horrified at a poster spending £40 on a takeaway and suggested she must be ordering an awful lot.
We had a Chinese last night for 4 people and it was £85- there was some left over for lunch today.
this was our order;
1x King Prawns Mushroom in Oyster Sauce 1x King Prawns Hong Kong Style Sweet & Sour Sauce 1x Aubergine Black Bean Sauce 1x King Prawns Satay 1x King Prawn Ginger & Spring Onion Sauce 1x Quarter Crispy Aromatic Duck 1x Mixed Appetisers for 2 1x Chicken & Prawns in Yellow Bean Sauce * 3x Egg Fried Rice (300g) 1x Special Chow Mein 1x King Prawns Fried Rice

so how much do you spend/order for 4 people and are we fat bastards?

We usually only order for the 2 of us so we get 2 mains and a rice to share. Costs about 13quid

HerRoyalNotness · 12/06/2022 23:53

You must love prawns! It seems a lot of dishes, but I’d it does you two meals that’s good.

our take out is normally in that price range for 4/5 people and we’ll have leftovers for 2/3 the next day.

MrsClatterbuck · 12/06/2022 23:54

We had Chinese for 2 on Saturday night. 1 X King prawn satay and 1X Special curry
With fried rice which is 30p extra. Total 14.30. I felt full after 1/2 mine and will have it tomorrow. You can have a larger main for £2 extra and a larger rice for a £1.
Works well for us. Occasionally we will have ribs or spring rolls as well

catfunk · 12/06/2022 23:54

That's a crazy Amount of food for 4 people

ilovelurchers · 12/06/2022 23:58

This is a strangely compelling thread! 🤣

We can't afford takeaways really so don't have them much any more, but my mom got an Indian one for us all recently. It was about £60 (we do live in a cheap area).

We got:
5 mains
2 naan
2 rice
Chips
One vegetable side dish.

It fed:
4 adults and one 10 year old for dinner (one was dad who sadly has dementia and hardly eats)
My husband for breakfast as he couldn't join us so I took it back for him.
2 frozen work lunches for me
Believe my brother took some back for lunch the next day.
My dog got two meals out of it.

We do hate any kind of food waste! 🤣

Sarah3587 · 12/06/2022 23:59

I saw that thread and thought the same.
I drew the conclusion that they’re all northerners where it’s cheaper. Or that they’re simple eaters and just getting the cheapy carby options like cheesy chips or chips and noodles etc.
we like to go all out and get lamb and black bean or prawns and down south those things don’t come cheap!
kfc is our cheapest option. Party bucket for £25 but most expensive is an Indian and we can spend anything from £60-£80 for 5 of us (3 adults 2 kids)
also worth nothing I know a lot of adults eat better their kids, just giving them the dregs like chips and sauce or rice and sauce but our girls like king prawns and sushi and would stick their noses up at cheese and tomato pizza or chips.

MrsClatterbuck · 12/06/2022 23:59

I had boiled rice with mine

OppsUpsSide · 13/06/2022 00:00

We spend less than that for 7 with left overs BUT some are fussy little ones who only really eat sweet and sour chicken balls and cucumber in hoisin sauce, plus we live in the sticks, so tricky to get but possibly cheaper overall

Wow do you live up north that’s super cheap!

Hillary17 · 13/06/2022 00:01

Yeah that’s quite a lot but depends how hungry you are! We usually (between two of us) share an egg fried rice, 1/4 duck with pancakes, beef in black bean sauce & chicken balls. All to share and usually have leftover for lunch.

Moonchild18 · 13/06/2022 00:02

We spend around £35-£40 for 5 of us but this includes 1 teenager and 2 almost teenagers

Sarah3587 · 13/06/2022 00:03

Notcoolright · 12/06/2022 21:35

That is an incredible amount of food for 4 adults. We order one main each. They are about £7 and all come with a portion of rice or chips so it would cost roughly £28 for 4. We aren't depriving ourselves and would still have left overs.

Down south you only get a main for £7 the rice is about £3 for boiled for £5 for fried rice

whynotwhatknot · 13/06/2022 00:06

i wish i did live somewhere cheaper its alot of food but a good price for it

paintingcolors · 13/06/2022 00:08

For a curry round here, 2 mains, 1 rice and 1 naan bread plus a £2 delivery tip is about £40 so i think what you paid is reasonable.

MushyPeasPrincess · 13/06/2022 00:08

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 12/06/2022 22:16

I usually get chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, bag of chips, keema naan and 9 poppadoms.

Was waiting for that and you didn't let me down!

SleepingStandingUp · 13/06/2022 00:11

So 8 mains, 2 appetisers, 4 rice. Yes that's a lot for four people.

Chinese we'd order a main and a rice each, free prawn crackers. Occasionally a large spring roll each. Less than £20 for 2.

Indian I'd order a curry, rice, naan and a side of mushrooms. £15

Pizza we order a large each but leave a few slices each. £40 but it's always about 40% off so under £30

Blimeyherewegoagain · 13/06/2022 00:12

That’s a massive amount of food. We order 1 main and 1 rice per adult and I usually save some for my lunch the following day.

So on av. half a portion of main each per meal, prob a large tbsp rice, a few chips and a small spoonful of veg. I mean credit for stretching it out but I feel hungry just thinking about it

Bellarima · 13/06/2022 00:24

We had Chinese on Saturday

We had mixed appetisers for 4 - spring rolls, wontons, prawn toast, seaweed
1/4 duck with pancakes etc
Beef in black bean sauce
Sweet and sour pork
Crispy chicken
Salt and pepper squid
Garlic chicken
Large egg fried rice
Salt and pepper chips
Prawn crackers

And it was 33.75 so yours sounds extortionate

CharSiu · 13/06/2022 00:28

We had a take away a couple of weeks ago for 4 adults.

3 mains
1 large rice
1 noodle dish
1 mixed veg
£30.

There was enough left for a small lunch for 1 person the next day.

MsOllie · 13/06/2022 00:29

Posted on the other thread but this is a local one with prices
I'm on my own so usually get
Large Pizza - does lunch the next day
Chinese - main, rice, starter and seaweed but it does me lunch the next day too
Indian - main, naan, onion bhaji (not keen on rice)

Last chinese for 2 was £40 and we got
Prawn toast, seaweed, spring rolls
Shredded chicken, shredded beef
Egg fried rice

Are we fat bastards? How much do you spend on a takeaway?
MushyPeasPrincess · 13/06/2022 00:30

That does seem a massive amount of food! How on earth can you eat 2 mains each plus all the extras? That does seem fat bastard territory I'm afraid, and I'm no slim Jemima at all.

We are 2 adults and a hollow legged teen DS. We order

3 x main dish (one each I mean, not 3 each, you never know on this thread!)
1 x rice and 1 x noodles plain sides (shared between us)
Chips (just DS)
They give us free prawn crackers, big bag.

Usually £27-£30 including delivery dep on main choice. Not much leftovers but we are all full and happy afterwards.

MsOllie · 13/06/2022 00:30

Should add we didn't finish that chinese between us and I had the leftovers for lunch Grin

Where the hell do you live you can get that for so cheap - I'm moving there immediately ShockShockShock

Bellarima · 13/06/2022 00:41

South west -
The appetisers, duck, beef in black bean, sweet and sour, crispy chicken and rice are a set menu at £25

But if you spend over 30 ( and pay cash) you get an meal plus prawn crackers, plus an extra rice or chips so we spent £7 on the squid and got the garlic chicken, s and p chips and crackers free

Plus a 1.5 bottle of Pepsi

Plus 1.75 for delivery
