Are we fat bastards? How much do you spend on a takeaway?

I was interested to see on another thread that some people were horrified at a poster spending £40 on a takeaway and suggested she must be ordering an awful lot.
We had a Chinese last night for 4 people and it was £85- there was some left over for lunch today.
this was our order;
1x King Prawns Mushroom in Oyster Sauce 1x King Prawns Hong Kong Style Sweet & Sour Sauce 1x Aubergine Black Bean Sauce 1x King Prawns Satay 1x King Prawn Ginger & Spring Onion Sauce 1x Quarter Crispy Aromatic Duck 1x Mixed Appetisers for 2 1x Chicken & Prawns in Yellow Bean Sauce * 3x Egg Fried Rice (300g) 1x Special Chow Mein 1x King Prawns Fried Rice

so how much do you spend/order for 4 people and are we fat bastards?

I love takeaways, but we only have 2 mains and 2 sides for 2 people. This usually comes to about £20. Rarely we might order a set menu for two which will come to about £25 and will include an extra main and starter.
I am fantasising about sitting in front of the spread you just described.

looondonn · 12/06/2022 21:45

Wow don't like Chinese food thankfully

Got the nicest ever Indian takeaway Fri night

Enough food for two people 11.50 with a side too
It lasted us two meals x 2 people

SatinHeart · 12/06/2022 21:46

Depending which takeaway, we spend £30-40 for two of us. But there's normally leftovers enough for a second meal. And that includes delivery (we are right out in the sticks). A four person set meal would be about £55 and for our local takeways the set menu does tend to feed 4 just fine.

Sisisimone · 12/06/2022 21:47

So you had appetisers, crispy duck then 2 main courses each? Yes you are fat bastards then 🤣

PeppaPigIsBacon · 12/06/2022 21:50

I have to order over £30 at a time or my local won’t deliver - luckily there is a specific noodle dish I love from there that freezes brilliantly! About £7 for a main dish here.

I tend to order for one person:
1x chicken satay starter
1x shredded beef
1x plain boiled rice (only eat half)
3x beef noodles with black bean sauce (for the freezer)

Blueshimmer · 12/06/2022 21:50

Between two adults we’d get two or three starters/sides, a main and a rice to split and some free prawn crackers. Maybe a noodle dish to split too if we’re hungry. It comes to less than £30 and we’re full.

I think you’re ordering an awful lot of food.

xyzandabc · 12/06/2022 21:52

That looks like a huge amount for 4 people. I think I can see 8 main courses, 2 appetisers plus rice for 4.

That's more than double what we would order for 4 people. And we would have some leftover too.

StopDrivingIntoMyFence · 12/06/2022 21:57

We had a Chinese takeaway last week for 4 adults. Total price was £38.

Special fried rice
Sweet and sour chicken hong kong style
Chicken chow mein
Chinese roast pork with beansprouts
2 Fried rice
1 chips
1 Mixed vegetables

DrMadelineMaxwell · 12/06/2022 22:04

We had chinese for 3 last night.

1 sweet and sour crispy shredded chicken (with rice)
1 beef and mushrooms (with chips)
1 beef chow mein.
1 chicken and pork fried rice.

£29

All of us had leftovers from it for lunch today.

Our general order is a main each and one fried rice dish to share, so when DD1 is home from uni it's £36 and we order an extra main.

Threeboysandadog · 12/06/2022 22:04

We have takeaway very rarely (always Chinese) and for 4 adults and a teen order

Beef Chow Mein
Chicken Fried Rice
Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls & Chips
Beef Curry and Fried Rice
Deep Fried Shredded Beef with Chilli & chips

Comes to about £50

TheLadyDIdGood · 12/06/2022 22:04

We got 1 x prawn korma, 1 x chickpea curry, 1 x king prawn madras, poppadoms and dips x 3 pillau rice plus a salad and x 2 cokes for 2 adults & 2 kids = £45

We share mains and don't like to eat leftovers so just order enough for one meal.

