Are we fat bastards? How much do you spend on a takeaway?

I was interested to see on another thread that some people were horrified at a poster spending £40 on a takeaway and suggested she must be ordering an awful lot.
We had a Chinese last night for 4 people and it was £85- there was some left over for lunch today.
this was our order;
1x King Prawns Mushroom in Oyster Sauce 1x King Prawns Hong Kong Style Sweet & Sour Sauce 1x Aubergine Black Bean Sauce 1x King Prawns Satay 1x King Prawn Ginger & Spring Onion Sauce 1x Quarter Crispy Aromatic Duck 1x Mixed Appetisers for 2 1x Chicken & Prawns in Yellow Bean Sauce * 3x Egg Fried Rice (300g) 1x Special Chow Mein 1x King Prawns Fried Rice

so how much do you spend/order for 4 people and are we fat bastards?

Tonight's take away from a local Chinese was £16.40 including delivery.

Crispy chilli beef with chips.
Portion of large spring rolls.
Another portion of chips.
Portion of curry sauce.
Free prawn crackers.

I've seen a lot of people mention crispy duck, you can buy a 1/2 crispy suck with pancakes and hoisin sauce from Asda for £6.99 and you just have to buy cucumber and spring onions to go with it. It's as good as the take away version and a fraction of the price.

I can’t believe this thread is still running, who would have thought it would spark so much debate. On reflection I can see we do have a slight prawn problem! We do lay out the food like a banquet and everyone has a bit of everything, with leftovers for lunch- although portions aren’t huge and definitely don’t come with rice like some people on here get with their orders. I’m going to try without the prawns next time 😂

Isn't this question more about the quantity of food, rather than the price as I would imagine the cost of a Chinese takeaway will vary considerably between areas? Im in Yorkshire and pay £6.50 for King Prawn in Oyster Sauce, or for £7.10 for Special Chow mein, king prawn fried rice is £6.80, and egg fried rice is 2.60 for example here. So, personally I would then assume one main dish per adult, and you would probably get away with less chips/rice than actually ordering a whole portion per person of those. Starters would be small and probably need a whole portion per person. Again starters are personal according to budget, hunger and occasion. We could collect for free, or pay £2.00 for delivery. How does that compare or change your costs I wonder? There are also "set meals" you outdoor order which might limit your choices and quantities, but for 4 people here this would be £50.80 for example.

I've just posted on the other thread. A Chinese for 4 adults & a child costs us around £65.

We would each choose 1 main & 1 side (along the lines of sweet & sour chicken and egg fried rice), then around 3 or 4 appetisers/extras to share. Maybe mini spring rolls, prawn toast, salt & pepper chips etc.

We wouldn't order more than 1 main dish per person though.

Prawn dishes and crispy duck are expensive dishes though.

Went to a shopping centre the other day and looked at 5 Guys for lunch....who the actual FUCK pays 10.95 for a bacon cheeseburger?! A friend said "but they're really nice" at that price they would have to fucking be! Adding it up it worked out at about £18 pp for a burger/chips/drink...... some people really do have more money than sense!

Dont get me wrong, I will pay that in a place that offers service but this billed as a fast food place.

We love 5 guys as an occassional treat. The chips portions are huge so one portion would serve about 3 people. (And I'm not a MN undereater, they actually are massive)