WeAllHaveWings · 12/06/2022 22:10

Ours is £32 for 3 delivered. The portions from ours are huge.

3 mains (2 beef, 1 chicken)
3 fried rice
2 sides

Ragwort · 12/06/2022 22:14

We have huge appetites but couldn't eat that much!
We usually order 2-3 main courses and 2 sides between 3 of us (& have leftovers).

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 12/06/2022 22:16

I usually get chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, bag of chips, keema naan and 9 poppadoms.

Wow. That is lot for 4 people.

Last time we had a Chinese takeaway we had between the four of us:

1 Sweet and sour chicken Honk Kong style
Half a Peking duck with accompaniments
1 Prawn dish
1 satay chicken
2 x fried rice

Either ours were extra big portions or your portions were very small. We don't competitively undereat BTW. There was loads of food.

This thread is making me want a Chinese now.

Teenagehorrorbag · 12/06/2022 22:17

I think the cost is irrelevant - that just depends on the takeaway. The issue is the amount of food. Everyone will have different views on that, so this is a slightly weird thread....?? If you were happy and there was no waste (fully agree with finishing leftovers the next day) then enjoy!!

PollyEsther · 12/06/2022 22:19

We feel ridiculously extravagant if we hit £40... there are 6 of us 😂To be fair, I could spend a lot more but DH gets twitch about the expense.

We usually get 3 mains, a starter or two, chicken balls, chips, rice, noodles.

Darbs76 · 12/06/2022 22:28

It’s going to vary hugely where you live if you ask about price. When I visit my mum in north wales we spend £30, here in south london we pay double that for the same amount of food.

RustyShackleford3 · 12/06/2022 22:50

I think the amount of food you've ordered there is pretty normal. Prawns and duck are both expensive - if you'd ordered chicken and vegetarian based things it would be far cheaper. Maybe the people who think that's expensive are the sort who would order veggie or chicken stuff?

PurpleButterflyWings · 12/06/2022 22:56

Fuck a crispy duck @Hottubby where do you put all that?! Me and DH have

1 portion of soft noodles
half portion of chicken balls - 4 or 5
1 portion of egg fried rice
1 chicken curry
1 portion of chips
1 portion of prawn crackers
4 small spring rolls
1 small pot of sweet and sour sauce
1 small pot of curry sauce

Comes to around £23. Gives us 4 meals - 2 each obvs. Usually have it once a month - on a Friday, and eat half, and then have the other half Saturday.

A neighbour of ours has takeaways 3 or 4 times a WEEK. Maccies, pizza, Indian, and Chinese. 2 adults 2 kids - (12 and 5.) Sometimes delivery, sometimes they go fetch it. Sometimes, the man goes to get it, and has so much food that he takes a load in, has to come back to the car for the rest. I don't know where they put it all either, and I have no fucking CLUE how they afford it. Must spend £80-£90 a week on takeaways.

Babyroobs · 12/06/2022 22:56

It sounds a lot. We don't have chinese but for any other take-away we would order one main dish each then the sides, popadoms, nan etc if Indian. Our normal Indian take away for 2 comes to less than £20. It would consist of one prawn dish, one veg based main dish, 2 onion bhajis, poppadoms and a nan.

DarkCharlotte · 12/06/2022 22:58

Me and DP would order

1 rice
2 mains
1 or 2 side dishes to share

We don't usually finish everything so have something for lunch the next day or whatever.

Jalepenojello · 12/06/2022 22:58

I’ve never spent more than £40 on take away but we’re two adults and two under 10’s. If it started creeping above £40 I’d order less or get cheaper options. It’s nothing to do with being a fat bastard though

TheDepthsOfDespair · 12/06/2022 22:58

We have recently made our order smaller as we realised we were over-eating massively every time we had takeaway and also trying to cut down spending without completely denying ourselves.

on Friday we had Chinese and just a large chicken and pineapple rice and one main between us which was £12.40

we used to share a rice and 2 mains plus a side like sesame prawn toast or something and it would be about £20 ish
